I hope you’ll be her e at St. Gabr iel to dig into the practice of personal prayer with our guest, Steve Anderson, of Burning Hearts Disciples. We’ve talked a lot in this section of the bulletin about trying to really embrace a basic habit of prayer, particularly diving into Scripture with Lectio Divina. Some of us have held back for any number of reasons, or perhaps we’ve had a hard time getting started. This evening will motivate you to prioritize your prayer time, and give you a chance to really practice, right in the moment. It will be a great enrichment for each of us, literally no matter where we are in our relationship with God. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, Dec. 7th from 6:30 2 – 8:00 pm. All are welcome! Bring a friend!

Pastoral Ponderings Reflections for St. Gabriel the Archangel Last weekend I had the privilege of attending Mass in Nashville at a parish known as Christ the King. I wish I could say that I had sought out this particular church for a good reason, but really it was because it was across the street from a great barbecue place where we were planning a family gathering after Mass. It was a beautiful, but not ornate church, with a simple, elegant stone interior and soaring ceilings. In the front of the sanctuary, much like at St. Gabriel, hung an enormous crucifix, probably even a little larger than life-size. But the most striking feature was suspended several feet above Christ on the cross. It was a gigantic crown. As Catholics, we see the Cross so frequently that it has lost its shock value. But seeing the crucified Jesus juxtaposed with a majestic crown overhead was a helpful reminder of what St. Paul calls the scandal of the Cross. It’s a striking visual illustration of the paradox of this day. How do we come to worship One who we treated so cruelly? How do we draw our strength from the One who became weak for our sake? How does an instrument of torture and death become a throne for the Lord of the Universe? We should be startled by our faith. We should be troubled by the implications of the Gospel. When we place ourselves up there on the cross next to Jesus, in the role of the Good Thief, our own frailty and failing come into sharper focus. We deserve the sentence, and yet Jesus is the One to pay the price. What king would do that for His subjects? No king or president or prime minister or ruler that you will find in this world, that’s for sure. This ultimate love and sacrifice lay the foundation for the Kingship of Christ we commemorate today. This is the conclusion of our Church year, and the crowning of the Year of Mercy. We celebrate Jesus’ conquest of death, but also our own sharing in His redemption. His gift of forgiveness and salvation is so comprehensive that it elevates all of creation in the triumphant victory of God’s plan (see today’s Second Reading). But Jesus’ reign is also here and now, within and among us – it’s not just a hope in a distant future! So how are we to live today? What do we bring into the life of our family, our community, our workplace, our world? The guidance, not surprisingly, goes back to the Cross. Some of the earliest Christians made a name for themselves by rescuing the unwanted infants left by the Romans to die. When disease struck a town or city, Christians went in bravely to care for the sick and dying. Some Christians even sold themselves into slavery in order to pay the ransom of those who were kidnapped by pirates or marauding bandits. Their sacrifices were inspired by the crucified King whom they served. If we think Christianity is just for the crown, we are missing the path to get there. That path, as Jesus and all the saints have shown, goes only by way of the Cross. How is God calling me to be an ambassador of mercy this week? How am I called to relieve the suffering of those who are isolated, frightened, discriminated against, or beaten down? What sacrifices can I make to follow my King? -Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate -
