Question: What struggles do migrant farm workers face in the United States? Overview This text set has been designed for a high school Spanish class – level 4 or 5. The activities in this text set are designed as starting points for teachers to help their students understand the struggles that migrant farm workers face in the United States. Using a variety of infographics, nonfiction texts, online videos, podcasts and articles, teachers will integrate interpretive communication skills of reading, listening and viewing and presentational skills into social studies inquiry lessons. The set begins with engagement activities to help teachers assess students’ prior knowledge about migrant farm workers in the United States and for the students to investigate photographs and infographics related migrant farm workers in the United States. Students will also view a short video clip from McFarland, USA that will give them an appreciation of the hard work of migrant farm workers. In the explore phase, students will learn about the struggles of migrant farm workers in the United States as they view online videos, listen to podcasts, and read articles in both Spanish and English. For the explain phase, students will create an oral presentation on the struggles of migrant farm workers in the United States that they will present to their peers in Spanish, using new vocabulary related to the topic and sharing authentic resources. Each group will choose a specific struggle to focus on: 1) educational challenges 2) living conditions 3) working conditions 4) health care 5) social relations 6) other. Finally, in the expansion and assessment phase, the entire class will participate in a “fishbowl” conversation and then work together to create a mural that supports justice for migrant farm workers in the United States that they will display it in a public forum.
