PESIDENT’S REPORT What a busy year this has been! The Don Rowing Club is thriving and we all need to be a part of this exciting time. Our year got off to a good start with the arrival in May of Horacio Tendilla Rocha as our Head Coach. He jumped in both feet and began to instill some higher standards of deportment and competition in all the programs but especially with the Juniors. There were of course growing pains experienced by all of us but things are now moving ahead with plans for further development of all programs over the coming year. Horacio has a wealth of knowledge and unbridled enthusiasm to share with coaches and rowers alike. We are very fortunate to have him here at the DRC. I will let Horacio comment on the rowing successes and failures of the past season but would like to congratulate again Pari Baker and Yara Ensminger for their selection to the Junior National Team in 2015. Both girls continue to shine in the rowing world and hopefully will be with us through the upcoming season as leaders in the U 23 program. I would like to personally thank all those who helped to fund the girl’s trip to Rio. You were wonderful in helping to make their dream a reality! The Friends of the Dons delivered a successful Alumni event in July bringing back to the club many old friends. We hope to continue this type of event through the years to come. Thank you to Ernst Peters and the “Friends” for all their labors. Ernst was awarded his 35 year pin at the RCA Gala in January for his years of dedication to not only the DRC but to the rowing world. Our Open House, Learn to Row, Corporate Events, Try it Days, Summer Camps, and Winter Run brought many newcomers to the DRC in 2015. We could not do this without the great leaders we have among us. Gina Bin (LTR), Elene Brett Evans, Louise Soucy-Fraser, Wendy O’Neill, and Rebekah Price made many of these things happen. Thank you all! Please everyone get involved with your club. It is fun and very rewarding! The Tony Fooks Regatta, one of our major fundraisers was another successful event in spite of some last minute panic. Marko Saban led the charge to get the entries in and organized and the races done successfully. Brant Ottnad took on the onerous job of food for the masses and made it happen in short order. My concern is that we always leave this events’ organization to the last minute. Therefore, before you leave today I would like someone to step up and offer to be the Regatta Chair for 2016 and get it going now. This should not be a last minute throw together event. We were saddened in October by the sudden passing of our friend and mentor Fred Loek. Fred touched many of our lives over his years at the DRC and will never be forgotten. A bursary has been set up in his name to eventually assist with travel or training expenses for a Junior(s) going to the Junior National Team. This bursary will continue to receive donations in hopes of making it self-sustaining for many years to come. We are planning an annual Alumni row and BBQ in the summer months to keep his memory alive.

December was our gala Captains dinner and what a night it was! Deb Baillie and her committee did a fabulous job of helping us celebrate the year’s accomplishments, and to say farewell to Ed Kornachuk, our long time Junior coach. Through all the ups and downs of the past year the Board has labored diligently to keep things running smoothly. Much has been done with Policy Development and Standard Operating procedures that needed and still need to be documented. A new reporting structure for the coaching team has been developed and new coaches will soon be appearing. The focus of the Board will continue to be policy development and management with many viable committees to get the actual “hands on” jobs done. Tom and Steve cannot keep the house going alone! As this is your club and in an effort to maintain the building and keep our fees under control, everyone must help out with something. This season will see monthly blasts for project teams that will be task oriented. Please be sure to pick something that you can do and help out! Thank you to all the Board for their hours of service that have helped us make the DRC a vibrant and pleasant place to be. Tom and Steve for their untold hours with boats and the tank monster project, Kieta with the membership, Cori and Elene with the finances, Nancy with the minutes and Ian, Ania and Brian for keeping us on track. What a team! It is my hope that we can go forward into 2016 with energy and determination to continue to make the Don Rowing Club a leader in the rowing community. GO DONS! Respectfully submitted, Lynda Dundas President

TREASURER’S REPORT The Don Rowing Club remains in a healthy financial state in spite of extraordinary expenses incurred in relation to the complete refurbishment to the rowing tank. As detailed further in the House Committee report, the building’s infrastructure is ageing and the twenty year old tank refurbishment could not be put off any longer. The total expenditures relating to the refurbishment came in at $31,537. These expenses were not planned, nor budgeted for, and thus are being considered “extraordinary”. The tank refurbishment expenses fall outside of our regular operation budget. As such, without this rowing tank expenditure, the DRC finished the year very close to its budgeted yearend target. The Membership income was a little less than forecasted, due to having fewer than anticipated members join during the summer months – however, this also translated to savings in association fees. The lower income was also offset by being under budget on our Coaching Fees – the DRC still did not have a full coaching roster. At the end of the year (excluding the tank extraordinary expense) the DRC finished with a surplus of approximately $9,000, approximately $2,000 shy of its budgeted year-end taget. As mentioned during last year’s DRC AGM, the DRC was most fortunate and grateful to be included as a recipient in Henri Cohen’s will. We had expected approximately $27,000 to be forwarded to the DRC sometime last summer, and this amount would have covered a major portion of the tank’s refurbishment cost. Unfortunately, due to an unhappy relative of Henri’s, the will is being contested and therefore the proceeds that will be distributed may be diluted for all listed beneficiaries. We do, however, expect the situation to be resolved this year and our bottom line for our 2016 financial position will benefit. A complete set of Financial Statements for 2015, as well as the 2016 Budget, will be presented and reviewed in detail at the AGM to be held on March 19 th. Questions may be asked at the meeting and we will do our best to provide meaningful answers and descriptions of our thoughts and insight that will continue to keep the DRC in a good operating financial condition. Respectfully submitted, Cori Simms Treasurer

ROWING COMMITTEE REPORT The Club Captain responsibilities in 2015 were once again shared between Tom Lancaster and Steve Dmytrasz – a model we have had in place since 2014. Both Tom and Steve have full time jobs, so having a co-captain to share responsibilities has worked out well. We wish to stress that the Captain’s cannot be successful without the help and support of all members. We all must uphold our responsibilities as it relates to the day to day use and respect of the equipment and facilities.

COACHING 2015 saw the hiring of our new Head Coach – Horacio Tendilla Rocha, who joined us in late April. Horacio jumped right into his role, and took the lead with the Masters Women program, and the Junior program, with assistant coaches Ed Kornachuk and Lorne Thomas for the Junior program. Horacio made an immediate impact with the Junior program in his short time with the club, growing athlete numbers and reworking the programming including dynamic warm ups and program athlete point of contacts. Mostafa Tolba took coaching responsibilities for the Masers Men filling a coaching need we had not been able to fill for many years. Augusto Papini continued with the Senior and U23 group as last year. Lynda Dundas continued with the recreational group with help from Brant Ottnad and Walter Benko. The coaching volume was better managed this year compared to previous years since we had more coaches, resulting in a better coach to athlete ratio. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to all coaches for their engagement, dedication and teamwork in 2015. As everyone knows, we suffered a big loss to our coaching staff with the departure of Ed Kornachuk in November 2015. Ed was a valued coach and longtime member of the Don Rowing Club and he will be missed. We wish to acknowledge Ed’s dedicated service to the junior program for the past 15 years, and we wish him well in Winnipeg. Overall, the Junior program was the priority program for the club in 2015 and this will continue into the next season. Part of the Club’s strategic plan involves growth and development of a large base of junior athletes to progress to U23 and Senior athletes that want to return to DRC from year to year. The smallest program was the Senior/U23 group (which has been the case for the past few years), and the Rowing Committee would like to see growth in this program over the next 2 - 3 years.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT A 2012 Hammerhead Super Predator double was purchased in February of 2015, adding to our fleet of Tier 1 boats. Also purchased was 4 sets of sculls following the Head of the Charles. The sculls were used at the regatta and were sold at a discounted price. These oars will be allocated to Tier 1 boats. 6

Don Rowing Club of Mississauga 113 Lakeshore Rd. W., Suite 44 Mississauga, ON L5H 1E9

Overall, our fleet is in very good shape; however our first need is our fleet of singles. They are aging, and many of the Cucchietti’s have hulls that are deteriorating. Horacio spent some time in 2015 retro fitting some Cuccietti’s with Hudson riggers, extending the life spans of the boats. We had 2 major accidents in 2015 that required boats be taken to Hudson for repair: The Jeff Lay hit an extremely large, submerged tree, and the new lightweight double was damaged during trailering. The Captains are happy with how the boat tiering system is working – 2015 was the 2nd full year of this system. We would like to remind the membership this system is in place to preserve our boats and to align boat usage with their intended use and skill of crew (eg: a senior racing crew at Henley vs. a novice junior crew vs. recreational use). We want to thank the membership for taking ownership of cleaning boats/oar handles, reporting damage promptly and respecting the boat Tier rules. All coaches have the authority, and are expected to enforce these rules.

