II. Ecumenical Hymn Festival: Thursday, January 19th, 6:00 p.m., with the Bishop, here at the Cathedral! We will welcome our sister parishes as well as our neighbors from the Christian Churches in our area. This Festival takes place during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18th —25th, which is when the Church Celebrates the Conversion of St. Paul. The theme this year is “Reconciliation—the Love of Christ Compels Us.” (2 Cor 5:14-20). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years— in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity. By annually observing the WPCU, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one."

III. Epiphany Vespers and the Epiphany International Potluck: Special thank you to Lupe Ellis for commandingly Coordinating this Celebration and Teresa Brown, our Pastoral Council liaison and all the helpers who made this a special event! A special thank you also to our Magi/Three Kings: Landon, Luke, and Kolbe Reffitt. CONGRATULATIONS to the Nathan Reffitt family as they were the winners of the door prize, a trip to Florida during Spring Break. What a treat for such a deserving family— send us a postcard! Thank you to everyone who came out and participated!

IV. Opportunities for Life: The Kentucky Bishops' 24-7 Hotline for women experiencing a difficult or unwanted pregnancy—it reminds people of the alternatives to abortion. This hotline has been in service for over 20 years and has been a great and blessed success in saving the lives of the unborn. When you donate to Opportunities for Life, you are saving lives. One phone call from a woman near despair is the difference between life and death. For more information, please visit www.opportunitiesforlife.org. V. Baby bottles for Birthright: Next weekend, January 21st/22nd, we will support our local Birthright by picking up a baby bottle when you leave after Mass. Please place your donation in the baby bottle and return it to the parish office during the week, or in designated areas in church the following weekend—January 28/29th. Many thanks to Kate Abney for coordinating this vital event in and through the social concerns committee of the Parish. Birthright “A Friend is Waiting” (birthright.org) offers an alternative to women considering an abortion. January 22, 1973, a day “which will live in infamy,” must be a day in which we re-double our efforts and be relentless in educating and communicating reconciliation for women as well as men. The Holy Father and the Bishops call us to pray for healing for all those who have been part of an abortion. Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat is a wonderful place to begin the healing process. There are retreats several times a year. For more information visit HopeAfterAbortionKY.com or call Debbie 270/570-4717 or Jennifer at 931/242-5506. VI. Presbyteral Convocation: January 16-19th: Bishop Medley gathers with the priests of the Diocese each year at St. Meinrad for continued education, retreat, state of the diocese address, etc. This year our topic is death and dying: how to better implement the ritual for funerals— The Mass of Christian burial. Please pray for Bishop Medley, myself, Fr. Jamie, and the priest of the diocese of Owensboro. Corey Bruns, our seminary intern will also be part of this continuing education. VII. No Mass at the Cathedral on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week. Be aware of the Mass schedule at the Carmel Home at 6:55 a.m. each morning. Mass is also available at 7:00 a.m. at the Passionist Monastery. In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

Lent/Easter Liturgy Planning Meeting YOU ARE INVITED to join a small group of parishioners to discuss plans for the upcoming seasons of Lent & Easter. Come and offer your input on Monday, January 23rd at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Office Conference Room so that our upcoming liturgies are truly lifegiving and prayerful celebrations.

Faith Enrichment Opportunity All are invited on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. or Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Center for a JOURNEY with Bishop Robert Barron. Come learn and unclock the truth behind the Catholic Church’s most influential people. We will look at “Catholicism: Pivotal Players,” a multi-part film series that celebrates a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church, but changed the course of civilization. This series will be lead by Corey Bruns, our Seminarian. It begins Sunday, January 29th, at 10:00 a.m.; ending on Sunday, February 19th and also, beginning Monday, January 30th, at 7:00 p.m.; ending on February 27th. Please see “The Week Ahead” in each bulletin for dates.

Faith Formation News! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: There are several people in our community asking questions about being Catholic. Please continue to pray for all who are seeking a deeper understanding of faith and particularly of our Catholic faith. Maybe you know someone who would also be interested in learning about our faith. Reach out to them with a heart of compassion and assure them that inquiring does not require a lifetime commitment. RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parish Media Center. On Jan. 18th the topic will be “Christian Moral Living and the Dignity of Human Life.” Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270/8528424, or [email protected]. Adult Faith Formation Opportunity: Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church's most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. Corey Bruns will present aspects of this series on Sunday mornings at 10:00 (January 29, February 5, 12, 19) and repeated on Monday evenings at 7:00 (January 30, February 6, 20, 27) in the Community Center.

Prayer for Those in Sacramental Formation: As is our tradition at the Cathedral, we have the names of our younger parishioners who are preparing for sacraments on prayer papers at all the entrances today. Please take a name of one of these young people and remember to pray for him or her throughout the coming months.

YOUTH GROUP NEWS!

DISCIPLESHIP

JOIN US FOR OUR YOUTH GROUP KICK-OFF THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 15TH 2017 FROM 6-8PM!!

Discipleship: A Way of Life All Year Through By now, most of the Christmas trees, Nativity displays, and inflatable lawn decorations have been taken down. The hectic pace of gift-giving and celebrations has given way to a more ‘normal’ routine. It is wonderful to know that we open our hearts to support various charities and outreach programs during Advent and Christmas. This extra giving and sharing at the holidays is certainly important, but our efforts as disciples of Christ need to continue year round. Living life as a Christian steward means sharing our treasure, offering our talents in service, and making time for regular prayer all year through. When we recognize, gratefully receive, carefully tend, and generously share a portion of our God-given gifts, we deepen our relationship with the Lord and support our parish and greater community. We continue to reach out to the less fortunate, whose needs continue long after the Christmas season is over.

Only you can divide your property as you want it divided. A bequest to your Church can be a living memorial to the nobility of your life. It is also exempt from estate and inheritance taxes and reduces the amount of the estate to be taxed. Have an attorney provide the advice you might need to prepare such a request. Our legal title is St. Stephen Cathedral Parish of Owensboro, Kentucky Inc.
