Dear Friends,

Ambition–it can be a very good thing and a very bad thing. In the gospel today we hear about the ambition of the Apostles. They want something of Jesus, and here’s our year’s theme question again: Jesus asks them, “What do you wish me to do for you?” They wanted to sit at his right and left hand when he comes into his “kingdom”, as they saw it. They were ambitious for themselves, and Jesus quickly assures them that they don’t understand anything of his Kingdom. “You do not know what you are asking.” He asks, “Can you drink the cup that I drink or be “Our lesson for baptized with the baptism with which I baptized?” They say, “We can!” They today is that we am really didn’t understand the cost of disciuse our gifts, pleship. They did wind up drinking of the cup and experienced the baptism of Jesus, talents, and they all gave their lives for the Kingdom treasure, for the as martyrs. They came to understand and so service of others.” must we, that we cannot just be ambitious for ourselves, but rather for the Kingdom of God. Jesus took the moment to teach them and us that we cannot use our ambition to lord it over others, to make it “felt.” He says, “It shall not be so among you.” Jesus teaches that our greatness must be expressed in service, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Our lesson for today is that we use our gifts, talents, and treasure, for the service of others. Otherwise we run the risk, like the rich young man from last Sunday’s gospel, of not getting into the Kingdom, much less assuming positions of power in it. That is the great lesson for us. Today we mark our annual Stewardship of Treasure Sunday. We are asked to consider if it’s all about us, if we use our gifts in a proportionate way, as a good steward, serving the needs of others and the Kingdom of God? That is the note and point of having every good thing– using them for the sake of the Kingdom. Tithing I think is a prerequisite, a practical real way, of keeping ambition and its shadow side in perspective, of maintaining our priorities, and living out the teaching of Jesus we hear today. I commend to you our annual Stewardship of Treasure appeal as a way of making and renewing your commitment to follow Jesus into the Kingdom, of being a real disciple, a mature disciple, not immature and ambitious for ourselves as were the Apostles in today’s gospel. We are ambitious for the Kingdom of God–in fact passionate about it! THANK YOU! and God Bless you,

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2006 Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many. — Isaiah 53:11b

Hispanic Heritage Month and Music As a sign of hospitality towards the increasing number of Spanish speaking people who join us for liturgy, and to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we use more Spanish and English acclamations and songs at liturgy during the month of October. For several years now we have been singing the Honduras Alleluia and the Misa de las Américas which alternate between the two languages. We have also used “Open Wide the Doors / Abre Bien las Puertas” and soon we learn “We Will Be the Light / Seremos la luz” by John Angotti.

Spanish & English Worship Aid A worship aid is available with all the readings and mass parts in both English and Spanish. Copies will be placed on the credenza next to the weekend song sheets during the months of October and November. Call the Liturgy Office if you would like to pick up a copy during the week..

Missionary Prayer God and Father of us all, you sent your Son to carry out your mission of redeeming the world. Today, many still have not heard his message of truth and love. Our world is torn by war and conflict, by poverty and injustice. Let the light of your Gospel of love so shine in the world that it may be transformed into a worthy home for all your children of every race and country. Bless all missionaries throughout the world that their work may bear fruit. Together with them, may we too share in the missionary work of the whole Church that your Kingdom of justice, love and peace may come in all hearts and in all nations. We make our prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen. From the Camboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. www.camboni.org

C.A.R.E. CORNER Where does the Pope get the authority to shepherd the faith lives of 1 billion Catholics? Let’s go back to the beginning of the papacy. Jesus called 12 disciples to follow Him, including Peter. He taught them what He wanted them to know, both through His words and by His actions. They in turn took these teachings and actions into area communities in order to spread the “Good News” they had been given by God. These disciples in turn apprenticed more disciples (students, learners) to do the same. This process was critical for the perpetuation of this faith, especially after Jesus’ death.

This is an eight week video/ discussion series designed to help parents guide children safely and productively into adulthood. “It has been a year of recovering from the devastation that was Katrina and it will be more years to complete the job. It is our call as members of the St. Thomas family to keep the spirit alive in our brothers and sisters by replenishing and renewing their hope in what lies ahead.” Ed Augustine’s reflection upon his return from St. Thomas – Long Beach.

Continuing with their mission, the St. Thomas Katrina Task Force is planning another trip to Long Beach, Mississippi in November. A final date will be set depending on the availability of volunteers. Tentative dates are November 5 through 11 or November12 through 18. There are a variety of work opportunities, some of a technical nature and others of a support or non – technical nature. Choose Life Advocates of embryonic stem cell research often use diabetes as an example of a disease that their unethical research will cure some day. California has even set aside taxpayer money to fund this immoral medical approach. How ironic, then, that in California the LaJolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology is set to begin a vaccine-based treatment of Type 1 diabetes in humans before the end of the year. This is yet another example of how medical research is coming up with ethical treatments of devastating diseases at a time when embryonic stem cell research has yet to produce any usable results.

Pastoral Care Parish Nurse Notes: Flu Vaccine Clinic Planned “Flu” season is fast approaching. It is important to note, the flu virus thrives in public areas and the typical work environment. The viruses are spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Influenza causes fever, sore throat, chills, cough, headache, and muscle aches. Influenza vaccine can prevent influenza. Influenza viruses change often; therefore, the vaccine is updated every year. Protection develops about two weeks after getting the vaccine and may last up to a year. The best time to get flu vaccine is in October or November. The flu season can peak anywhere from December through March, but most often peaks in February. So getting the vaccine in the Fall, even later, can be beneficial in most years. St. Thomas the Apostle will hold a Parish Flu Vaccine Clinic in association with the Community Nursing Service (cns) on: Saturday, October 28, 2006 Time: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Place: St. Thomas Gym The cost of the flu shot is $25 with a cash or check payment. Community Nursing (cns) will accept and bill Medicare (Part B) insurance for payment, for those who carry Medicare Health Insurance. No other insurances will be billed. If your are unable to attend the Saturday, October 28 Flu Clinic, the Visiting Nurse Association (vna) Flu Clinics are posted on several bulletin boards throughout the Church. Call Audrey or Felicia, 333-8980 X104 with questions or concerns.

Elizabeth Ministry Sunday, November 5 at 3 pm is the Tree of Lights Mass at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. STEP Thank You On behalf of All Saints Catholic Academy and the parishes of St. Margaret Mary, St. Elizabeth Seton, Holy Spirit, SS. Peter and Paul, and St. Thomas the Apostle, we would like to thank each of you who participated in, and supported the annual Steps Toward Eliminating Poverty Event On October 8, 2006. Over 400 hundred members of our Naperville parishes walked and prayed in solidarity, to stand up for and restore dignity to our suffering brothers and sisters, across the globe, who are dying from preventable causes of poverty. An even greater number of you who could not be there, showed your love and support by giving generous donations to Catholic Relief Services who make incredible differences in the lives of our vulnerable. It was a joy to see each of you open your heart and be the hands and feet of Jesus, as well as, his voice in speaking up for those who are neglected, rebuked, and forgotten. We also want to extend a special thank you to Sandra Renehan, principal of All Saints Catholic Academy, for hosting the event at her school; Robert Frazier and Van Culberson for providing music and technical support; Rachael Rosales for a spiritual and heart-felt part in the prayer service, and Tom Dart for his motivational witness talk at our masses. Thank you, Jim Melton, for being such a great leader and an inspiration to us all. Thank you, Father Joel, in your divine wisdom and presence, for giving us an outstanding passionate homily on what it means to love our neighbor! We are deeply grateful to all of you who helped us plant God's seeds and made this a very successful event.
