The Roots of Cement Presented by Dr. Luke Snell, Professor Emeritus, Engineering

Universal Design/Aging in Place - Creating an Interior for your home Presented by Diane Rosen, Professional Interior Designer, LEED AP - ID+C, CAPS - Aging in Place Certified

Cements and concrete have been around for centuries before they evolved into the most used building material. Its wide use is attributed to the fact that uses local materials and thus the cost is low compared to other building materials. One of the roots of cement can be traced back to Egypt and techniques used to build the pyramids. While Dr. Snell was at SIUE, he did some original (and fun) research and thinks he as the answer to why they used concrete in the pyramids.

With 25+ years of experience in residential design, renovations and new build sites, Diane will discuss Universal Design/Aging in Place and how it applies to our home interiors. The 4 largest issues as we age in our homes are our kitchens, baths, lighting and entries. Over 80% of those entering 55 years+ would prefer to stay in their homes - with minimal modification to making that adjustment can enjoy their golden years in the comfort and lifestyle they deserve.
