LEADERSHIP 2011 - 2012 Board of Trustees

Dear Friends, As I begin my fourth year at Bishop High I believe more firmly than ever in the Bishop High difference. That difference, simply put, is the relationships among students, families, alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and trustees. A school’s culture can be defined by the values it instills, beliefs shared and the traditions celebrated. This culture provides the foundation for our informal curriculum. It is this culture that enables us to really know our students as individuals and it remains with our graduates long after their four years of formal curriculum end at graduation. Our school’s culture is rooted in our mission to promote the spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional development of our students. The fruits of this work are seen in many aspects of campus life. This spirit and camaraderie were ever-present last spring during the 2011 playoff games as the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made tremendous runs at CIF titles. And for those of us privileged to attend the senior class retreat in March, we witnessed students and faculty as they shared experiences of personal faith journeys. The presence of God’s work was evident in each and every participant.

D r. Pa u l Ha r r i n gto n Hea d o f S ch o o l

Many of the remarkable successes of our students are a direct result of the wonderful opportunities provided by our generous benefactors. You, our benefactors, help make the Bishop High difference. Your unwavering support and unparalled generosity have afforded hundreds of students the chance to learn and grow in this special environment. It takes the entire Bishop community to make a difference in the lives of our high school students. The following pages celebrate the partnership that we as faculty, staff and administration share with you, our parents, alumni and friends. We thank you! Kindly,

A D VA N C E M E N T There are many ways for you to benefit from Bishop. You can attend a football game or see a play. Another way you can make a difference is to help make us stronger. Whether it is volunteering your time, helping organize a reunion or reception, or making a financial contribution to the Adopt-AStudent Program or the Annual Fund, your support is greatly appreciated.

The Advancement Office coordinates the fundraising and public relations efforts of Bishop High School. Students have benefited from the generosity of parents, alumni, faculty , staff, community members and Trustees who support the school's mission, and understand the importance of a first rate college preparatory Catholic education. Whether you are an alum of Santa Barbara Catholic High or Bishop Garcia Diego High School, your association with Bishop lasts a lifetime. But our community does not end there. Parents and faculty members, both past and present, are also an important part of the extended Bishop family.

Visit our website www.Bishopdiego.org to learn more about our Cardinal Legacy Society or to become a member of the Head of School Circle or better yet, let’s get together in person and talk about all the great things going on at Bishop! For more information about the Advancement office please contact Lori Willis, Director of Advancement, at 805-967-1266 x 119 or email her at [email protected].

Bishop is an amazing place, and the Office of Advancement is here to serve you. We are committed to providing and creating opportunities for members of the Bishop High family to take full advantage of the resources available within our own community. As strong as the programs and the facilities are at Bishop, it is you, our friends and family, who are our greatest asset.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the cadre of people that makes Bishop such a remarkable place. First, I would like to thank all of our current families, alumni and generous benefactors who continue to support Bishop year after year. It is only with your support that we can continue to implement our mission and grow our school. Because of you, we were able to: • • • • •

Offer financial aid to 60% of our school families Convert our campus to solar power Completely renovate our science classrooms and outfit them with state-of-the-art supplies, software and technology Beef up our support for the Arts with a wonderful Evening of the Arts program Re-wire the entire campus to meet the future technology needs of the school

It is because of you that we are able to make a difference in the lives of our students on a daily basis. I would also like to thank our tremendous administration, faculty and staff for the exemplary job that they perform on a daily basis. You truly go the extra mile to support, nurture, and educate our students. We are so blessed to have such a dedicated team to prepare our students to be “Ready for College and Ready for Life.”

M a r i a Faz i o, R . N . Ch a i r, B o a rd o f Tr us te e s

I would like to thank our students— without whom we would not exist. I have gotten to know many of you throughout the years, and I am constantly amazed at your poise, integrity, intellect and grace. Thank you parents who sacrifice and make the choice to give your child an independent, Catholic, co-educational, collegepreparatory education. You are making an investment in your student’s future, for which we are grateful. Last, I have to thank the tremendous people who make up our Board of Trustees. You volunteer your time, gifts and talents to the school on a daily basis. I would especially like to thank Peter Da Ros, Sr. Angela Hallahan, Ralph Iannelli, Carla O’Neill, Lynette Patters and B. Williams for their service over the past 5 years on the board. You have been instrumental in the success of Bishop. Go Cardinals!

