BOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL BULLETIN Week ending Friday 13 March 2015

From Jonathan Maddox, Headteacher

________________________________________ THE BOURNE SUPREMACY - FURTHER MATHEMATICS SUPPORT PROGRAMME EVENT
Report by Year 10 students Joseph Cuffling, Adam Hawkins, Charlotte Pratt and Andrew Martin
A group of four Year 10 students competed in a team maths challenge organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme at Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ Grammar School on Wednesday 4 March. After six hard-fought rounds – including Venn diagrams and the cursed art of origami – we emerged as true victors, beating all the opposition, including a very competitive Leicester High School team and the two teams from Sleaford led by the former Head of Maths at BGS, Mr Russell. Our team achieved full marks in the Venn diagram round but struggled to cope with folding paper into shapes. After the frustrating origami round we were 14 points behind Leicester High School. However, we fought back valiantly to win the final round by a staggering 18 points – bringing us into the lead by 4 points. The team gained some important teamwork skills as well as exploring new and challenging fields of mathematics. Collectively, the team felt that origami has no place in a maths challenge and made recommendations on the feedback form for it to be excluded from future competitions. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and wish to thank all parties involved. A L AT E C H R I S T M A S F O R AMAZON WARD
Our Head Students, accompanied by Year 12 student and former Amazon Ward patient Heidi Pleasance visited Peterborough Hospital earlier this week to deliver the presents that parents and students had kindly donated. The patients and ward staff were clearly very grateful for the gifts; children’s wards do receive donations of gifts from time to time but the gifts are not always ones that are bestsuited to teenage patients. Included in the picture is Rosemary Hardgrave, who organises activities for the patients.

YEAR 11 THEATRE TRIP TO DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE
Report by Amy Toseland, Year 11
On Wednesday 25 February a group of around 90 Year 11 students, including myself, went to the theatre at the Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham to see a performance of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. We are currently studying the book by Robert Louis Stevenson as part of our English Literature IGCSE so we were hoping to consolidate our knowledge and understand the book further after seeing a staged adaptation. This performance was a unique interpretation of the book, and gave a modern twist that linked to the key themes. The actor playing the characters of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde did an excellent job of transforming from Jekyll to Hyde. His actions matched the description in the book almost perfectly, as he threw his body across the set to demonstrate the ‘racking pangs’ and mentioned how he felt ‘deadly nausea’. At one point in the play a conversation took place between Jekyll and Hyde. This doesn’t happen in the book but it gave us an understanding of the power Hyde had over Jekyll and how vicious he was towards him. This scene also linked to the theme of duality, as one actor was playing both characters. The play itself was rather different from the original book, bringing in various components such as a cure for cancer and women’s rights. Although these won’t necessarily help us in the future with our examination preparation, they kept the play interesting to watch, and showed a different perspective of the book, such as the cure linking to the theme of drugs. Some of my fellow students viewed the actions of Mr Hyde as rather extreme, but most agreed the actors did an excellent job of portraying their characters’ personalities and we all managed to take something from the play that can help with our knowledge.

ARTWORK
This week’s artwork, following last week’s presentation of some work by Year 7 students, is by a student at the other end of the School. These works are by Georgina Hall (Year 13) and are in response to her own personal theme - Representing my trace of being as a fragile moment in a much larger world.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY - NATIONAL FINAL
Report by Mr C Ray, Director of PE & Sport
On Saturday 14 March a number of Bourne Grammar students will be representing Lincolnshire, competing in the final of the English Schools’ Cross-Country Championships. The event, held in Blackburn, should see the best 8 athletes from each county compete in one of the six different age groups. Selection has required students to be selected from the South Lincs Championships in November (top 20), progress to the County Final in January and finish in the top 8 and then, in most cases, be one of the first 8 runners home for Lincolnshire at the Anglian Championships that were held in Ipswich in February. This is an outstanding achievement for all students who get to represent Lincolnshire, but to reach the English Schools is the pinnacle for students in Cross-Country. Those representing Lincolnshire in Blackburn are: Junior girls (Years 8 & 9): Hana Ray (Year 8); Isabel Spinley (Year 9) Junior boys (Years 8 & 9): Aaron Hunt (Year 9) Senior girls (Years 12 & 13): Bethany Howells (Year 12) Senior boys (Years 12 & 13): James McCrae (Year 13); Michael Cawood (Year 12). Others (in addition to those above), who also represented Lincolnshire in Ipswich at the Anglian Championships were: Year 7 girls: Elin James (no English Schools’ competition takes place in this age group) Year 7 boys: Lewis Woodfine (no English Schools’ competition takes place in this age group) Intermediate girls (Years 10 & 11): Alice Callcut (Year 10) Intermediate boys (Years 10 & 11): Scott Taylor (Year 11).

EQUESTRIAN - Report by Mrs A-M Durno
Hollie Lewis (Year 7) has been out in action at Arena UK competing in classes with enormous numbers of competitors.  Competing in Indoor Eventing she achieved a 5th placing in one class and 4th in the next. Hollie had to jump a complex course of rustic-style jumps against the clock.  She has to jump them clear to get anywhere but to be placed was brilliant as the turnout was impressive – she faced really stiff competition. Sophie Vear (Year 12) was out show-jumping at 90cm and 1 metre.  She came third and first respectively, going double-clear in both rounds.

Both girls are using the local competitions with a view to training for NSEA forthcoming events including show-jumping and a one-day horse trials that is coming up. Sophie will be competing with British Eventing this coming weekend at Oasby.
 INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT
Sarah Arthey (Year 11) has passed her Grade 6 Flute examination. This is a significant achievement and Sarah has done well to achieve success at this elevated level whilst balancing her musical studies against her preparation for the impending GCSE examinations. Congratulations.
