` TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

WELCOME Thank you for your interest in rowing with the Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club Inc. We are an enthusiastic, welcoming and supportive team of students, coaches, staff and parents. We look forward to having you joining us this season.

What is Rowing? Rowing is an exciting, competitive sport which continues to grow in popularity. Within secondary schools, it is predominantly a crew (team) orientated sport and as such requires commitment in both time and effort from both rowers and their parents. As both a Club and a School Club, we are able to attend many local and national events supporting crew and individual races. Parents are encouraged to attend in support of our rowers, for without this support, we cannot exist. We will have a regatta tent at most events.

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Sponsorship & Fundraising Each year the fundraising efforts of the club are put towards refurbishment and replacement of rowing equipment. Without the efforts of the whole club we would be unable to provide new equipment. Club fees are set at a level that meets only the operating costs of the club, hence fundraising is essential. Each season every rower will be asked to help with fundraising as follows: We are involved in hosting two regattas in Auckland held at Lake Pupuke. The first is the Waitemata/TGS Regatta which we run jointly with Waitemata Rowing Club. The second is the Head of Harbour Regatta, which TGSRC host on behalf of ASB College Sport. This is the largest regatta held in Auckland and our primary fundraiser for the season. For each of these regattas, every rower is asked to find at least one race sponsor. Additional information and assistance will be provided nearer the regatta time. In addition to the regatta sponsorships, we run an annual raffle. Rowers will be allocated books of tickets to sell. We look forward to your support. TGSRC Equipment Takapuna Grammar School Rowing has one of the most up to date fleet of training and racing equipment of any school in New Zealand, supported by a regular replacement and maintenance program. This equipment is made of very fine carbon fibre and can easily break therefore at TGSRC we encourage a strong culture of Respect for all our equipment and also each other. Rowers are fully instructed on how to handle all equipment and in who to listen to when exiting or entering the water. This becomes a core part of the discipline that is required in the sport of rowing.

7

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Rowing Uniform We have a registered compulsory rowing uniform which must be worn at each regatta and event when representing TGSRC. Rowers are not permitted on the water without it. It is recommended your racing singlet be kept for these events and alternative items worn for training. All rowers require a gear bag which we offer one as an option below.

In addition we recommend you have thermal wear and track pants – you need to be prepared for all weather conditions – yes it can get cold, wet and foggy in summer! ALL ROWERS MUST HAVE FULL ROWING UNIFORM FOR ALL ROWING EVENTS Compulsory Kit

Behaviour A high standard of behaviour and respect is extremely important at all times, not only for team morale but also to ensure quality input from coaches and parents is beneficial. Whether competing in a crew or individual events, you are part of the Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club as a whole. When not racing, your presence will be required at regattas, supporting your fellow crews at the water edge / finish line, prize giving, fundraising events and associated social occasions. Remember you will be wearing Club uniform / school colours and representing Takapuna Grammar School. Therefore your behaviour reflects on the school, your crew, coaches and parents. There will be a Code of Conduct to be read and signed at registration night.

Club Captains Club Captains will be selected by way of voting once registrations are complete. The Captains are; one female and one male from the U18 senior rowers. Voting will be co-ordinated by the Director of Rowing and Teacher in Charge. The role of the Club Captains includes supporting the coaches, starting the chants to encourage racing crews, support and help all rowers whilst being good role models themselves.

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

ROWER CODE OF CONDUCT TGS Rowing club members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the purpose of the School and Club, which is to help them to be the best rowers they can be. TGS Rowing exists to promote health, athletics and a competitive environment, instilling an appreciation for teamwork, discipline, fitness and self-worth. The TGS Rowing committee endorses the following Code of Conduct for its members. ATTENDANCE It is my responsibility to … A. B.