The Bishop difference is – FAITH! All of us at Bishop Garcia Diego High School are called to be ministers of the faith. Regardless of one’s religious affiliation, all are encouraged to explore, develop and live out our individual beliefs and spiritual journeys. We are constantly challenging one another to teach our faith by living it on a daily basis. We work every day at creating an ideal Catholic Christian school community. It is the difference! Putting it simply, our liturgies are sensational. They are moments of real celebrations of faith! The campus ministry team works diligently to create Eucharistic celebrations that connect with the Bishop community by warmly welcoming new students in the fall and honoring the Juniors as upperclassmen; by recognizing Seniors with their mothers and fathers and appreciating alumni as special members of the Cardinal community. We celebrate our graduates at a Baccalaureate Mass in one of our local supportive parishes. Retreats are moments that we take to draw back from our normal world in order to know God more and to find Christ within ourselves and in others. At Bishop, each grade level has the opportunity to participate in retreats that focus on growing in faith and unity as children of God. The Senior Retreat is one that typically stands out as quite memorable for our graduates. Throughout the year we remember other parts of our all-important faith walks by participating in activities that correlate with the liturgical year such as penance services, the recitation of the rosary, Thanksgiving reflection, the lighting of the Advent wreath and a May Crowning, just to name a few. We are grateful to have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel three days a week, supported by many members of our local Catholic community. During the school year, every student at Bishop High is called to participate and complete a specified number of service hours. The purpose is to provide, through personal and community outreach, the experience of God’s grace, which will help students in their faith journeys. Through active participation, students develop new friends, rejoice in discovering talents, experience the joy of giving, and glorify God. It is with much excitement that we look forward to the addition of our new Ministry Center! This center promises to add an incredible component to the ministry program. Be on the lookout for an announcement about its grand opening and inaugural blessing. For more information about the Campus Ministry program, please contact Jennifer Winnewisser, Director of Campus Ministry at 805.967.1266, x 208 or email her at [email protected]. At the end of each school day, after all is said and done, the students are reminded the most important aspect of all, and that is to “Remember God loves you Bishop!”

The Parent Advisory Board is a service organization made up of the parents or guardians of currently enrolled students. Parent Advisory Board representatives are selected each year to support the needs of the class they represent, along with addressing the general needs of the school. The Parent Advisory Board focuses on fostering cooperation, communication and community among all elements of the school and provides valuable services to the school community by orchestrating support for student events that enrich each current student's high school experience. Parents are encouraged to bring their enthusiasm and skills to make campus life for students that much more memorable. Together they support the class retreats, Spirit Week, Prom and the Evening of the Arts. PAB sponsors an After Prom Party that offers our students a safe After Prom experience. This event is widely supported by our parents and by the larger community. It is a wonderfully unique experience to serve with fellow parents and journey through Bishop together.

Buccaneer Bash!

was the theme for the Bishop High Gala Auction held on March 5, 2011 on the school campus. The three amazing chairs/pirate wenches were Claire ( Bohnett) 81’ Mon, Esther (Van Wingerden) 84’ Brand and Anna Tetherow, along with a large group of enthusiastic parent volunteers who helped to make this year’s event the most successful in the school’s history. It was truly a privilege for Bishop to honor and thank Ralph and Melissa Iannelli. They have been ardent supporters of our school and its mission for many years. During the “Live” portion of the event the Iannelli’s offered a special cash match to the Adopt-A-Student paddle raise, inspiring over 85% of the dinner guests to donate. The Bishop High community is profoundly grateful to Ralph and Melissa for their unwavering support of our school and its students. We would also like to thank all of the Jack Sparrow table sponsors and a very “special” thank you to Ashley (Parker) 82’ & Tim Snider and The Fess Parker Winery for their donation of “Pirate Pinot” bottled in Honor of Ralph.

We would be remiss not to thank Heather Melchiori for the unique and one-of–a-kind donations she and her team helped acquire raising the bar for the live auction. This premier fundraising event remains one of the cornerstones of our school. We want to thank everyone who helped to make this year’s event such a huge success. All of the funds raised at this event go towards our Adopt-A-Student Program which helps qualified students afford a Bishop High education.

Bishop = Belonging

“Small is the number of people who see with their eyes and think with their minds.”

bonds of this tight knit community remain strong after 50+ years and that is truly a blessing.

