2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Connected Technologically with Flocknote. Jesus in the Eucharist binds us together spiritually as a faith family. He also inspires us to stay bound together in all sorts of ways. You may have heard Father Ken talk about something called Flocknote recently during Mass. It is a modern means of communicating which uses the latest technology to bind us more closely together as a faith community. Specifically, if you have a cell phone that lets you send and receive text messages, then you can register with the parish (St Mary or St Philip) to receive text messages informing you of happenings at the parishes, such as the start of a new Message Series. Another example would be a reminder about a special planned event. For instance, if we had this in place last October during the Ministry Fair at St Mary, we would have sent out a text message that said, “Remember to take time after Masses this upcoming weekend to visit the St Mary Ministry Fair in the hall downstairs and see the wonderful opportunities we have to serve God and each other”. And we would have texted the Christmas Mass schedule for both parishes before the holiday. We also want to take advantage of the capability to text groups within the larger parish communities. For example, we will have specific texts sent to parents with children in the religious education program, such as, “Reminder that the children’s Epiphany Pageant is this Sunday, January 8, during the 10:30am Mass at St. Mary”. Of course we would also use this capability to let parents know whether religious education classes are canceled when inclement weather hits. As we grow in our knowledge and ability to use Flocknote. I am confident we will find all kinds of imaginative and useful ways to use it, such as sending out daily prayers/meditations/reflections or requests for certain prayers and the like. This would be one way we as a faith community can respond to the Church’s exhortation to use modern technology and means of communication to spread the Gospel message and to share our faith. Now, here are the simple nuts-and-bolts ways you can register to receive messages from the parishes using Flocknote. With your cellphone, send a text to the number 84576 that says 2stmarys (for St Mary) or 2stphilips (for St Philip). You will receive a text with a link to the Flocknote site. Press on the link and complete the easy registration process. You can also go to the website www.stmarysgrafton.org, and register right on the home page. You can also go directly to http:flocknote.com/stmarysgrafton. Text STOP to 84576 to stop text notifications at any time. Text HELP for help. There is no charge for this service, but your carrier message and data rates may apply. View privacy policy and conditions at www.flocknote.com/txt. ******************************************************************************************************************************************* My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, January 22, 2017 marks the 44th anniversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which, with its companion case Doe v. Bolton, legalized abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy in every state in the nation. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (n. 373), designates Monday, January 23 (since Jan. 22 falls on a Sunday this year) as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”. All the faithful in dioceses throughout the United States of America are called to observe this day in a spirit of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for the violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. Forty-four years of legalized abortion in this country has left an incomprehensible aftermath. With over 58 million lives lost, and countless women and men, mothers and fathers, grandparents, siblings, and friends who have been deeply wounded physically, emotionally, and spiritually by this tragedy, we need now more than ever to re-commit ourselves to defending life. I encourage our diocesan parishes and institutions, and all the faithful, to observe reverently the Day of Prayer and Penance on January 23rd both personally and within your communities. Let us unite our hearts and minds through special acts of prayer, fasting, and sacrifice on this day, to uphold the inherent dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. As we reflect on this unspeakable tragedy, we also recall how the Church for many years has continued to reach out to those who have been so sadly affected by the culture of death, particularly through ministries providing aid to women and families in crisis pregnancies, offering the healing love and mercy of Christ to those wounded by abortion through the ministry of Project Rachel, and by continuing to teach and preach the truth and beauty about love that brings authentic freedom and happiness. It is through these charitable works, along with our fervent prayers and sacrifices, that the culture can be transformed, and the great goods of life, marriage, and religious liberty can be protected and upheld. Let us take this opportunity of the January 23 Day of Prayer and Penance to renew our resolve to live and proclaim the Gospel of Life. May we respond generously to the challenge Saint Pope John Paul II put forth in Evangelium vitae: “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. May an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from the heart of every believer.” Our active participation in the shared commitment to the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person will with God’s grace, truly work toward the building up of a Culture of Life and a Civilization of Love. With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester

