“Doubt is the skeleton in the closet of faith, and I know no better way to treat a skeleton than to bring it into the open and expose it for what it is; not something to hide or fear, but a hard structure on which living tissue may grow.” Philip Yancey, Reaching for the Invisible God

† PASTOR’S CORNER † I. Owensboro Symphony Orchestra will grace us with their presence at St. Stephen Cathedral on Sunday, April 19, at 4:00PM. Along with every SSC parishioner, our Diocesan Event Welcomers will extend hospitality to our guests. Invite your friends and neighbors! Everyone is welcome! II. Thanks to all those who gave back to the Church in a very hands-on, concrete way. A special thanks to Ron Bornander, Parish Pastoral Council liaison to Buildings and Grounds, for organizing and making this event happen. (Watch for next week’s Litany of Thanks for all the names.) IV. Watering our Church Flowers: Thanks to Dora Thompson and Mary Horn for their timely watering of our flowers in church. In deference to the health of our flowers, I ask that this important and essential task be left to Dora and Mary alone! WORD OF LIFE “Today, capital punishment is unacceptable, however serious the condemned’s crime may have been. It is an offence to the inviolability of life and to the dignity of the human person which contradicts God’s plan for man and for society and his merciful justice, and it fails to conform to any just purpose of punishment. It does not render justice to the victims, but rather foments revenge. “For a constitutional State, the death penalty represents a failure, because it obliges the State to kill in the name of justice. Dostoyevsky wrote: ‘To kill a murderer is a punishment incomparably worse than the crime itself. Murder by legal sentence is immeasurably more terrible than murder by a criminal.’ Justice is never reached by killing a human being.” Pope Francis, “Letter,” March 20, 2015 Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service

YOUTH GROUP

We continue our prayers for our newly initiated members, the neophytes, as they grow in their understanding of the Mysteries of Faith. Please keep them in prayer. Perhaps you know someone who has expressed interest in you as a Catholic. Invite them to come and learn more about Catholicism. There is an open-door to all who are casually curious, seriously seeking or firmly committed to becoming Catholic. Now is an excellent time to inquire. Our RCIA process is a year-round experience. It does not have a beginning or ending date, like a school year calendar. RCIA meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00PM in the parish Media Center. On April 22, Rob Abney will present the topic “The Laity: Called to Build God’s Kingdom.” Come share your faith and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424, or donna.murphy@ pastoral.org. CELEBRATION OF FIRST EUCHARIST Seventeen young members of our faith community are in the final stages of preparation for receiving their First Holy Communion on Sunday, April 26, at the 11:00AM Mass. Please remember them in your prayers! Ashlynn Carman Dustin Gonzalez Evan Hurm Ashton Millay Peter Palmer Sofia Sorley

MAY PROCESSION AND CORONATION OF MARY Our May procession will follow the 9:00AM Mass on Sunday, May 3. Those not attending the 9:00AM Mass can join us near the grotto at 10:00AM. For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424, or [email protected] or Kathryn Crowe, 270-313-0245.

All the youth will gather this Sunday, April 19, at 6:00PM, at the Youth House. Thanks to all those who came and participated in our Youth Group last week. Each of you have a responsibility to make it active and on-going. Your presence is very important. Take initiative to call some of your friends and bring them, too. Let us continue to work together. “I have great expectations of you, young people. Bring to your encounter with Jesus, hidden in the Eucharist, all the enthusiasm of your age, all your hopes, all your desire to love.” St. John Paul II

Looking forward to seeing you all. Let us continue to grow in our relationship with our Lord. God bless you all. Fr. Suneesh

2015 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL A successful Vacation Bible School program depends on good volunteers. Volunteers are needed within the coming weeks to plan for this year’s Vacation Bible School. We will have a planning meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at 6:30PM in the Media Center. If you are interested in this fun, faith-filled week, please contact Donna Murphy, 270/852-8424 or donna.murphy@ pastoral.org. INTERESTED IN CATHOLIC MEDIA CREATIONS? Do you know a saint? Can you get a witness? Seriously, if you know of someone who is a heroic witness, send an email to [email protected]. Visit lolekproductions.com.

“JESUS WAS MADE KNOWN TO THEM” Jesus was recognized by the disciples in the breaking of the bread. Two thousand years later, Jesus continues to be present to us in the Eucharist. God is calling young men to bring that great gift of the Eucharist to the world in the sacramental priesthood. If you think God is calling you to serve him as a Catholic Priest, contact the Vocations Office: jason.mcclure@ pastoral.org or www.owensborovocations.com. EASTER FLOWER OFFERINGS We thank all of our donors for this expression of faith and love. Names recently submitted are: Archie and Sarah Benah Clark, Sr.; Herbert and Izetta Howard, “Special Friend”, and “Anonymous.” HAVING FAITH “We too often forget that faith is a matter of questioning and struggle before it becomes one of solitude and peace. You have to doubt and reject everything else in order to believe firmly in Christ, and after you have begun to believe, your faith itself must be tested and purified.” Thomas Merton (1915 – 1968)

DIOCESE OF OWENSBORO PASTORAL PLAN In preparation for a Diocese of Owensboro Pastoral Plan, Bishop Medley seeks your input and invites your participation at the first of three rounds of Broad Consultation Sessions to be held across the diocese. Your input will be conveyed to Bishop Medley in a report submitted by the Steering Committee at the conclusion of all consultation sessions. The First Round of Broad Consultation Sessions held in Owensboro will be Tuesday, April 21, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 6:00-8:00PM.

“Lord, stay with us.” “These words were spoken for the first time by the disciples of Emmaus. Subsequently in the course of the centuries they have been spoken, an infinite number of times, by the lips of so many of Your disciples, O Christ. “I speak the same words today. I speak them to invite You, Christ, in Your Eucharistic presence, to accept the daily adoration continuing through the entire day in our chapels. “Stay with us and stay, from now on, every day, according to the desire of my heart. Stay! That we may meet You in the prayer of adoration and thanksgiving, in the prayer of expiation and petition, to which all those who visit are invited.

“Stay! That Your presence in this temple may be incessantly reconfirmed, and that all those who enter here may become aware that it is Your house, ‘the dwelling of God…with men,’ and, visiting, may find in it the very source of life and holiness that gushes from Your Eucharistic heart.”

A VOCATION VISTA We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our questions…To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity and our very existence. Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service
