Letter from the

Head of School

Dear Friends, Change. Often the concept of change elicits fear and uneasiness about outcomes. However, change is also exciting and necessary. Recently, there has been a lot of change at Stratford Friends School. Last year, we moved to Newtown Square—a move that served to strengthen the way we provide an outstanding educational opportunity to students with learning differences.

Our Mission Stratford Friends School educates elementary and middle school-age students with language-based and similar learning differences through a structured, multisensory program that celebrates students’ strengths, builds self-esteem, and develops self-advocacy. Guided by Quaker principles, the school provides individualized attention and instruction in an intimate, caring environment.

Stratford Friends School

Gifts Report 2009-10

This year, we added a 7th grade to our program—an addition that was made possible by our location and requested for years by many students and families seeking consistency and support through challenging middle school years (next year will see our first 8th grade class). Our middle school students also benefit from a one-to-one laptop computer program made possible through a grant from the Lenovo Corporation. This year too, we created model classrooms. These are demonstrations of what our future renovations hold for the rest of the building—smaller, intimate learning environments, supportive of our 6:1 student to teacher ratio in K-6 and 10:1 in 7th and 8th grades; state-of-the-art technology, and new amenities for students and teachers. As you can see, change at Stratford Friends does not mean worry or fear. Change at Stratford Friends means continuously developing our program to be the best it can be in order to meet the needs of our students. This involves reviewing and critiquing what we do and how we do it in order to move forward. Making these changes is not easy, nor can it be done single-handedly. Community-wide support is necessary. That support comes from you, the Stratford Friends community of parents, alumni, friends, Board members, and faculty and staff. This year, once again, your support totaled nearly $100,000. That is a testament to the commitment and faith you have in the work we do here. I’ve written often about the need to believe in Stratford Friends. Clearly, you do believe in us and our Mission. That feeling transcends the gifts we receive and makes its way through our community

to our students. We are guided by the belief we have in the students that attend our school. There is nothing more important than the work we do with and for them—after all, that’s why we’re all part of this community. We also recognize our good fortune, which is a testament to the support you have provided. Your support helps make our new home a reality. We have been able to expand our location, our student body and our program. We continue to move forward with plans to renovate the building to further meet the needs of our students and to provide teachers with more opportunity to offer the best possible instruction. All of this has been and is being done during a time of economic and financial uncertainty, yet these are concrete examples of how doing things differently leads to something exceptional. Your consistent and generous support provides a foundation on which we can move forward with confidence. As you look over the names on these pages, you will see how many of you answered my question: Where else would you rather be than right here right now? There is no better time to be a part of something exceptional. You have my sincerest thanks for your continued support of Stratford Friends School, and I invite you to come and see all we offer and all that is new. You will see the excitement of our change. Sincerely,

Timothy P. Madigan, Ph.D. Head of School

A Message From

The clerk of the board

Dear Friends, I am pleased to report that we have successfully completed a year in which Stratford Friends School experienced several significant transitions. The most formidable was a transition to a new campus, which was accomplished to the delight of the students and their families, largely because of the dedication of our Head of School, our faculty and our staff. Our success in transitioning from K through 6 to K through 8 can be measured by our opening enrollment of 12 students in our middle school, double our projections when we were planning this expansion. Finally, our School Committee has responded well to the transition of leadership from our esteemed former clerk, Will Scull, to the new Clerk as evidenced by the continued commitment of its members to be faithful stewards of the Stratford Friends mission. Best regards, Paul Ryan Clerk, Board of Trustees
