THE KING JAMES BIBLE ―The King James Bible, published exactly 400 years ago in 1611, has sold more copies than any other in the English language and is regarded by many as the finest book ever written in English. To compare modern translations with the KJB is unfair because one would not be comparing like with like. If you want a translation of the Bible that has been produced with all the tools of modern scholarship for study then there are numerous versions available. I believe, however, that there is a clash of basic assumptions about the reading of scripture in church services. The modern translations would be best if people came to Church to study the Bible but the reality is that most people don‘t come for that reason, they come to worship. So if you want a Bible that was produced for that purpose, if you want a Bible translated with rigour, clarity and grandeur, authoritatively rooted in the past, if you want a version that for four centuries has been chosen by English people and which has inspired them to pursue the true, the good and the beautiful, if you want a version that can be appropriated and endlessly repeated until it provides the furniture of the mind and etches itself on the soul, then the KJB is supreme. This book was written in our mother tongue in its early modern splendour and it has influenced the English language more than any other, even Shakespeare. Even some of the most militant atheists are united with fundamentalist Christians, every professor of English and millions of others in its defence. When life deals its hardest blows one does not want ideas and information one instinctively turns to what is known by heart, in the heart. What is not memorable cannot be ‗fed upon in the heart by faith‘. Conveying the mystery of the Divine and unfathomable nature of God is the greatest of all challenges to language of all kinds. Ultimately it is what T.S.Eliot described as: “A raid on the inarticulate, with shabby equipment always deteriorating”. “Words strain, crack and sometimes break, under the burden, under the tension, slip, slide, perish, decay with imprecision, will not stay in place” “Words, after speech, reach into the silence, only by the form, the pattern can words or music reach the stillness”. There we have it, it is that music running through the words that are deep and rich in meaning. For four centuries the form and pattern of the KJB has, in churches throughout the world, inspired insight, creative activity and empathetic feeling. Long exposure to that slow majestic music has led generations into a vision of supreme beauty in which something of the ultimate character of being itself is disclosed. Surely it is the glory of the Church of England and her greatest treasure.‖ Christopher Jobson. Part of his address delivered at Battlefield Church on July 24th 2011

The Children’s Society October is the official month for the opening and counting of our Children‘s Society boxes so I am getting this notice in the September magazine to remind you to bring your boxes to church and leave them in the Vestry. They will be put in the safe until I can collect them. Once the contents have been counted, I will put the boxes at the back of the church for you to collect. If you are unable to bring your box to church, I will collect and return it to your home. Thank you all for continuing to support, so generously, this very worth while cause. If anyone would like to consider having a box please do contact me, either at church or at home. Sue Collins Tel. 01948 667845

CHURCHES TOGETHER
BIBLE STUDY GROUP
At our last meeting Father Gregory Downing was re-elected to serve as Chairman, Mr. Mike Nimmo was appointed Vice Chair, and Pauline Stokes agreed to serve as Secretary for another year. Nicki Young who is Shropshire Council‘s Community Action Officer, came to share her experience in fund raising, advised us on various options available when applying for Grants for our church buildings. We certainly need all the help we can get! Our Coffee Morning was held outside the Civic Centre on Sat, 27th August. As has become our custom there was no charge for coffee and biscuits – it was a free morning! And Judy Bellingham manned the Fairtrade Stall, The weather held fair for the morning, if a bit chilly – but at least the rain held off.
After our summer break we look forward to meeting on Wednesday 7th September at 2 pm in the Church Office, when we will be choosing which book we would like to study during the next few weeks. Our numbers remain steady, up to 13, however, should you be interested in joining us, you will be most welcome – it is interesting, fun, and we finish the afternoon off with coffee and biscuits. The late Mona Lewis was a very faithful member of our study group, and she used to bring her King James Bible with her, which she dearly loved, and she would have agreed whole heartedly with Christopher Jobson‘s piece on the KJB. However, there are so many editions available today, and we, too, all seem to have our own favourite version of the Bible - But all contain the same message!!
The Annual Boat Rally held on the Whitchurch Arm of the Canal takes place on Saturday & Sunday 17th /18th September. As well as being able to admire the Boats, there will be various stalls, music, and a dog show! At 3 pm on the Sunday, there will be ‗Songs of Praise‘ on the site, hosted by Churches Together. We have many visitors to our church who are holidaying on the Canal – well, we can return the compliment, by visiting them! Why not come too, and join in ‗Songs of Praise‘
HARVEST – 2nd October Decorating of the church will take place from 9 am onwards on Saturday 1st October. Gifts of flowers, greenery, fruit and vegetables for this purpose will be much appreciated – if you would like to be involved in some way, you will be most welcome ! Harvest gifts brought to the Services on Sunday will be given once again to Stonham in their effort to support the many young, homeless, and vulnerable people in our area, and who also provide Safe Houses for victims of domestic abuse.

