pastor’s note A week ago, I saw a post on Facebook that went something like this, “I’ve been making resolutions to become fit and healthy since 1984. I’m pretty sure 2017 is going to be successful for me.” I loved it. At some level we all relate to it. Luckily, fitness has never really been my issue, but I have made and broken many resolutions in the past. What will this year be like?

and able to delay gratification. In order to have a healthy financial life that balances earning with spending, and saving with giving, one must be able to delay gratification. In order to raise children to become the best-version of-themselves, one must be willing to delay gratification. Great marriages are built on individual and mutual delayed gratification. Great careers are built little by little over time, and require doing the hard yards early and delaying gratification. Self-denial is essential to spiritual growth. In order to become our best self we must deny our lesser self. We deny our false self to find our true self.”

As pastor of St. Pius X Parish, I pause as I think back on all the challenges of 2016, but I also thank God for how we have gone through the challenges in a formative way. I truly see us rising from the struggles in a beautiful and mission centered way. I have been held up in prayer, encouraged by the faithful, and touched by the pastoral work continuing to be done every day.

As a parish we have had to delay gratification. We have had to pull back, cut back, make adjustments, and go deeper. What has happened as a result, is people have stepped up to help: the Women’s Club, the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, school parents, individual parishioners, staff members have all answered the call. Thank you!

Towards the beginning of the year, the School Advisory Council suggested that we take a closer look at the mission of the school by putting out a survey to the parents. Initially, I wasn’t too excited by the idea. However, I figured as long as SAC was going to compile the information, we may very well find areas where we can improve. The results came in and I am grateful for their efforts. By looking over the results, I was able to see some areas where just a little extra attention on my part could make a difference and help make our school a little better, a little healthier.

One of the complaints I have heard over the past couple of years, is that we have been losing our sense of community. Our response to the challenges of 2016, has begun to pull the community back together. We are building something better, something healthier, and may I say holier. Blessings on us all in 2017. With God’s Grace, Fr. Sean Weeks Pastor

So much of 2016 has been a discovery of how we can become a little better, a little healthier, and may I say, a little holier. We have worked hard for many years expanding our campus, making sure it looks great, and focusing on ways to pay for it all. In some ways, I think it became a distraction from the more important work, to grow in holiness. We all want to succeed. But to succeed, we need to quit focusing on the exteriors, and go deeper. We need to continue to allow ourselves to go within. Matthew Kelly points out in Resisting Happiness, “One of the things I love about Catholicism is that it truly does bridge heaven and earth—not just in a theological way, but in a real and practical way. The simple habit of self-denial is a spiritual habit, but it has tremendous implications for our worldly affairs. Self-denial leads to the immensely practical skill of delaying gratification. The ability to delay gratification is intimately linked with success. You cannot succeed at anything unless you are willing