DOCKS Were installed on 07APR2015, and removed on 03NOV15. Providing 7 months of water access for membership.

Respectfully submitted, Steve Dmytrasz and Tom Lancaster Co-Captains

HEAD COACH REPORT Overview This past year was my first year as Head Coach at the Don Rowing Club, and it was a year of much learning. I learned how the facility operates, how the programs are managed, and how the members interact on a day to day basis. Over the course of the year I had the chance to meet and coach many members at the club, these members also got the chance to learn more about me and the way that I coach. I also learned in 2015 that there are many areas at the DRC that can be developed and improved – greater focus on technical proficiency, improved safety and boat care, and more cohesion between the programs at the club. All members have to be committed to these goals, and have the desire to become better rowers, athletes, and a better club. We have to start small with little changes, so that in a year’s time the sum of all these changes will be a big shift in club culture. The Don Rowing Cub is a club with a solid past and an incredible future. The most important thing that I learned in 2015 is that the Don Rowing Club can easily be one the leading clubs in Canada thanks to their unique location, solid facilities, and dedicated members. “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change “ - Charles Darwin (1835) Highlights from 2015 Below are some of the highlights that I noted from 2015 season:  Changes to Program protocols: - Established training principles:  Commitment  Punctuality  Discipline - Changed the program dynamic to make every practice count. - Created a foundation for athletes to row well - every day there was emphasis on strength, coordination and flexibility in order to perform and maintain proper rowing technique. - Practices start on time, with a full warm up (run, dynamic warm up, and core strength) with the objective to help prevent injuries and increase strength. - Fundamentals of DRC rowing technique:  Tall, strong posture.  Long strokes.  Strict sequence of the stroke (hands away and then body swing).  Junior Competitive Program - A development pathway was established for Junior rowers to transition from novice rowers to competitive rowers. This pathway helps Juniors achieve their maximal

8

Don Rowing Club of Mississauga 113 Lakeshore Rd. W., Suite 44 Mississauga, ON L5H 1E9

potential in a safe atmosphere, and helps avoid injuries and overdevelopment and/or burnout. The pathway is:  Rowers begin in “Youth Summer Rowing Camp” or a “Youth Learn-to-Row” session.  Rowers then transition into “Level 1 Junior Competitive” (4 training sessions/week, and attend local and provincial regattas).  Finally after rowing in Level 1 rowers are able to graduate into “Level 2 Junior Competitive” (6-8 training sessions/week, and attend local, provincial and national regattas). - A specific protocol and structured day-by-day lesson plans were developed for the Summer Youth Rowing Camp. This ensured that all attendees would receive identical instruction and learn in the correct sequence. - There was a high retention rate of youth that attended the Summer Youth Camp and then joined the Level 1 Junior Competitive program in the fall. - Main results from 2015:  Pari Baker and Yara Ensminger finished 2nd and 3rd in the Rowing Canada Junior Selection Trials, and went on to represent Canada in the 2015 Junior World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They raced in the JW 4x and finished 6 th.  Yara Ensminger also won the Canadian National Rowing Championships in the Junior 1X in October, 2015.  A competitive group of Juniors raced at Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and made 4 finals. Master Women Program - Successfully implemented new Program protocols (listed above). - Implemented a dynamic warm up routine and develop core and improve flexibility. Also as a result, the program was injury free and the group was able to row with better technique (good and strong posture and body swing together). - Developed boat skills and confidence with more rows on the lake. These lake rows translated to better performances at regattas that had bad weather and/or choppy water. - Main results from 2015:  Amber Oke finished 5th in the Master W 40+ 1X at Head of the Charles  The Grand Master W8+ finished 6th at the Head of the Charles (Rita Toporowski, Laura Middleton, Cori Simms, Cynthia Drewry, Michele Dunlop, Deb Baillie, Gina Bin and JP). Master Men Program - This program was led by Mostafa Tolba – he created a great atmosphere of camaraderie and competition. This group worked very hard during the year, and had solid results at Masters RowOntario Championships, Canadian Henley and Head of the Charles. U23/Senior Competitive Program - This program was led by Augusto Papini – and again had a solid year of hard work and training. During the summer of 2015 the U23/Senior doubled in size with many

9

university students joining the program. The program had good performance at Head of the Charles having boats finish in the top 5. Recreational Program - This program was led by Lynda Dundas – she successfully integrated the dynamic warmup into the warm up routine, and also had many members of the group participating in the erg monitoring tests and some time trials. - They also focused on rowing with DRC technique (tall posture, hands away first and then body swing), and had great technical improvements over the course of the season.

