Second Homily Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, I hope that you were generous in today’s Second Collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Our elderly Catholic Sisters, Brothers and Religious Order Priests need your help. Many served for years in Catholic schools, hospitals and parishes—often for little or no pay. Think of all the nuns who taught you years ago! Your gift to the Retirement Fund provides financing for medications, nursing care and more. Many of them have no or very little Social Security Benefits. As always, thank you for your generosity. Dynamic Catholic wants to give you your Best Advent ever and the best Christmas—because you have prepared for it in a unique way. You can receive daily emails with short inspirational videos from Matthew Kelly and Dr. Allen Hung, practical tips to incorporate into your everyday life, and personal stories from Dynamic Catholic team members. Sign up at https://dynamiccatholic.com/best-advent-ever. As we continue our Advent journey, we need to reflect on the words of Pope Francis about the joy of Advent and Christmas. Pope Francis has summed up the heart of Christian joy in these simple words, “Pray, give thanks, help others!” How joyful have you been lately during this hectic time of all of the preparations for Christmas? How joy-filled have you been to others—especially your family and friends? We welcomed back our guest homilist—Deacon Bill Johnson—for today’s 9:30 and 11:15 Masses. Hopefully, you listened to his heartfelt, inspirational homily continuing our Advent journey. He was very impressed with his visits here. He also has provided another thought-provoking handout which was available at all exits. Each year, our Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to join Catholics worldwide in praying for this intention. Pope Francis’ December Prayer Intention is “that the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations.” Please keep this intention in your Advent prayers. On September 29, 2015, Cardinal Blase Cupich announced the new initiative—”Renew My Church.” It is a total Archdiocesan effort to revitalize the Church of the Archdiocese of Chicago and to also revitalize the Parishes and the Ministries of those Parishes. The focus is that we are all called by Christ to make disciples, to build communities and to inspire witness. These are the three major goals as spoken by Cardinal Cupich. So, it is about a structural renewal and a Ministerial renewal to focus primarily on Evangelization and Formation. As I shared with you last week, the Pastors and the Associates—of our specific grouping of the four Parishes of St. Theresa, St. Colette, Mission San Juan Diego and St. Thomas of Villanova—attended this past week the first phase of “Renew My Church.” Our three day seminar was the Pastoral Leadership Program. It was an opportunity for us to gather to prepare to lead our Parishes through the Discernment Phase of “RMC.” You will read right here more info on our “RMC” in the weeks and months ahead as we work to better make Christ present. Your Pastor,

Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela

Parish News Dear Friends, We are fortunate to have many good friends at St. Angela School—those who contribute to our financial well-being, those who volunteer to help with the day to day school opera ons and those who contribute directly to the children. We could not succeed without a good supply of each kind! Your dona on of the wonderful coats for our scholars came at the perfect me—an early Christmas gi . As you know, many of the boys and girls come from homes where it is a struggle to keep growing children in warm clothes that fit. It is fun to watch the children exclaim over anything new—what a treat it was to distribute the coats! Our classrooms and hallways are beginning to fill with Christmas music as the children prepare for the holidays. They’ll be here, as you know, before most of us are ready for it. Thank you again for thinking of us. May God bless you and your family with a joyous Christmas and peace and good health in the New Year. Sincerely,

Kurt Wittenberg Principal

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REPORTS From: Mary Strybel, CRE The path of faith isn’t easy. Full of twists, and turns, it can leave us discouraged and perplexed. How important it is to have catechists and teachers along the way! A teacher in faith for whom I’m immensely grateful was my Religious Educa on nun. She wore a full habit, and I must admit that more than once I found myself staring at her habit, and long beads instead of paying a en on to the lesson. She would walk up and down the aisles with her beau ful black habit moving back and forth, back and forth. For me she was “Grace in mo on.” She would explain that Advent was a me of wai ng. Full of an cipa on and joy. We would make our Advent chains, a aching one slip of paper to the next, using paste. Do you remember paste? Once again I see sister walking back and forth, back and forth up and down the aisles, making sure that we were not ea ng paste just gluing with it. She was kind, gentle, and so spoken. The only me I remember her raising her voice was when Nick C. fell over while pping his desk chair just a li le too far back. She picked him up by his ears, set the chair upright, placed him back on it, and said “that be er not happen again young man” with a firm but kind voice. My Advent prayer for our wonderful catechists and school teachers, is that someday the children that they teach will remember them with the same love, and kindness that I s ll feel for Sister Mary Margaret. God Bless You and Yours,

Mary 7

Advent Season ON WAITING

Reconciliation Opportunities During Advent, take the me to prepare your heart for the birth of Our Lord. You can receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia on on: ♦

Saturday, December 16 from 8:30am—9:30am ♦ Monday, December 18 at 7:00pm Cut out and bring with you to confession, if needed.

ACT OF CONTRITION Tradi onal O my God, I am hear ly sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen. Contemporary O my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I fully intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Amen.

Per Emerson, “There is a difference between the wai ng of the prophet and the standing s ll of the fool.” Advent emphasizes the former. Generally speaking, though, we’re an impa ent people. We have quick oats, one-minute eggs, instant mashed potatoes! But consider Penn: “Pa ence and Diligence, like Faith, move mountains.” Consider Lincoln: “A man watches his pear tree day a er day, impa ent for the ripening of the fruit. Let him a empt to force the ripening…and he may spoil both fruit and tree. But let him pa ently wait, and the ripe pear at length falls into his lap.” Consider Ka a: “Perhaps this quiet yet unquiet wai ng is the harbinger of grace, or perhaps it is grace itself.” OK, but tell that to the guys behind my wife and me in line for the Coors Brewery tour in Golden, CO. Gail and I spent some days in Denver a few weeks back visi ng friends and family, and we drove over to Golden one day for the tour. As a food technologist, I’ve been in a lot of food plants over the years, and I was eager to go through a beer plant. Hence, I was OK in learning when we arrived a er lunch that we’d be wai ng up to an hour. Standing in queue, Gail and I wondered how many people were there for the beerprocessing knowledge or just for the three free eight-ounce samples that we heard were being served up in the tas ng room at the end of the tour. The wait became even longer when the tour lady told us that the plant had been evacuated. She said this 10

didn’t happen o en, but o en enough for her to know that the tours, now suspended, should begin again later on. Gail and I said we’d give it un l 3:00, and the tours resumed around 2:50. Less than five minutes a er this was announced, a guy behind us told a newcomer to the line of the delay, adding that the tours were supposed to be resuming, but that this was announced twenty minutes ago. That’s when Gail figured the guy and his buddies were just in it for the beers. As she put it, “When you’re really anxious to get somewhere, even a short amount of me can seem like an eternity!” Hmmmm… Per today’s second reading, “Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day.” The author here is referencing the “scoffers,” the unbelievers who hold that there will be no second coming of Jesus (“Where is the promise of his coming? From the me when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has remained as it was from the beginning of crea ons”). Maybe, but Advent over all reminds us to con nue wai ng on the Lord. Isaiah specifically reminds us to prepare his way--to make straight his paths--and the Bap zer reminds us that one migh er than he is on his way. “Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day.” “When you’re really anxious to get somewhere, even a short amount of me can seem like an eternity!” Like I said. Hmmmm… Copyright 2017 by John B. Reynolds

IN SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY Lord, bless the men and women of our military as they answer the call to serve our na on and defend our freedom. Protect and heal them-- body, soul, mind and spirit--especially those in harm's way. Most of all let them know your love; that you are with them, and that you will never forsake or abandon them. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen. U.S. Jest On Chrystusem, tj. oczekiwanym Mesjaszem.
