Pray For Vocations The act of forgiveness is one of the highest priorities of the Priest and Religious. Today’ s Gospel explains that forgiveness is the greatest sign of love, and the priest and religious are supposed to express this love of God to the Catholic faithful. Through the Sacrament of Confession, the priest exercises this love in the most beautiful way. Are you willing to give Christ’s love a chance in your life and the lives of the people of the Archdiocese? You may have a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Pray for forgiveness, receive the graces of the Sacrament of Confession and contact the vocation office at 973.497.4365 or email [email protected].

THINGS ARE HOPPING IN CONGRESS!

Federal Funding for Abstinence Education In Jeopardy

House Defeats Cloning Bill On June 6, the U.S. House of Representatives soundly defeated the Human Cloning Prohibition Act (H.R. 2560), 204-yes, 213-no, 15-not voting (Roll Call 439). The measure was presented to the House under Suspension of the Rules, this means no amendments are allowed, debate is limited to 20 minutes on either side, and a two-thirds vote is required for passage. H.R. 2560 fell 74 votes short of the two-thirds mark, failing to receive even a majority. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) had introduced H.R. 2560 just the evening before the vote. Even though called the Human Cloning Prohibition Act, the bill places no limits on human cloning. What the bill prohibits is the implantation of a human clone into a woman’s uterus or its functional equivalent. No limits whatsoever are placed on cloning humans, who can then be killed for their embryonic stem cells or used for other experimental purposes. As Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) stated during the debate, "Are we really trying to say to the American people we want to make the human embryo the lab rat of the 21st century?" (Congressional Record, 6/6/07, H6040). House Passes ESC Funding Bill, But Still Not Veto Proof On June 7, the House took up the Senate-passed Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, S. 5, and, as expected, passed the measure, 247-yes, 176-no, 10-not voting (Roll Call 443). No amendments were allowed on S. 5. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) offered the motion to recommit to committee with instruction to support research on alternative pluripotent stem cell research. The motion to recommit failed, 180-yes, 242-no, 10-not voting (Roll Call 442). The vote on final passage is comparable to the vote in January when the House passed its own version of this bill (H.R. 3). Then the vote was 253-yes, 174-no, 8-not voting (Roll Call 20). From then to now, no Members switched from opposition to support or from support to opposition. The prospects for upholding a presidential veto remain solid. President Bush, in Germany, stated "If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers would for the first time in our history be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. Crossing that line would be a grave mistake. For that reason, I will veto the billed passed today." Thanks to everyone … …for their good work on the cloning and embryonic stem cell bills. All votes are already listed on the Library of Congress web site, thomas.loc.gov. Please check how your Representative voted. Please be sure to thank those Members who voted in support of the pro-life position.

A major federal program funding abstinence education for teenagers will expire at the end of June unless Congress acts to extend it. Leading congressional Democrats say they will let the program lapse. This is the first Congress in many years to place abstinence programs in serious danger. Please tell members of Congress to reauthorize the abstinence education program in Title V of the Social Security Act. This message is especially needed for members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the program see list of members at… http://energycommerce.house.gov/membios/110fullmship.shtml
