University of Connecticut Head Coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry 2008 University of Connecticut Rowing

Jennifer Sanford-Wendry Head Coach • Eleventh Season In 2004, Sanford saw the UConn junior varsity eight win the Dad Vail Championship. Prior to coming to UConn, Sanford was the novice women’s coach at the University of Pennsylvania, where she led the Quaker novice eight to the finals of the Eastern Sprints. In 1996 and 1997, she was the United States Junior National Development Team coach. Sanford, a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University, has been associated with rowing her entire life. She began rowing when she was seven years old and had her first race in a single when she was 10. Her coaching career began at age 16, when she began coaching youth programs for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club. After graduating from college, Sanford taught elementary school for three years while coaching the Liverpool High School women’s crew. In 1995, her Liverpool High School senior eight won the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship. In addition to her coaching responsibilities at UConn, she is a member of the Female Athlete Performance Committee. Sanford is also involved with the Riverfront Recapture rowing program in Hartford, Conn. as a summer camp coach. Sanford comes from a large coaching family. Her father, Bill Sanford, retired in 2002 after coaching the men’s crew at Syracuse University for 37 years. Sister Kris is the head women’s rowing coach at Syracuse. At Marist College, her cousin Tom Sanford is the Director of Rowing. Sanford resides in Coventry, Conn. with her husband Brian, sons Will and Wyatt and dog Libby.

J

ennifer Sanford-Wendry is in her 11th season as the head coach of the University of Connecticut rowing program in 2007-08.  She was named rowing coach in the fall of 1997 when women’s rowing became a varsity sport at UConn. Sanford was honored as the “Collegiate Coach of the Year” by the Dad Vail Regatta. The award is presented annually to a collegiate rowing coach that has had outstanding success and has also contributed to the Dad Vail Regatta, which is held each May in Phildelphia. Sanford led the team to its most successful season in 2005. The team won the points trophy at the Dad Vail Championship as the varsity eight won, the junior varsity eight finished second, and the novice eight finished third. In 2005 the team also finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championship – its highest finish ever at that event.  The second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four all finished third, while the varsity eight placed fifth, and the varsity four was sixth.

Jennifer Sanford-Wendry accepts the “Collegiate Coach of the Year” award at last year’s Dad Vail Regetta.

“Being the head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team has been tremendously rewarding.  I have had the opportunity to see the team grow each year.  We ask our student-athletes for three characteristics when they become a member of our program…positive attitude, positive effort and coachability.  When those characteristics are present great things happen.  Part of our programs success can be attributed to our support staff.  Amanda Kimball, our strength and conditioning coach, plays a major part in developing creative yet challenging workouts for our winter training program.  Our academic advisor Becky Taylor offers the support needed to accomplish our academic goals, as shown by our continued success in the classroom. Of most importance, being a member of the UConn rowing team means being a part of a second family, a family that helps you through thick and thin during your college experience and creates friendships that last a lifetime.” -- Jennifer Sanford-Wendry

2008 UConn Rowing

University of Connecticut 2008 Spring Preview 2008 University of Connecticut Rowing

T

he University of Connecticut rowing team has a challenging spring racing season ahead of them for 2008. Unlike past years, there is no one dominating class for the Huskies and Coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry will be looking for leadership out of each class. The Huskies begin their training in January when the team travels to Miami at the end of UConn’s winter break. The focus of the trip will be primarily on technique, utilizing small boats as often as possible, as 38 team members were selected to participate on this trip. Following the trip to Miami, the Huskies will have a seven-week indoor training session that will prepare them for the racing season, which will begin on March 15 with races against Barry and Miami. The indoor training period will be intense, but will have a lot of cross-training, including yoga once a week on a recovery day. UConn will have one weekend off upon their return from spring break racing and then will be in full swing with a very active racing schedule with competitions every weekend, finishing at the Dad Vail Championships on May 9-10. “The race schedule this spring gives us little to no time to play around with things,” says Sanford-Wendry. “I’m hoping to have boats set early on, so that each crew can focus on their training and on the upcoming races each week.” The last weekend of March will prove to be one of the toughest of the season for the Huskies. On March 29, UConn will take part in the Yankee Cup at Kingston, R.I., and face Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The following day, March 30, the Huskies travel to Philadelphia to race St. Joseph’s in the morning and Villanova in the afternoon. UConn then has two home matches on April 5 against Trinity and April 6 against Fairfield before taking part in the Knecht Cup on April 12-13 and travelling to Buffalo to face the Bulls, Colgate and Eastern Michigan on April 19. “I’m hoping that the training pays off and we can be successful across the board,” says Sanford-Wendry. “There are no easy races this year, and it is my goal to have the crews mentally and physically prepared for each weekend. Obviously, I would love to compete at our highest level for the BIG EAST Championship and Dad Vail Championship.” The BIG EAST Championship will be held this year on April 27 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Seniors Olga Solovyova, Katie Beasley, Monica Parker and Allyson Zoppa will have a strong impact on the speed of the boats this spring and their experience will be beneficial to any boat that they are in. Sarah Willhoft, Lizzy Dargie, Kristen Beasley and Rebecca Likar were a part of the very successful novice eight last year and have come back this year very motivated to build upon last years success. Junior Kathy Les has led the team on the ERG and will make a huge impact on the speed of the varsity eight. “I am excited about this spring,” says Sanford-Wendry. “We have great athletes that have put their hearts and souls into the team and I hope that the spring results will make the hard work pay off. I’d love to see people on the awards dock once again at the BIG EAST Championship and the Dad Vail Regatta.”