Goals for 2016 After a successful 2015, these are the areas that I see that we can make improvements:  Safety The 2016 season has to have more emphasis on boat safety. All members need to be diligent in following procedures, and we need to constantly for improve and search for new ways to improve our safety policies. For example, we have to improve the visibility of boats on the water and insist that all boats have correct lighting (red on the stern, white on the bow, and one personal light on each rower). Also, we need to continue to implement the use the radios during practices and during time trials for improved safety and communication.  Equipment Reinforce the correct use of the equipment and implement boat tearing. Constant reminder to all members to take care of the equipment (shells, oars, ergs, coach boats, etc.). Club equipment is “our” equipment and is for the benefit of all. We all need to further develop a culture of care for the equipment at the club. All coaches and members need to work closely with the Rowing Committee to indicate when repairs are necessary.  Cohesion Another priority is to improve the cohesion between programs. We have a long way to go in this matter, but we have taken very solid steps in 2015 with the mixed rows in April and October. All members have to be more active in club activities. We are going to start with a Spring DRC 2k Ergatta in April, and then continue with Time Trials on Saturdays as we get back on the water.  Program Protocols The Junior, Master Women and Recreational programs made good strides in implementing these protocols, but in 2016 we want all programs to be following the same system. And all rowers in all programs should be rowing with a unified technical style.  Clinics and Lectures Hold more clinics and lectures on different subjects, topics including: technique, biomechanics, nutrition, Injury prevention, stretching, and core stability. These events will improve the level of coaching and rowing. We are going to start with Coaching and Rigging clinics.  Communication Improve communication between coaches in order to send a clear and solid message for all members. Also improve the communication between rowers and coaches to improve technical feedback, and to better understand challenges and opportunities in each program.

Conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Don Rowing Club over the course of this rowing year. I met great athletes that want to improve every day; they work very hard and they follow the guidance of their coaches. The Don Rowing Club has the equipment, facilities and policies to have an even more successful year ahead. If we focus and are committed to the goals listed above, and we work on our identity, cohesion and are committed to excellence day in and day out – I truly believe that the Don Rowing Club will be the leading club in Ontario. This 2016/17 year will be a great experience for all. Respectfully submitted, Horacio Tendilla Rocha Head Coach

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT Thank you to all of the members of the Don Rowing Club for another great membership year. The numbers presented today includes Recreational, Competitive, Masters, Junior, and Coxswain members. In the 2015 membership year, which runs from April 2015 to March 2016, we saw a slight decrease in overall membership; due mostly to lower numbers the Competitive and Summer Competitive groups. We had another successful LTR program this year with 8 adult sessions offered over the season for a total of 57 participants. As for Junior Learn to Row, we had 65 participants over 5 sessions. Many thanks to all the volunteers, the LTR sessions would not be possible without your help. The Membership Committee looks forward to another successful year in 2016 and welcomes suggestions, feedback, as well as volunteers!

HOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT 2015 was another busy year for House Committee activities. The building is aging, and repair work is an ongoing reality for the club. The Committee would like to thank the following individuals for their help and volunteerism during 2015: Jim Mercer, Tibor Kovacs, Richard Dundas, Erik Sorensen, Masters Men for the Tank clean up, Lynda Dundas Please see below chronological summary of House Committee activities in 2015:  

         

Annual fire inspection conducted by Onyx Fire Services. No deficiencies noted City of Mississauga completed a few projects at the club in 2015: o fire exit enhancement on main floor- stairs exiting door installed and concrete pad installed o Painting of steel beam in the tank and steel window sills in the tank o Painting of interior railings main floor down to boat bays o Painting of exterior railings on roof top o Repair of interior brick wall around women’s change room door Erg room repainted Tank repairs and refinishing Duct cleaning and minor repair work on heating unit that services the tank Tank mechanics replaced/upgraded: brominator, energy efficient pump and tubing. Club clean up after tank work was completed Tank cleaned by Masters men 2 Mirrors replaced in tank New garbage collection containers received from the city of Mississauga: Large containers, one for recycling, and another for all other garbage. Main door wheelchair access device repaired Heating unit in repair bay fixed (gas valve)

I’d like to specifically detail the work in the Tank since it clearly had a large impact at the club; both from a financial perspective as well as interruption of our normal activities. The work in the tank in 2015 was an exceptional expense, and needed to be completed since the tank was 19 years old at the time with no previous similar work performed. When the tank was drained of water in preparation for the City to paint the metal beam, several individuals approached the House Committee with the suggestion that we take the opportunity to repaint the tank. Knowing that there was not any major maintenance work on the tank since it was built; we felt this was a reasonable request to explore. Steve Dmytrasz, Tom Lancaster and Richard Dundas took on the task of identifying potential contractors, and requesting quotes. 3 separate contractors came to the club to visually inspect the tank, and provide their feedback on the work that would be 14

Don Rowing Club of Mississauga 113 Lakeshore Rd. W., Suite 44 Mississauga, ON L5H 1E9

involved. All contractors agreed that the current coating in the tank had to be removed due to its poor condition (degrading, flaking off the concrete). We could not simply paint over it. All contractors also agreed that the old coating would best be removed by sand blasting, as well as the new coating being epoxy paint. Once we received all quotes, Tom Lancaster and Steve Dmytrasz selected a contractor based on overall cost, experience of the contractor, and how well our communication with the contractor had went during the quotation process. This was then presented to the Board for review and approval. Once the contractor was agreed to, the work began on October 22nd. The first issue the project experienced was the removal of the old coating was much more difficult than originally expected. Sand blasting did not work since the old coating was rubberized, and the blasting medium was therefore not effective. The contractor had to grind the old coating away with hand grinders. This removal process was extremely time consuming, and it caused the large amount of dust at the club. Efforts were put in place to control the spread of the dust such as sealing the tank door, 2 sets of plastic sheeting were hung, and exhaust fans leading out the side door of the tank were used. During the removal process, a minor problem was encountered where a large (approximately 8 feet long) piece of concrete fell away from the upper floor, exposing the iron rebar. We had to call in a concrete specialist to assess the problem and repair it. Once the old coating was fully removed and the rebar was repaired, the tank then had to be cleaned of dust so the new coating would properly adhere. Painting began on November 6th, which did go to plan, however the fumes from the paint were quite bad, and the House Committee sent a recommendation to the membership to stay away if anyone was sensitive to strong odors or had respiratory concerns. Painting was completed on November 20th, and we began to refill the tank on December 2 nd. Since epoxy paint was used, it required at least a week to cure before it could come in contact with water. At this point, the second issue occurred to the project – when only 20% full, it was discovered that the walls of the tank were leaking. The tank was quickly drained, and 2 problems were discovered which were causing the leaks. Both were due to the original construction of the tank. The first was that the concrete walls were extremely porous. There were thousands of small holes on the surface of the walls that the water clearly was seeping through. This was not anticipated to happen when the old coating was removed; we did not expect the holes to go entirely through the wall, allowing water to penetrate. The second issue was where the concrete wall meets the floor. We discovered this was a “cold joint” meaning, when it was built, the floor was poured, allowed to harden, then the wall poured on top. When done this way, the wall and floor are not actually joined; the wall simply sits on top of the floor, thus there are very small gaps through which water could pass. Upon further consultation with our contractor, a solution was found, which was to coat the surface of the tank walls, as well as sealing the floor/wall joint with an epoxy based filler. This added more time and money to the project. The filling was completed quickly – and on December 8th Tom Lancaster and Steve Dmytrasz carefully inspected the tank to ensure our satisfaction, and confidence that all problem areas were filled, and no leakage would occur again. Finally, the tank was re-filled on December 17th, with no leaks. It was open for use immediately afterwards.

Don Rowing Club of Mississauga 113 Lakeshore Rd. W., Suite 44 Mississauga, ON L5H 1E9

The entire project timeline was approximately 8 weeks – 3 weeks longer than originally anticipated. The House Committee is pleased at the overall outcome, and stress that this is exceptional work. If this work had not been performed in 2015, it would need to be performed very soon. The House Committee acknowledges the disturbances this project caused at the club and we thank the membership for their patience and support during the project. We now have a fully functional and repaired tank that should not require a similar maintenance project for another 20 years Respectfully submitted, Steve Dmytrasz and Tom Lancaster Co-Captains
