“Where Imagination and Education Come to Play” This interactive play city allows children to “pretend” at being grownups, while helping parents become fully engaged with their child’s development. At Pretend City, children can experience, first-hand, the daily business and bustle of an actual city. With over 15,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits and activities, Pretend City brings life to every profession, service and day-to-day necessity related to a city existence. Children can do anything and everything — from grocery shopping, to banking, to visiting the doctor. They can even collect their pay from an ATM! Among some of the standout features of Pretend City are the fire station, police station and café. Pretend City proudly welcomes many new citizens every day — a sure testament to the skill of a creative and capable design team.

Doctors Without Borders, Washington, DC Architect/Designer: Jamie Matthews Working with: Virginia Tech School of Architecture and Design Products by: Armstrong Playing off the “without borders” idea, the concept incorporates a sculpture stretching into each room on the floors, walls and ceilings, to create a borderless environment. Open space planning generates interaction, while clear and semi-translucent glass walls provide a “lighter” feel. These elements combined create a bright and spacious feel for workers and guests. The MSF logo is red, and so is the color scheme of the space. An orangy-red is used as the accent color for the sculpture used throughout. Since red is such a strong color, the rest of the color pallete is light and neutral.