As the Director of Admission here at Bishop, the question I get most often is “what makes your school different from other private high schools?” Putting aside for a moment all of the obvious benefits of our curriculum, campus and dedicated faculty, what comes to mind most often when I answer that question is the word “community.” Bishop is a place that welcomes you early and often. My kids grew up playing tournaments in the gym, attending summer sports camps and going to Bishop football and basketball games. They were de facto members of the Bishop community long before they ever applied for admission. Once enrolled, they became full-fledged members of the Bishop community on many different levels. Their classmates got to know each other while preparing for Spirit Week, their respective athletic teams bonded during practices and competitions, and over time they formed lasting friendships with peers and teachers alike. We parents benefit from this sense of community as well. We are welcome to be on campus for all school activities; we support each other in what I have termed “child logistics” (also known as driving everyone everywhere) and a great many of us socialize together quite often. We remain a part of the Bishop community even after our kids head off to college. It is always so nice to see former students and parents return to campus for Alumni games or to bump into a fellow BDHS grad out in the Santa Barbara community at large. Through the good times and the bad the

A few weeks ago we took the “generations” photo as we do every year for this publication. It is interesting to see the currently enrolled children and grandchildren of BDHS alumni assembled all in one spot. While looking at the image I was struck by the diversity of the kids in the photo, even though they were called together because of something they shared in common. There were artists, athletes, mathletes, cheerleaders and drama students represented. It was a nice reminder that Bishop has something to offer just about everyone. The bottom line is that Bishop Diego is an academically rigorous, faith based, college preparatory high school with the added benefit of being part of a wonderful community. So why not bring your children and grandchildren on to the campus as often as possible. Help them to become part of this place and ease their transition to high school when the time comes. Which brings me to my last point, when the time for high school does roll around…please do come see me! For information on admission to Bishop Diego High School please contact Ashley (Parker) Snider ’82 at 805-967-1266 x 118 or e-mail her at [email protected]

in MEMORY Vic Bottiani ‘49

May 2, 1931 March 17-2011 Vic Bottiani, along with other members of the Bishop High Dad’s Club, started the golf tournament 40 years ago. This year was the first time in 40 years Vic would not be there to support Bishop. Vic Loved sports and over the years he supported not only Bishop but UCSB as well, and was a huge Dodger fan. Vic, on occasion, felt that he could do a better job of coaching than whoever was coaching and he absolutely knew he was the best official and never made a bad call. Vic was a alum of Catholic High’s Class of 1949. He sent his children and grandchildren to Bishop High as well. This tournament would not have continued over these last 40 years had it not been for the vision and support of the late Vic Bottiani. We thank him for giving so generously of himself!

Have you ever watched clips of a movie without a musical score? It’s not the same, is it? Likewise, without Beverly Pfeiler VanWingerden’s passion for music, our school community would be a lesser place. Our students in the Advanced Band class benefit tremendously from her love of and expertise in the field of music. The school as a whole then benefits from the hours of patient practice she oversees to ensure the critical acclaim of our concert band. Beverly is a member of the Bishop’s graduating class of 1969. After marriage to Jerry VanWingerden and the birth of four children, Bev went back to college, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from UCSB. Fortunately her allegiance to her Alma Mater was strong and she accepted a position teaching music here at Bishop Diego in 1998. In addition to writing for local church groups, last fall Beverly took up the challenge of composing a musical score for Bishop’s winter production of Dead Man Walking. None other than the National Coordinator of the DMW School Project asked for permission to use Beverly’s composition in high school and college productions around the country and throughout Europe as well. Not bad for a local gal who hails from the tiny beach community of Carpinteria. So we thank you Bev, for all you do to enrich the curriculum and create the soundtrack for Bishop Diego High School.

ALUMNI EVENTS Th 40th annual BGDHS golf tournament was held at the Glen Annie Golf Club on Friday, May 6, 2011. Thanks to our generous sponsors, volunteers, tournament planning committee, raffle, auction donors, and participants. This year’s event was again sold out and raised over $28,000. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament are used to support the BDHS Legacy Scholarship that recognizes students who are the children or grandchildren of a Bishop alumni. in MEMORY Vic Bottiani ‘49

We thank him for giving so generously of himself!

bonds of this tight knit community remain strong after 50+ years and that is truly a blessing.

Kindly,
