■ With today’s structural steel framing, grace, art and function can come together in almost limitless ways; it offers new solutions and opportunities, allowing architects to stretch their imagination and actually create some of the challenging structures they have designed in their minds. What was once thought impossible is now a reality. Structural steel’s low cost, strength, durability, design flexibility, adaptability, recyclability and sustainability continue to make it the material of choice in building construction. ■

2009 EUROPEAN STEEL DESIGN AWARDS ■ Outstanding design in steel construction emphasizes the many advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture. The European Steel Design Awards are given by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) every two years to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction. The 2009 Award winning projects of 18 European countries have been presented to an international audience in Barcelona on September 17th, 2009. ■

2

ITALY Three bridges in Reggio Emilia

■ These three road bridges are built as a whole above the new high speed railway line between Milan and Bologna. The central one is a 221 metres classic but very elegant bow string with a central layer of cables. The two others are based on a concept using a monumental transverse variable hexagonal box girder arch supporting sets of cables where the higher cables are the shortest, producing an original visual effect at different angles. This gives these two 179 metres structures the aspect of huge musical instruments. The overall design as well as the finely crafted details enhances the importance of this infrastructure scheme. ■

LUXEMBOURG European Court of Justice, Luxembourg

■ New extension of the Justice Palace originally built in 1973 in weathering steel, this new facility encircles the old courthouse and provides a link between the existing buildings. It is organized as a square built on slender steel columns giving free access to the ground floor. Two 100 metres towers complete the scheme. This straightforward concept provides a spatial unity and a new dignity to this important European institution. The delicate use of materials, particularly of steel, gives a touch of lyrism to this consistent “collage”. ■

THE NETHERLANDS Kraanspoor Office Building, Amsterdam

■ This office building is unique due to its location: it is built with a visible steel structure above a 50 years old concrete crane way extending 270 metres along a shipyard in Amsterdam Harbour. Its three levels float in a detached position. The result is a striking contrast between the massive concrete structure and the light new building. The double façade completely glazed provides outstanding views over the surrounding harbour landscape. Water underneath is used for cooling and heating the building. It is a very fine example of new architecture and design combining reuse of historical artefacts with contemporary features. ■

■ The original asymmetric Y-shaped plan of this bridge is designed to facilitate the link between the city centre and the park extending on the other bank. The all steel cable-stayed 90 metres bridge is supported by twin inclined cigar-shaped masts rising up to 47 metres. This form helps to integrate the bridge in the river landscape and allow for both navigation and smooth crossing for pedestrians. An appropriate lighting underline the elegance of the bridge at night and dramatise the pinpointed form of the masts. This bridge was built in total compliance with the requirements of sustainable development, combining fast erection and limited impact on the environment. ■

■ Replacing an old bascule bridge, this new facility – 4th largest in the world - extends over 80 metres, which allow the Panamax class ships to access the Leixoes harbour. Two solid blue painted portal frames raise 42 metres high in the sky, competing with the neighbouring cranes. The key system of the bridge is that the deck is supported by foldable tierods when the bridge is opened to the circulation. The work was conducted in only four months of auto traffic interruption: a real performance combining accuracy of the design and the fabrication despite the 300 tons of each bascule bridge deck. ■

■ This multifunctional complex combines four office buildings, an exhibition and conference centre and a hotel. The four blocks are linked by a courtyard used as a public space. It is covered by a cylindrical partly transparent roof, with 22 metres span arch trusses. The main design criterion was flexibility. The architectural concept is based on a visible structural frame. This led, altogether with specific precautions regarding seismic resistance, to an atypical bracing system, allowing a dissipative reduction coefficient of the seismic action. ■

■ An extension of an old covered stand in concrete, this new roof expands over the remaining three stands to finally complete and modernize this 1950’s stadium, bringing its capacity to 12 500 spectators. The new architecture of the stadium selfconsciously meets the old without touching it and, thus, together, they form a unique whole. The tribunes are covered with a cantilevered roof with an overhang of more than 25 metres. Flexibility, easier processing, durability and the simple maintenance of steel were key factors to select steel as a material in this elegant project. ■

■ This powerful yet delicate looking building is located in the heart of a new area of Barcelona dedicated to innovation. It is not only impressive thanks to its structural system: two rows of portalframes connected by 4 bridge like roof girders lifted in place on which the façades and floors are suspended, allowing for minimum interference between the inner space and the structure. Part of the façade is made of ETFE translucent inflated cushions to help regulate the inside temperature. The irregular bracing of the façade is used to create a dynamic animation of the façade, well suited to the destination of this media-devoted building. ■

SWEDEN Swedbank Stadion, Malmö

■ Simplicity is at once evident in this 21 000 seats stadium, one of the largest sports complex in Northern Europe. Exposed steel trusses emphasise the modern gothic architectural expression, with sharp angles and black clad exterior façades to create a straight forward perception. The flat surfaces of the inside roof are designed to amplify the noise reflection from the ceiling. Frames have been fabricated in a maximum of three parts in the factory to minimize transportation cost and provide a fast erection. The result is a cost effective steel construction beside a strong architectural expression. ■

■ This large stadium built in a dense urban area is designed to be a living place at any time of the year. Partially sunk in the ground, the stadium is visible only through its steel roof which offers a cover for 33 000 spectators. The circular cantilevered roof seems to float as an atoll above the seats, only supported by a pairs of dynamic columns tilted outwards. The complex structure of the roof and the delicate erection process on the site are no longer visible in the final result, which stands as a free standing canopy, perfectly integrated in the surrounding cityscape. ■

TURKEY Greengrocers and fishmongers market, Bursa

■ This spectacular covered market set in a beautifully landscaped hilltop of the famous Silk Road is composed of two buildings. The central open air courtyard of the greengrocer market is enclosed by oval shaped covered gallery. The fishmonger market is a smaller building set apart. The design of both markets maintains the idea of the grand bazaars, thus connecting the new buildings to the long-standing cultural traditions of Central Asia. But at the same time the steel spanned arched roof provide fully modern qualities such as space, comfort, light and ventilation. ■

UNITED KINGDOM Wimbledon Centre Court, Wimbledon

■ The famous Centre court in Wimbledon tennis stadium is considerably improving its facilities through a heavy refurbishment. Apart from the rebuilding of the East stand, the major improvement is the construction of a moving roof that will provide full rain cover during the championships. Despite its complexity, the roof was erected with a minimum of disruption. Resting on the very stiff peripheral main frame of the roof, the moving trusses weighting altogether 1100 tonnes supporting a folding fabric demonstrate the versatility of steel in providing elegant an efficient solutions to a complex problem, and thus enhancing the potential of this arena. ■
