The Catholic High School of Baltimore Annual Report of Gifts “Filled with trust in the goodHonoring the Past, Building the Future 2008 - 2009

Inside

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Catholic High, As we reflect on the past year at The Catholic High School of Baltimore, we are amazed at the changes that took place - changes that enabled us to provide our young women with the opportunity to grow and reach their potential in every aspect of Catholic High life. The changes touched each student each day. What we find most remarkable is what has not changed – the continued support you show us each year, and your efforts to give back to Catholic High so that our students will continue to receive a quality, college preparatory education in the Franciscan tradition.

Advancement

Annual giving is important because, like most independent schools, the cost of tuition at Catholic High does not cover the cost of educating your daughters. To close the Vandergriff ’01 - Coordinator gap, we need the help of the entire Catholic High community. Each year we ask that 100% of our current parents, faculty and staff, administration, past parents, trustees, of Public Relations/Marketing/ and alumnae make a gift to the Annual Fund at whatever level possible. Every gift Editor is important and every gift is appreciated. Your generosity sends a message to other funding sources, such as foundations, that you believe in and support our mission of Ms. Kimberly Becker ’02 empowering young women – an important factor when applying for grants. Coordinator of Alumnae

Mrs. Emily Olszewski

Relations & Special Events Sister Margaret Lewis, OSF Volunteer

Some of you have just begun your partnership with The Catholic High School of Baltimore while others cannot remember a time when the Catholic High family was not an integral part of your own. Just the simple act of donating to the 2009-2010 Annual Fund, Honoring the Past, Building the Future, is a testament to your great belief in the values-based, individualized educational experience that Catholic High offers each of its students. So we are asking you to continue to believe, continue to support, and continue to give.

Empowered by Gospel values and rooted in the spirit and tradition of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi, The Catholic High School of Baltimore, a sponsored institution of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, is dedicated to the education of young women in an environment that fosters Christian attitudes of dignity and respect for the human person and all of creation. In our mission we recognize that through education the empowerment of women can effect the transformation of our society; therefore we challenge our school community to academic excellence, to responsible leadership, and to Christian community service.

May God bless your generosity to The Catholic High School of Baltimore. Lux Tua Luceat,

Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. ’68 President

Gifts for Current Programs

Gifts Planned for the Future

Gifts of Cash. A gift of cash is the most common gift, often given in the form of a personal check payable to The Catholic High School of Baltimore. Credit card gifts are becoming more popular because of our on-line capabilities and the rewards offered by particular credit card companies. Many donors prefer to make a pledge as it gives them the opportunity to complete their gift over a period of time.

Bequests. This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming Catholic High as beneficiary. It can reduce estate tax.

Gifts of Stock. A gift of stock may be transferred to Catholic High, avoiding capital gains tax.

Charitable Remainder Trusts. This form of support transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays income back to the donor for life, or for a specific period of time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction.

Gifts of Property. There are several options available when dealing with real estate. An outright gift of a house, land, or vacation property avoids capital gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to give property and retain the use of it for his or her lifetime. Matching Gifts. More than 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs. Many times, a gift can have a double effect because of an employer’s matching gift. When making this type of gift, a donor must mail the matching gift form provided by his or her human resources department with the gift.

Charitable Gift Annuity. This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his or her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets.

Life Insurance. If Catholic High is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy becomes eligible for a tax deductible gift. For more information about giving to Catholic High, contact Marcy SheaFrank ’63, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 410.732.6200 ext. 243 or mshea-frank@thecatholichighschool. org.

News Open House 2010 brings big numbers On Saturday, November 6, over 170 prospective students visited Catholic High’s halls and classrooms. Over 50 student ambassadors acted as tour guides walking the guests through the school and giving them pertinent information about classes, curriculum, and athletics. Parents and students were impressed and amazed at the new technology that is offered and used by students and teachers in the classrooms. English faculty members Mrs. Karen Gracki Mitchell ’92 and Mrs. Sharon Johnston demonstrated the use of the AverPens with students. The AverPen combines interactive products such as an interactive white board, student response systems, and wireless slates. They can be used on any surface, giving the teacher and students the ability to interact freely in the classroom and move around while doing so. Teachers are not restricted to one white board or projector and students can more readily participate in classwork. Ms. Dianne Bridickas Kestler ’80, with the help of two student volunteers, showed off the new enTourage eDGeTM dualbook that will be piloted in spring 2011 with a small group of current students. This new technology combines the use of an e-reader and iPad, allowing students to read on one side and write, access the internet, etc. on the other. We look forward to providing each incoming freshman with an enTourage eDGeTM in the 2011-2012 school year.

Technology students also showed the middle school students and their parents the mini netbooks available to students.

“I couldn’t have been more pleased about how everything came together that day,” said Ms. Brooke Sterrett, Director of Admission. “It was the culmination of many peoples’ hard work and dedication. The building looked great and everyone’s enthusiasm was soaring. Probably the most exciting aspect for me was how much technology was being utilized by each department.”

Student shows visitors how the art classes can utilize the new MACs.

Parents enjoyed an overview of our new and improved STEM Program in the Distance Learning Center.

Fall 2010 Wrap-Up AUTUMN NIGHT GALA: An Evening for the Stars On Saturday, October 9, 2010 over 200 parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends of Catholic High enjoyed an elegant evening showcasing the new Sr. Arnoldine O’Connell, OSF Dining Hall. Attendees were greeted in style at the entrance to the new Gallery by a red carpet and student escorts. The money raised throughout the evening in the silent auction and raffles benefits academic programs, tuition assitance, and capital improvements. We thank all who supported this evening and look forward to another successful event in 2011.

Alumnae Memorial Mass Alumnae gathered on Saturday, October 30, 2010 to honor deceased alumnae and to celebrate their Catholic High roots. The President’s Reception followed honoring those donors who generously support Catholic High with monetary donations and are members of the President’s Circle.

Christmas Project If you graduated prior to the 1980’s, you probably remember getting a letter from TCHS every fall. It contained letters and numbers that matched a master list of needy children and seniors. You were asked to buy the item mentioned and then return it to the cafeteria, on a given Sunday in December. Santa was there giving candy canes to the children of alumnae along with cookies and punch being offered to all. After that date you would find a multitude of boxes of wrapped gifts in all the hallways of the school. Sometime in the 1980’s the Christmas Project stopped being handled by the school and a former graduate, Marcella Budzik Zemski ’50, took over to a lesser degree. She handled it out of her home on Dundalk Avenue. For about 30 years she helped other alumnae and their immediate families who needed a hand at Christmas time. As long as donated funds and gifts allowed, help was also given to individuals/families that were recommended by alumnae. Unfortunately, Marcella passed away in December of 2008. My granddaughter, Suzanne Remeikis ’08, and I took over the TCHS Alumnae Christmas Project last year. Ronnie Annarino ’56 was kind enough to offer to make the contact phone calls. Some alumnae give money, some shop for gifts, and others give gift cards. Last year we were able to give gifts to 15 of our own graduates, along with 87 children and 54 low income seniors. If you know of someone who needs help, you can contact me with the necessary information. The name and information, which will be held in confidence. If you can afford to help support the project, we can use donations of money, gifts, and gift cards. I can be reached at 410-284-1520, 1781 Brookview Rd., Dundalk, MD 21222, or via email at [email protected]. We could definitely use your help. Thanks and Blessings, Bonita (Bonnie) Bures Lee ’60
