Christ is for you both shepherd and door; he himself is both pasture and provider. The true shepherd comes looking for you; you have been lovingly hoisted onto his shoulders and brought back to the sheepfold, that is, to the house of God, which is the Church.” ~St. Augustine
St. Augustine Parish 43 Essex St., Andover, MA www.staugustineparish.org 978-475-0050
St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA Dear Parishioners, HAPPY FEAST DAY! We celebrate the Feast Day – Solemnity – of our Patron, Saint Augustine, this weekend and it is a triple celebration: The Patron Saint of our Parish and the Patron Saint of the Augustinian Friars. For me personally, it is also the 42 nd (!!) anniversary of my profession of vows as an Augustinian Friar. I am happy to tell you that we have 12 Novices beginning their year of Novitiate right now in Racine, Wisconsin. We had four Novices profess their first vows on August 1 st. We had two profess their final, solemn vows last weekend. Please keep them and all our young men in formation in your prayers…and pray for more! What Saint Augustine began as an early form of monastic/religious community life in the fourth century was canonically formalized by the Popes in the 13 th century and we continue on the path our great Patron set forth in his Rule for Religious Life. FYI, there are 2673 of us Friars present in 435 houses in 46 countries. There are 83 monasteries of over 1400 Augustinian cloistered nuns around the world too. More meaningful than the numbers and distribution is the spirit which unites us who strive, as Saint Augustine taught us, “to be of one mind and one heart, intent upon God” and to serve the Church wherever and however she needs us to do. Consequently, you find Augustinians living and working together as preachers and pastors, as educators and administrators, as missionaries and chaplains. Rarely do you find one of us alone. Saint Augustine’s spirit and spirituality is captured in our Order’s insignia which you can see painted high on the wall over the doorway to the right of the tabernacle. There is the open book of the bible, and the burning heart. This comes from Saint Augustine’s statement in his Confessions: “Your Word, O Lord, pierced my heart and ever since I have burned with love for You.” In our gospel today we see Jesus as our Good Shepherd. Saint Augustine loved this gospel for he saw Jesus in the image of the shepherd, the pasture and the gate. He said, “Christ is for you both shepherd and door; he himself is both pasture and provider. The true shepherd comes looking for you; you have been lovingly hoisted onto his shoulders and brought back to the sheepfold, that is, to the house of God, which is the Church.” In Christ, all are welcome! Happy Feast Day! Father Peter Marriage Banns III Adult Scripture Study begins in September - we will be studying the Book of Isaiah. This is a 26 week study which will be offered on Tuesdays from 1-2:30pm beginning September 22nd and Wednesdays from 7-8:30pm beginning September 23rd. No prior experience necessary. Visit www.staugustineparish.org/ scripture-study for more info.

St. Augustine Parish, Andover, MA Notes from the Loft Calling all SINGERS grades 3 and up to join us for rehearsal on Thursday September 24 th 3:154:30 in St. Augustine Church as we prepare to have our own PAPAL Mass on Sunday September 27th at the 9:30am Family Mass. We invite all students who are members of St. Augustine School Choir and our own Parish Choir along with any new children who would like to join us for this special event! We will need singers and children to carry banners and play instruments. This special Mass will take place on the same day Pope Francis celebrates in Philadelphia. With the support of the Religious Education Director, Bridget Rao and Sr. Madonna Kling, we encourage you to help us make this Mass come alive. The first important step is forming a vibrant Youth Choir. For more information regarding this Mass and the NEW Youth Choir, please contact Cynthia Arsenault, Director of Music at 978-475-0050 x34 or email
[email protected].
Religious Education Religious Education classes start in just a few weeks. If you have not yet registered your child or children in the program, we ask you to do so as soon as possible. Some classes have already filled up. Complete information about registration is at www.staugustineparish.org/reledregistration. Registration may be mailed in, dropped off at the Religious Education offices or completed online. So far we have 481 registered families – which leaves about 150 families that still need to register. Start by consulting the schedule to help you choose the day and time of your class. All detailed class schedules are posted on the website. Save the Date for Catechetical Sunday on September 13th at the 8am Mass. Once again all catechists including those not involved in the Religious Education program are invited to gather for Catechetical Sunday. You are invited to attend the 8am Mass on Sunday September 13th. Afterwards we will go to the Parish Center for light refreshments. Training and distribution of teaching materials will take place for Religious Education teachers. Additionally this time will provide us with an opportunity to meet everyone in a relaxed atmosphere. Even if you have taught for many years please come along to mentor those who are teaching for the first time. Please RSVP 978 475-0050 x38 or email your grade coordinator.
Around the Parish Thank you, generous parishioners, for partnering with us in our 2015 Back-to-School Project. Your strong support in this summer's project is making it possible for many of our Andover neighbors with limited incomes to buy their school-age children several items of new clothing and shoes for the start of school. On Saturday, August 22, St. A's Vincentians visited 49 families all over town to distribute $85 in Kohl's gift cards to each of 90 children. We wish you could have been with us to see and hear how delighted and appreciative all members of these families were -- especially older brothers and sisters whom you helped in years past, now going on to college. You are a blessing to these children, their parents and our community! Gratefully, St. Augustine Conference, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul There will be no senior First Friday luncheon on September 4th as there will be no children's Mass or Adoration that day. We will start off the new year with our usual pizza luncheon on Friday October 2nd. If you are or know of a homebound parishioner who is no longer able come to church but would appreciate a visit from one of our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to bring the Blessed Sacrament, please contact Lisa LaCourse by calling 978-475-0501. 4
Sunday, August 30th, 2015 Struggling in Your Marriage? If your marriage is tearing the two of you apart and if you are considering separation or divorce, we believe Retrouvaille can help. This peer ministry is led by couples who have found resurrection in their marriages through this program. The next weekend is Sept 11-13. For more info visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com.
Year of Consecrated Life Sin isn’t the absence of love; love is already there. Rather it’s the failure to choose to take advantage of opportunities to love. Review your day and see where you did not bother to love. Then take the trouble to do it tomorrow. ~Take Five for Faith
"One in Mind and Heart, Intent Upon God" ~St. Augustine Featured Ministry Music Ministry St. Augustine Parish is blessed to have more than 30 ministries which provide a variety of services within our parish and throughout our local community. Our parishioners truly understand what it means to respond to the call to service and to fulfill the corporal works of mercy. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. For a complete list and description of each ministry, visit www.staugustineparish.org and for more info please contact the listed coordinator. Our Music Ministry consists of over sixty parishioners ranging from third grade to adults! We are truly blessed to have six active cantors, four instrumentalists (organists, pianists and guitarists), a twenty-one member adult choir, over twenty in our Youth Choir and a Teen Band! All these musicians provide music at our six weekend liturgies! We also have members who play the violin, cello and flute! We also play at funerals and weddings. Happily our music program grows every year and we really want to encourage more young people to join our music ministry.