CHRISTMAS FAIR Although it is only September, plans are in hand for our Christmas Fair, which takes place on Sat 19th Nov in the Civic Centre between 10 am & 12:30 pm. Please start collecting goods for the stalls – There will be a box in church each week after Harvest, to bring your items for the stalls. This is our major fund raising event of the year for our Fabric Fund, so it is important we have a successful sale. (There is a rumour that Father Christmas might put in an appearance this year !!!) There will be a meeting on Monday 26th September 7:30 pm in the Church Office, to see how arrangements are going. If you are involved, please do your best to attend – many thanks.
SOCIAL GROUP – We look forward to holding a Harvest ‘Bring and Share’ Lunch in Bargates Hall on Harvest Sunday – 2nd October at about 12 noon. It will follow our now successful format, and everyone will be most welcome –Please look at the list at the back of church to give an indication of what you will be bringing! Our Parish Outing to Blackpool is planned for Saturday 29th October A different outing this year! but one which we hope will be a good one – a full day, finishing off with the Illuminations. The coach leaves church at 10 am, and arrives back in Whitchurch at approx. 9 pm. At the time of going to press—Tickets for children £7. 50 and Adults £8.
11 There will be a list at the back of church to sign – The outing is for church members, families and friends. For more information please contact Sheila on 662738 or 07714208178.
EINES DEUTSCHES REQUIEM— Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) One of the Choral-Orchestral ‗greats‘, Johannes Brahms German Requiem is being performed by the Border Singers on Saturday 24th September in the magnificent acoustics of St Alkmund‘s Church at 7:30 pm. Of the seven choruses, arguably the most well known is ‗How lovely are thy dwelling places‘. First performed in Vienna in 1867 and then two years later in Leipzig at the Gewandhaus immortalised by J S Bach, it will feature two grand pianos—that was how Brahms originally scored it— adding the full orchestral version later. Tickets are available now from choir members Roger and Anne Duffell (666631) and will be available on the door. On this occasion it will be sung in English! Here is a wonderful opportunity to support your local Chamber Choir and further enhance St Alkmund‘s as a fitting venue for such a marvellous work. Roger Duffell
1711 & ALL THAT! The 300th Anniversary of the collapse of our medieval church, after Evensong, on 31st July 1711 was mentioned in despatches at Evensong on 31st July 2011 by Canon William Price!

At the PCC meeting on 15th August, the draft Parish Profile (information for interested people) and advert were discussed with Bishop Mark and accepted. They have been forwarded to the diocesan office. The post will be advertised during mid-September. The closing date will be in early October and interviews held in late October. Our 2 parish representatives, John Stokes and Phil Williams, will be in involved in short-listing candidates and interviewing. They will have the deciding vote in accepting or rejecting applicants.
PCC members will have a chance to meet the short-listed candidates before the interviews take place. The PCC is also in the process of adopting the diocesan Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults policy, following which CRB checking will take place. Although changes are going to take place in the national system, the government has not yet published guidelines. The next PCC meeting will be on 29th September. Anne Monie

HARVEST FESTIVAL SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER Services at 8 am 10 am and 6:30 pm
COMMENTS FROM OUR VISITORS. BOOK “Came to see the tomb of „The English Achilles‟ Lovely church, nothing disappointing. Pleasing that you keep the church open—Thank You.”
HARVEST GIFTS Once again our Harvest Gifts, will be donated to Stonham Housing Association for use by the residents of Local hostels. They work with young people—single, homeless people & refugees.
“A wonderful peaceful place, and so beautiful. Thank you for keeping it open for visitors.”
Church members are encouraged, as in previous years, to invite a neighbour, friend or relative BACK TO CHURCH. Prayer cards will be available during August, and invitation cards during September for us to give to those we prayed for. If they accept, we bring them with us to one of the services on 25th September. If they can't come that day, there will always be a welcome in church for them. If you are reading this and would like to come, here is an invitation for you:
“Beautiful, peaceful and very calming (I found peace here) - Thank you!”
“A great encouragement to see the work you do in the community— May God bless this church.” “How lovely to walk into an open church! An impossibility where we live. Restful atmosphere and some lovely colourful artefacts to appreciate. Calm and lovely. Thank you. The memorial at the back of church—so unusual, so beautiful and interesting.”
Also they provide safe houses for men, women and children who are escaping domestic violence. The ‗clients‘ are shown how to prepare meals, using the vegetables and fruit provided, and how to prepare meals with the gifts from St Alkmund‘s, St George‘s and The White House School Harvest Services. Many of the young people come from broken homes. Not all Visitors to St. Alkmund‘s are holidaying on the Canal—The picture on the front cover is that of two cyclists on their way from Lands End to John O‘Groats, who stopped of at St. Alkmund‘s, for a much needed break, on the Shrewsbury to Liverpool leg of their journey. They are raising money for the Crisis Centre in Bristol which is the churches‘ ministry working with the homeless, people with addictions and providing safety to women who have been trafficked for sexual exploitation, helping them get back into society. They had raised £6,000 when we spoke to them! Track their progress on their website www.allthewayup.co.uk They were grateful for the rest and left this message in our Visitors‘ Book:
“Very nice and friendly feel to the church. My Grandparents got married here in 1895 (good choice)!”
“God is everywhere in this church.” “Praying that the Lord will bless the ministry of this lovely church.”