SANFORD-WENDRY ON BEASLEY: “We were so fortunate to have Katie return to UConn to pursue a master’s in kinesiology. Since she joined the team in her sophomore year, she has been a phenomenal leader. This fall, Katie took off the cox box and tried rowing which was a very valuable experience for her. She learned so much about how to be a great coxswain by experiencing things from the rower’s point of view. This spring she will be back in the coxswain seat. Katie brings a level of intensity into each practice and race that is like no other. The rowers look up to her, trust her and respect her dedication and commitment. She will play an integral part in the success of the Varsity Eight this spring. PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “Next year, I will continue to pursue my master’s degree in kinesiology at the University of Connecticut.”

She can turn any negative into a positive and is always a person who will light up a room. She has really excelled athletically in her senior year and it has been exciting to watch her develop over four years. As a captain, not only has she led the team on the water, but she has always made a very strong effort to involve the team in fun activities outside of practice, including a very exciting scavenger hunt this fall. Monica is a fierce competitor and will make a very strong impact on her boat this spring. Given Monica’s character, I can say without hesitation that no matter what she chooses to do in life, she will experience tremendous success.” PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation, I plan on taking some time to travel before pursuing a master’s degree or settling down in a career.”

She is the person who is always first to bring down the oars, bring down the launches and lend a hand where needed. She is 100% reliable across the board. Allyson could go down in history as being the best technical rower to ever go through UConn, as I have never seen a more flawless stroke than hers. The team has a lot of respect for all of the contributions she makes in all areas of our program. Although she is quiet in nature, she has a way of earning the respect of her teammates by her actions.” PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation, I hope to pursue my master’s degree and coach rowing, either at the collegiate or high school level.”

We have been fortunate to have her create various things for the team, ranging from personalized rowing photographs for last year’s senior class to drawings. She is a natural athlete and works incredibly hard every day to improve. She has been a leader on the ergometer since her novice year and has allowed others to improve by giving them something to shoot for. She is incredibly competitive, no matter what activity it is. She gives 110% and challenges her teammates to do the same. Olga is the busiest student-athlete I know. Outside of her rowing commitment, she excels in the classroom, is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has volunteered to do research with a doctor at the UConn Health Center and is applying to medical school to fulfill her dream of being an orthopedic surgeon. ot only does the UConn rowing program provide young women the chance to be student-athletes at the University of Connecticut, it also prepares them for the challenges of the next steps of life. Here are a few of the many success stories of the UConn rowing program.

Kristina Fedoruk ‘02

Cady Hart ‘02

“After graduating in 2002 with a degree in graphic design, I decided to pursue a master’s of science degree specializing in textile design at Philadelphia University. “I thought that rowing was something that I would forever cherish as only a college memory, but I was very fortunate to be running on Kelly Drive with my rowing jacket on and got stopped by a high school coach, who greeted me with open arms. So again, while I attended grad school in the day, I found comfort in rushing to afternoon practices, like the many years before, wiping paint off my hands and face! “While in Philadelphia, I was not only able to coach, but also gained experience in the corporate design world, working as a home textile designer for Anthropologie. Upon graduation from grad school, I moved to New York City to further my design aspirations. “I took a job as a print designer for Coach. I love designing for Coach and working with a team of designers that all share the same vision. From a young age, art and athletics have played a very important role in my life. One doesn’t often see the two in the same sentence, but they both require inspiration, dedication, persistence and most of all passion. “This constant combination in my life has taught me to form amazing partnerships, to realize my strengths and weaknesses, to respect all, to stumble gracefully and to always put 110% into everything that I do. To the student-athletes graduating this year, ‘Dream and Reach, your goals are attainable and once they have been achieved, continue to set them higher.’ I will forever hold my rowing family near and dear to my heart. They have had a wonderful impact on my life. Pain is temporary, Pride is FOREVER!”