Learn and know my training and regatta race days and times. Arrive and be fully prepared for training at least 5 minutes prior to the given time. C. Learn and know regatta travel times and convey them to my parents/guardian. D. Inform the appropriate coaching staff in advance of missing training. E. Understand that the failure to consistently attend training affects not only my performance but also that of the entire crew. It may also affect my selection in a particular boat. BEHAVIOUR I understand … A. B. C. D. E.

F. G.

The coach-coxswain-rower hierarchy while at TGS Rowing training and races. My physical appearance and my attitude is representative of me and my crew. I will strive to represent myself and TGS Rowing in a favourable manner. The possession, use or tolerance of illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco is not consistent with conditioning my body or team for competition and is strictly prohibited by TGS Rowing. Behaviour at training must be consistent with that of personal and team safety. This includes activities in the boats, on land, in parking lots, while travelling and for all team functions. That team managers and coaches are in authority and by being a member of TGS Rowing I agree to abide by team rules concerning times of restriction such as ‘lights out’, and other rules of personal conduct when away at regattas or training camps. That at all time I shall be respectful in my dealings with coaches, managers and parents. That media (includes movies, printed material and music) in my possession during all club functions should reflect well on the club and myself.

Rower Code of Conduct Cont’d EFFORT I understand that trainings are meant to prepare my mind and body for competition. Therefore, my effort at training will be at the same level as it is on a race day. I understand that in order to grow both physically and mentally I need to put in my best efforts at training and at regattas. I understand that team and crew selections are made by the coaching staff in the interests of the whole crew/squad and they may not always be consistent with my own personal interests. I understand that while objective measurements such as erg times and training attendance are available, the coaches’ professional observations of such things as athleticism, attitude and personal effort will be among their first considerations in selecting crews. I will give my best effort to the squad/crew regardless of the boat or crew I am placed in or the people I am rowing with. I understand that this is a team sport and that I am not more important than the team. EQUIPMENT I understand that All TGS Rowing equipment including skiffs, oars, cox-boxes, ergs, the Rowing Centre and weights are club property. I agree to treat all equipment with proper and due respect in an effort to not cause avoidable damage and wear. If I cause or notice any damage to any equipment, I will report that damage to my coach. TEAM RULES 1. Respect Equipment 2. Respect Others (Coaches, Parents, Peers) 3. Good Attendance 4. Good Attitude 5. Follow all TGS Rowing rules PROCESS FOR MISBEHAVIOUR Director of Rowing states a warning (where possible in consultation with squad coach). Or Or Or

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

In hosting Head of Harbour on behalf of ASB College Sport, TGSRC have achieved an extremely high standard for organising and running this event over the last few years. This has been achieved solely from invaluable volunteer efforts from parents / caregivers, siblings and friends supporting our rowers. Detailed information for this will be circulated closer to the time so please be prompt in replying to ensure you secure a preferred time slot and duty – this equals a substantial fundraising opportunity to purchase new equipment for our athletes which turns into – JOB DONE!  Training On-Water and Ergs / Core Fitness A monthly roster will be provided which details who will be training, where, when and what form of training (land based or water). This is emailed to all parents and rowers as well as put on Facebook. Please refer to Facebook for updates or last minute changes. Erg and core training sessions are held at school in the RPC and on-water sessions are run out of Bayswater, Waitemata and Mercer. Bayswater sessions are primarily for our U15 rowers in the mornings before school. It is the rowers/parents responsibility to ensure rowers are at school on time – the School has zero tolerance for using rowing as an excuse for being late. It is generally only possible to train at Bayswater in the mornings due to general water traffic and prevailing winds. Our senior crews train at Waitemata in the afternoons, leaving straight from school in our mini vans along with parental support driving their own vehicles when needed. There will be a transport roster compiled for this purpose. Training sessions in the weekends will be at either Waitemata or Mercer. Once again transport will be with our mini vans and parental support where needed. There will be a transport roster compiled for this purpose. Rowers can expect trainings to increase, both in the number and of intensity as the season progresses. The training schedule is set and provided monthly by the Director of Rowing. However this can be subject to change via email and / or Facebook.