St. Mary and St. Philip Religious Education To Amy Crossin, Michelle Larose, Kristi Williams and Kristin Wood: Thank you very much for your loving commitment and leadership in our Epiphany Pageant! This sacred event strongly reminded us of the reason for our celebration: the Personification of God’s love for us. You “wowed” us! ***************************************************************************************************************************************** Inclement Weather: Sundays and Mondays: watch WCVB Channel 5 on TV for class cancellation. If Grafton Public Schools are closed on Monday, we are, too. Please pray for them as they go without food for 24 hours starting Friday, March 17th, and ending Saturday, March 18th with Eucharist . They will be having a free will offering bake sale here at St. Philip on February 12th, just in time to buy something for Valentines Day! Please support our young people as they fight hunger; if you would like to make a donation, please place in it an envelope marked 24-hour Famine, attention Carole. These kids are our future Church; thank you for your generous support. ******************************************************************************************************************************************** Thank You for Adopt-A-Family The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” for your generous support of the Adopt–a-Family program. Through the generous support of our parishioners at St. Mary and St. Philip we were able to provide 17 families in need with Christmas gifts and dinner. Christmas gifts for 17 children were provided, but more importantly, a need was filled with your kindness and love. We also want to say “Thank You” to James Taillefer and Pack 106 for providing the 17 beautiful food baskets each containing an S&S Gift Card to assist with Christmas dinner. Thank you also to those who made donations of cash or gift cards to share with our families. We have much to be thankful for- YOU!! ******************************************************************************************************************************************** “Prayer that Changes Us” An evening for Catechists Join us for a light dinner, dessert and coffee. Market Sunday’s Outreach Program “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” is set up by our St. Vincent de Paul and Market Sunday ministries to communicate with our parishioners on seasonal food items that would help to broaden our food pantry. The items being requested are: Ramen Noodles, soap (bar, soft), toothpaste, tooth brushes (single), non-sugared cereal, cookies that adults would prefer (Fig Newtons, Ginger Snaps, etc.), canned coffee, tea, hot chocolate, rice, rice pilaf, rice mixes, Hamburger Helper, mayonnaise (small jars), pancake mix and syrup . Please remember this is only a suggested guideline; any and all items are appreciated. Food items can be left in the Gathering Space at St. Mary on the Market Sunday food cart, downstairs on the cart located by the food cabinets, or on the table to the left of the cabinets. At St. Philip, you may leave them in the basket marked SVDP located at the entrance of the church. We are blessed to have the generous parish families of St. Mary and St. Philip and very grateful for all the food you donate. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ 2nd Sunday Evening Mass at St. Philip — On Sunday, 29 January, at 5:00pm at St. Philip Church, we will celebrate a Mass. In my years as a priest, I have seen how increasingly difficult it is for families with children in grammar school or high school to balance social activities such as sports with their participation in the worship life of their faith communities. I know well that many St. Philip and St. Mary families find themselves, for example, at the 6:30pm Mass on Sunday night at St. Luke parish in Westborough. That’s why we’re trying this experiment: to offer a 5:00pm Mass once a month on a Sunday night. We invite everyone to make Sunday worship easier for them—especially those with children in religious education program at 6:00pm on Sundays at St. Philip. The Mass will include religious education students serving in liturgical roles such as lecturing. And St. Philip’s new Music Director Jonathan Capace is bringing the contemporary praise and worship music ensemble “4U”. And although they play liturgical music different from the more traditional, they will not be playing the more extreme Christian rock music which, for example, we hear in Life Teen Masses. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Holy Hour for Life Deacon Fred was supposed to lead the last regularly scheduled Prayer Line prayer service on Monday, 2 January. However, this was canceled because of the long New Year's holiday weekend. Making up for this, and seizing the opportunity to respond to the American bishops' call for prayer and penance for human life on 23 January (see Bishop McManus' letter on page 3), Deacon Fred will be leading a Holy Hour for Reparation and Healing at 7:00pm that evening in St. Mary church. Come and pray before Jesus in the Eucharist for a conversion of hearts and minds to a Culture of Life in which all human beings are cherished and protected from conception to natural death. Other things we can do to pray and be informed about this critical issue include:    

Pray for country’s elected officials that they may enact laws that protect human life from the moment of conception to natural death, respect the constitutional and God-given right to religious freedom, and rights of conscience. Prayerfully consider making a commitment to continuing your prayer for the dignity of human life on an on-going basis throughout the year – for example, saying one Hail Mary every day for an end to abortion, encouraging more involvement in the USCCB Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty, etc. Take some time during the month of January to read and reflect on Pope John Paul II’s encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life). (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangeliumvitae_en.html).