“Since graduating from UConn, I continued my studies of health and wellness from multiple perspectives, integrating the mainstream with complementary and alternative approaches. “As a member of the UConn rowing team, I was able to experience first-hand the demands of high-level training and competition and have continuously utilized this experience through the past five years of my life. I have integrated this personal experience academically in both undergraduate and graduate training in exercise physiology and health and exercise science, respectively. “I have reached out with my talents to support both adults and youth in their pursuit of physical fitness as an instructor, coach and educator. I bring a unique blend of mind-body awareness to my approach. As a Certified Yoga Instructor, with specialties in children’s and prenatal Hatha yoga, I have grounded my advanced studies of physiology into practical, well-rounded workshops for group and individual clientele. “Most recently,  I have broadened my audience to the corporate world where I manage a Comprehensive Wellness Program for a worldwide computer technology corporation.”

Ursula Henwood ‘05 “After graduating in 2005, I started my career by working in public relations, and as fate would have it, accepted a job one year later working at the same event planning company as former rower Abbey Off. The transition from being roommates and boat mates to cubicle mates was seamless! “I am now back in Philadelphia and working in public affairs at Comcast’s corporate headquarters. I’m responsible for corporate giving, and ironically, I am on a team that consists of nine people. Needless to say, I’m quite familiar with that lineup! “My department actively works to tie key community investment initiatives with Comcast’s business objectives for not only the benefit of our brand, but also for the communities we serve. Most recently, I was involved in orchestrating the company’s most successful United Way fundraising campaign for its 90,000 employees nationwide by raising $4.3 million. I often draw upon my many fulfilling experiences at UConn, as they have fully prepared me for whatever may lie ahead.”

Gabbey LaChance ‘07

“After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 2002 with my master’s in physical therapy, I went on to Boston for work. After a year or two of working at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, I began thinking about medical school. I proceeded to Bryn Mawr College in the suburbs of Philadelphia, for a post-baccalaureate pre-medicine program. “This was a great decision as it wrapped up all of the requirements for medical school in one year while also allowing me to apply in an early decision manner to one of a small group of schools. “I was fortunate enough to be accepted at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Currently, I am in my third year of medical school and have enjoyed my journey from UConn to Rochester. “I definitely feel that, more than anything else, my time rowing at UConn prepared me for the path I have chosen. It gave me the confidence to pursue medical school, something I never thought about in college and the work ethic needed to excel, even amidst many very smart and motivated peers. Sometimes I feel like I just know how to work harder and barrel through tough times more than my colleagues, which I certainly attribute to rowing. Right now I am in the midst of deciding what type of residency to pursue, most likely orthopedics.”

“Since graduating in the spring of 2007, I have not stemmed too far away from my truly memorable undergraduate experience at UConn. I feel as though only upon graduation does one really look back on their past four years and acknowledge the great times and great achievements they have made. Upon doing so, I realized there was no better place then right here at UConn for me to further my education. “I am currently taking classes towards my master’s in special education, which I hope to attain by the spring of ‘09. I am also working as a full time special education instructional assistant at Vinton Elementary school in Mansfield, Conn. As an instructional assistant, I spend my time with a truly amazing little boy who works very hard and continues to make huge strides. His smile and determination to overcome obstacles is inspiring and confirms to me each day that special education is where my future lies. “During my free time, I continue to volunteer as much as possible. Every opportunity I have I return to Hartford where I have made many great friends through the Husky Sport program. UConn Athletics forged this opportunity for me to extend myself out into the community with this program. I am grateful to be able to continue my participation with Husky Sport, where I am constantly seeing the positive effects within myself and the children. “However, I have not been able to leave the rowing world behind either. I have enjoyed many afternoons volunteer coaching with the UConn walk-on/novice team where I am continuously reminded of the impact this team has on a person’s life. The lifelong skills that this program has taught me and many others are that of responsibility, hard-work, determination and to never give up are ones that I know will continue to lead myself and many others to success in the future.”

Heather Ruoff ‘02 “After graduating in 2002, I started my career as a  Systems  Analyst in Information Technology  at Hewitt Associates, a human resources consulting firm.  After the completion of a three year program at Hewitt, I was offered a Systems Analyst position at Winthrop University Hospital in New York, where I assist and administer the implementation of  new information technologies for the hospital’s patient platform. “On September 9, 2006, I married Steve Ruoff at Cherry Valley Country Club in Garden City, N.Y.  We currently reside in Garden City.”

Connecticut, Connecticut Thy sons and daughters true Unite to honor thy name Our fairest white and blue.