13

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Spin Classes Spin classes are part of the training for our U16-U18 rowers for the first half of the season. Training Camps Training camps form an important part of our selection process where seat racing and testing takes place to select the crews for our major regattas which happen in the second part of the season – after Christmas. During camps we do a lot of kilometres on the water where individuals are assessed and given equal opportunities to be placed in the highest ranked boats. At the December camp, shadow crews are selected and then either finalized or altered at the January camp. It is not unusual for young athletes to force their way into higher ranked boats at the January camp, through dedication and determination. There will always be circumstances where athletes are unable to make one of the camps and therefore, will still be assessed based on their performances over the season. Ideally it is important in terms of selection that the camps are attended by all. Other Sports Along with your commitment to rowing, some priority is given to winter sports at the close of the respective season. However, the same applies at the end of the rowing season when summer sports begin. March is the business end for rowing, which you will have trained hard to achieve your peak performance at NISS or Maadi – both regattas held in March. Crew Selections The Director of Rowing is the decision maker, in consultation with other coaching staff. Crews will change throughout the season depending on rower’s participation and commitment, fitness and rower availability At any stage should you have questions to ask, please direct these through our Crew Managers who will be able to either answer or direct you to who best to help:

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Introducing our Coaching Crew and Teacher in Charge (TIC) MIKE HILL – Director of Rowing I have been involved in rowing since the age of six and have coached professionally in various countries around the world for 16 years. Prior to this I was a NZ police officer for 20 years. I am married to Torrill and have two adult children. My most memorable win was coaching my daughter to win the woman’s senior club eight at the NZ Champs on her 15th birthday.

TERRY TIDBURY - Coach I have been coaching at TGS since the 2004/2005 season mainly focussed on the U15 and U16 athletes. Initially I coached boys and then girls and for the last two seasons both boys and girls. My focus has always been on ensuring rowers enjoy the sport as well as being competitive particularly in their U16 season.

TOM MOORE - Coach I am an ex-Takapuna Grammar School student and rower. I rowed during the 2004-2008 seasons and competed in the u18 4x and u18 single scull crews and achieved top 10 in New Zealand placings in my u16, u17 and u18 seasons. I was also the club captain of TGSRC during the 2007-2008 season. I am a qualified Fitness Instructor and I'm currently in my final stages of completing a bachelor of Physical Education. I also have over 2 years of experience in the fitness industry as a fitness instructor at Just Workout and over 5 years of coaching experience, including coaching the U15's of last season. TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Maadi Selection Policy This policy is based upon the rowing club and school policy of providing equal opportunity for all athletes to be selected at their appropriate levels, relevant to their age and ability. Criteria All athletes have equal opportunity to show their ability prior to final selection for the two major regattas North Island secondary school and Maadi Cup. Selection will be based on the following criteria and testing throughout the season. -

2km 5km ergometer 30% Boat movement 50% Compatibility 20%

Coach Consultation Crew selections will be made by the Director of Rowing in consultation with the squad coaches for each age group based on the above criteria. The Director of Rowing will have the final say on all selections. Maadi cup selections will be based on the crews expected to be in the top 11 at Maadi Cup, that is either an A final or 1,2,3, in the B Finals. Appeal against non-selection Where any athlete believes they have not had an equal opportunity to be selected for Maadi cup crews, they may if they wish, ask for a review of their non-selection immediately after the announcement of the crews for Maadi cup. Ask for a meeting with their coaches and the Director of Rowing to outline where they believe they have been disadvantaged in selections. The Director of Rowing and squad coach should resolve this immediately. Where it cannot be resolved a meeting between the athlete, Director or Rowing, squad coach and the Parent Liaison will take place to resolve the matter immediately with a written decision presented to the athlete and parents within 24 hrs of the original selection announcement being made. This written decision will be final. 16

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Regatta Format We race in selected crews competing in various categories, ie eights, quads, doubles and singles events. Novice Parents Regatta Survival Guide

Who do we race?

As we are a club in our own right, this entitles us to enter regattas for both school and club events. We complete against most of the larger schools in the Auckland area including Kings, Auckland Grammar, Westlake (Boys/Girls), Diocesan and also Club crews, ie West End, North Shore and Auckland Rowing Clubs. As a parent of a novice rower, please don’t be alarmed when you see your son or daughter in events with adult rowers, this is usually the case in novice events and all competitors will be first year rowers. 17

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Who does what? Pre-race crew meetings, getting boats on and off the water, rigging and checking correct racing gear is handled by the Director of Rowing, coaches and the athletes themselves. We do not expect parents or coaches to be running around after athletes who did not bring the right gear or turn up at the right time – the majority of what happens at the regatta is handled by the rowers themselves. A parents main job at a regatta (should you want to call it a job) is to cheer on crews, enjoy yourself and get to know other parents. AT NO TIME ARE PARENTS ALLOWED IN THE BOAT PARK

This area is for the coaches and rowers to be focused and ready for their races. Parents can catch up with their rower when they return to the regatta tent.

At what times do we race? The coaches will make this known to rowers at training, with communications being sent out once the official programme is known. In some cases this may not be available until the evening before the regatta.

What should I bring? Be prepared for all seasons in one day! Picnic rug, camp chairs and packed lunch. Binoculars, plenty of sunscreen, hat and a warm jacket are recommended. There will be kiosks available for you to purchase from at most regattas.

Arrival and Departure Times will be advised by ‘Regatta Information’ emails being sent out. All rowers will be expected at the meeting point at the time indicated. No rower may leave the regatta site at any time or before the end of boat loading, without the permission of the Director of Rowing and/or Teacher in Charge.

Parking at Lake Pupuke Very early arrivals will get into close side streets. The Milford Business Association have arranged for extra parking at the Milford Primary School complimented with a Shuttle bus service passing by the Mall and Lake. There is NO parking in Sylvan Park Avenue or inside the Regatta site at all. Tow trucks will be called!

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Regatta Accommodation and Rowing Camp Karapiro River The Karapiro River regatta site is located 6 km south of Cambridge. Regatta parking is available at a small charge. Takapuna Grammar School Rowing Club has a marquee tent which parents, family and supporters can use as a base. It is a good idea to bring your own chair, binoculars, and be prepared for all weather. TGS Regatta Site Parent help is required on the day of arrival to help set up the tents etc, and at the completion of the regatta to dismantle and pack up everything onto the trailer/truck. Boat Park parents are not allowed in the boat park. This space is for the coaches and the rowers only to be focused and ready for their races. Parents can catch up with the child when they return to the club regatta site. Supervision Rowers will be supervised and under the responsibility of the Director of Rowing (DOR), Teacher in Charge (TIC) and coaches. Lost Property The DOR or TIC will be in charge of the Lost Property for the season. Transport Rowers will travel to and from the regattas at Lake Karapiro by bus, Club or school vans. Parents will be responsible for transporting their rowers to and from Training Camp at Epworth Camp in January. Rowers need to be at Epworth Camp by 9am and collected from Epworth Camp at 3pm, dates to be confirmed. Home Baking Each rower is to provide large batches of home baking. One batch for a regatta weekend away Two batches for KR1/training camp Two batches for the training camp in January Biscuits and slices are best as they keep longer, but all contributions will be gratefully received. We are asking for good old fashioned home baking, things like banana loaf and anything containing oats and dried fruit are great. As a guide, we recommend using recipes that use approximately 125g (4oz) of each butter and sugar. For transportation ice-cream containers are ideal, however if you want your container back please ensure it is named. The home baking is used as recovery foods, part of lunch or afternoon tea where appropriate, and distribution is monitored as part of the overall foods prepared. 19

TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ROWING CLUB

Accommodation - Rowers Rower accommodation is in single sex bunk rooms with some, or all, of their age group crew. The rooms are treated as bedrooms, where privacy is respected. It is not acceptable to lie on the mattresses without any cover over the mattress. Rowers are responsible for keeping their rooms clean during their stay and clearing and sweeping out their rooms on the day we vacate camp. The Director of Rowing (DOR) and Teacher in Charge (TIC) set ‘lights out’ times. After lights out there is to be no noise in the cabin areas Packing List Rowing uniform – cap, singlet, shorts, hoodie, polo shirt, socks, windbreaker, rowing bag, etc Training gear – shorts, t-shirts, socks Casual clothes Hat Running shoes Thermals – navy blue, long or short sleeved Rain coat Personal toiletries, including any medicines Sun block Blister prevention and treatment: 1 full roll of 3.5 cm wide strapping tape. Laundry There are large washing machines and dryers which are coin operated ($1 and $2 coins). A parent (or two) from each crew is responsible for their crew laundry which will be co-ordinated with the roster provided. It would be appreciated if each and every rower could provide $3 (in $1 or $2 coins) – this can be taped to their home baking container each time. Kitchen For safety we do not allow any rowers or siblings in the kitchen. First Aid There are a number of first aid boxes. 1. In the truck 2. Kitchen at Epworth - stays there the entire time 3. Small ones in each van 4. Mercer/Waitemata 5. Regatta Site – just a small one with basics. 6. In each coach boat – in a water-proof box which contains basic items, flares & thermal blankets etc At the regattas St John’s vehicle is on site and the club has medical professionals who will be assigned at each event. Accommodation – parents / supporters Tent / campervan sites are available to all parents and supporters. Your own camping equipment will be required. The cost per night for an adult or sibling child will be advised at a later date. This cost will include all meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is necessary to book your accommodation in advance so that catering can be organised.

Bookings are to be made with TGS Catering Management (not with the Camp directly). An email will be sent asking for this information. The rowers bunk rooms are for the rowers, and not for siblings to hang out in. If there is a rest time during the afternoon, family activities should be away from the rowers bunk rooms. Parents also have to be aware of how easily the noise carries in the evenings, across the camping area and also from the dining areas. At some of the accommodations there are bedrooms below the dining room. Do not drag the chairs in the dining area as the sound also carries to the rooms below. Be considerate of those staying below – especially after 9.00pm. 21

Facilities at Epworth Camp Address - Epworth Retreat & Recreation Centre, 116 Finlay Road, Hora Hora, RD2, Cambridge. www.epworth.co.nz Epworth is set on 10 acres beside the Waikato River and also maintains and utilises 2 acres of water frontage. Epworth offers a really lovely setting for camping. It is about half an hour drive from the Karapiro regatta site. Swimming pool - The use of the swimming pool (for rowers) is to be organized and supervised by the coaching staff. Please ask the DOR for permission before using the pool. Families using the pool must watch their own children. The supervision needs to be by someone over 16. Access to the pool, lower field and the river is through the dining hall, not the steps leading to the downstairs site. The River - There is no swimming or paddling in the river at any time. The water is not safe to swallow. Rowers must always disinfect and dress any minor cuts or abrasions each time they return from river training. The Gym - This will be set up with erg machines. It is available for all to use – unless the rowers are using it for training or erg sessions. Showers - Two blocks will be allocated to girls/women and two to boys/men. There is no swapping, even if there are unused showers. Dining hall - Parents are welcome to use this area at any time during the day and evening. The only request is that, after 9pm chairs do not get dragged over the floor. It is concrete and there is another school with sleeping accommodation directly below. Laundry - This is located on the lower level and there are large washing machines and dryers which are coin operated ($1 and $2 coins). Chiller - There is a chiller at Epworth Camp which parents can put personal food items in. Please name your items/bag so it is not used as communal food. There will be shelves allocated for this
