NEWSLETTER No 35

Thursday 10th November 2016

Dear Parents, I am very pleased to announce that we have appointed 2 new specialist teachers who will be joining our community in 2017. Mrs. Lisa Poulter will be teaching Visual Arts and Mrs. Melanie Bouras will be teaching Performing Arts. Both teachers are experienced in their fields, come very highly recommended and I am very much looking forward to impact they will be making to our learning community in the years to come. We are currently in the process of developing the Whole School Concert for next year! On Wednesday this week, the Bike Shed Committee met with three of our Year 6 students who presented the student requests for our new bike shed area. The feedback from the committee was overwhelmingly positive with Milan G, Isabelle F and Millie F making quite an impression on the parents and myself with their articulate and well researched presentation. Many of the ideas presented will be incorporated into the design brief. We expect the project to be completed in early 2017. Thanks to Katie McKinnon, Nate Preston and Kate MacKenzie who have given up their time to assist on this committee. We are on the lookout for parents who can assist us with structural engineering and building surveying/building permits. If anyone is available please contact the office. Earlier this week we held our 2017 Foundation students - Parent Information Evening. I would like to personally thank Mrs Irene Greenway and Miss Charlotte Ireland who coordinated the evening and my special thanks to Yvette, Emma and Mrs Prosser who have also assisted with the transition days. Special thanks to our Year 6 guest speakers – Sophie P, Luca S, Isabelle F, Will B and Clare S who spoke to the parents about life at St. Finbar’s. The feedback from the parents in attendance was overwhelmingly positive about our students and the amazing ambassadors they are for our school. This Friday, I will be attending the Remembrance Day service at the Green Point Cenotaph at 11am with four of our Year 6 Students - Luca S, Maxwell P, Eoin H and Mark F. It is a very important occasion where we will be representing St. Finbar’s School. The students will be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in honour of the many service men and women who have bravely given their lives defending our country and the privileged way of life we enjoy today. We will also be observing a minutes silence at 11am at school where we will play ‘The Last Post’ and the ‘Reveille’ to mark this important occasion on our National calendar. The year 6 students have been selling badges, wristbands and poppies to raise funds for this worthy cause this week. I would like to thank Mr. Rodrigues who has been instrumental in organising the new sound proofing in the Year 5 classrooms. The installation for this project happened on Tuesday afternoon and went well into the early hours of the morning! I would also like to thank the P & F who have funded this project. Having classrooms that are user friendly and provide the best possible learning environment for our teachers and students is incredibly important.

Our Year 5 students have also started their journey into Year 6 leadership roles with the commencement of the Speaking with power program. This will continue over the coming weeks with all Year 5 parents invited to the final speeches on Monday 28th November. More information will follow in the coming weeks. The Year 5 Students will also be participating in the annual leadership day next week at Centenary Park in in East Bentleigh. Thank you to all of the families who attended mass on Sunday to celebrate all of our past students who currently attend De La Salle College. It was wonderful to see so many ‘Old Boys’ attend this special celebration, as well as our Year 5 & 6 students who got to meet Mr Peter Houlihan – Principal of De La Salle, who was in attendance. Parents & Friends AGM & School Board AGM: This is the final call for nominations for the P & F association, please consider joining this incredibly important group who do so much for our school community. Several people have also verbally spoken to me about their interest in nominating for our school board. Can I please request if anyone is interested to please email me no later than Friday THIS week if you intend to nominate for the School Advisory Board. Only emailed applications can be considered at this time. This is once again, a reminder about car safety around our school. I have received a number of complaints from concerned residents – particularly on Centre Rd – about the number of cars that “Queue up” to get into the school grounds and turn illegally when exiting the front gates. It is incumbent upon all parents/drivers to ensure they are not breaking any road rules when picking up students from school. Please observe all no parking/no standing areas particularly around the very busy and dangerous intersection at the corner of Nepean Highway and Centre Rd. I have again alerted the Bayside Council and Local Police to patrol around the school at these peak times to ensure the safety of all community members. I would like to wish all of our Year 5 & 6 students who are competing in the Cricket competition on Friday well as they represent our school. Results will be in next week’s newsletter. How wonderful it has been this week seeing the live feed from the Foundation classrooms of the chickens hatching. What an excellent use of technology being able to see all of the action ‘out of school hours!’

Peace and Blessings, Pat Berlingeri Principal

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS ~ Mrs. June Kellar What do we do when things go wrong? How do we find faith in God when life collapses around us? These are questions all Christians face and the gospel this weekend gives us a brief insight into the pain and struggle of Luke’s small community who had such faith and hope in Jesus, but life did not appear to be blessed. God wasn’t intervening to save them from conflict within families and persecution from governments. Luke tries to reassure his community that such discord and trouble is part of a living Christianity and can be expected. Faith in Jesus doesn’t take us out of the world, or permit us to live as some sort of aliens in the world. We are part of a struggling humanity. When bad things happen to good people, when they happen to us, we have choices. We can give into desolation, depression and despair. Or we can choose to hope. Christian hope is not about ‘putting on a happy face, come what may’. St Augustine tells us hope is based on the justice God wants in this world, and will see done in the next. Interestingly, one of the signs Jesus speaks about in today’s Gospel is famine. We have known for thirty years that if we all lived justly and shared from our abundance, we could have seen an end to starvation. We choose otherwise and sometimes blame God. Today’s Gospel is not interested in a timetable for disaster. It’s about encouraging us to drop the anchor of hope overboard when the times get tough. As we spend time reflecting this week, perhaps we can accept those things which we cannot change and change for the better those things we can. Maybe, reading recent media statements from the Australian Catholic Bishops and St Vincent de Paul Society on the proposed new immigration laws, could motivate us help bring about change …

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, and our Social Justice leaders have been selling Poppies, pens and stickers… At Assembly on Monday 6A shared the importance of the day and a minute’s silence was observed …

Year 5W students are continuing to work on their biographies of a resident of Mayflower and looking forward to presenting these books to their special resident in the not too distant future.

Enjoy your week,

STUDENT WELLBEING NEWS ~ Mr. Nigel Rodrigues As we quickly approach the As end of the school year we can often find ourselves tired and stressed. Children can feel the same way and they need to be reminded to get lots of sleep and to not let the little things worry them. Remember to take care of each other each day and enjoy our last few weeks of the 2016 school year.

Family Christmas Activity HOMEWORK TERM 4 Week 7 – Week 11 All regular homework will conclude at the end of this week to allow students to work on a family Christmas activity. Of course children can continue to read each night and complete Maths Mate activities. This year’s Family Christmas Activity is to make an A3 Advent Calendar, one per family. Advent Calendars are a traditional symbol of Christmas and can be made in a variety of ways. Many Advent calendars take the form of a large rectangular card with "windows", of which there are usually 24: one for each day of December leading up to and including Christmas Eve (December 24). Consecutive windows are opened every day leading up to Christmas, beginning on December 1. The calendar windows open to reveal an image, a poem, a portion of a story (such as the story of the Nativity of Jesus) or just a word. Your child, with your help, is asked to create the Calendar and draw the images or write the short message, words, prayers or poems behind each window. The Calendars can be brought to school on Wednesday 30th November to be hung around the corridors of the school and the Church as the excitement builds in the lead up to the end of the school year as part of our preparation for Advent. Please keep the Calendars to A3 size for practical reasons and ease of transportation. Classroom teachers will explain the activity to students. Nightly reading can be continued as well as Maths Mate for some classes until the end of term. You can see a number of examples of Advent Calendar’s here, __________________________________________________________________________________

CURRICULUM NEWS SPORT NEWS ~ Mrs Tania Thompson

SMR BASKETBALL WRAP: Congratulations to both our Senior Girls and Boys basketball teams, who played in the Southern Metropolitan Regional Basketball Finals last Thursday in Pakenham. Both teams played extremely well in their three pool-games and managed to win them all to place 1st in their pool. Despite gallant efforts in their semi-final game, both teams were narrowly defeated to end their successful SSV campaign. A HUGE thank you goes to Mel Raymond and Andrea Healy for giving up their day to help Mrs Thompson support the teams. The students are very grateful for your kind efforts and time. A special mention also goes to Maxwell P who did an amazing job as Coach of the Boys team. All players are to be congratulated for their amazing teamefforts over the day.

T20 Blast Dendy District days Our Year 3&4 T20 teams participated in their tournament day at Darling Park last Friday. Congratulations to the 5 teams on their team-spirit efforts and enthusiasm. Many of the students were first-time players, some had previous experience and some are current players, which is the reason for the different divisions offered. Despite our Rookies missing out on clinic-time in the morning, they were able to experience a T20 Game situation in the afternoon. All other teams played 3 -4 games over the day against other Dendy schools. Many thanks goes to our Parent Helpers on the day; Matt Lalor, Kylie Hitchiner and Natalie Bell; who assisted with bus travel and managing their child’s team for the day. THANK YOU!! Tomorrow see’s our five Year 5&6 T20 teams head to Darling Park, Malvern East for their round-robin tournament day. We wish them all a great day out!

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE NEWS Casual Bookings/Cancellations/Adjustments please call 95920994 directly. email:[email protected] EMAIL NOT TO BE USED TO CHANGE DAILY ATTENDANCES EMAIL TO BE USED for changing permanent bookings, making advanced bookings/cancellations (ie holiday program, school closure days), account queries, addressing special needs, incidents that need clarification, and the like. Emails are not checked prior to a session as administrative duties are addressed off site and away from the service as our priority lies with the active supervision of children, their development and wellbeing. Sunsmart

Hats during Before &After Care, School Closure & Holiday Program Strategies for teaching sun protection in the service will be based on children actively practicing and monitoring their own implementation of sun protection strategies as active learners (MTOP Framework Outcome 4). This will include children having opportunities to access UV alerts and monitoring exposure to the sun of both themselves and their peers (MTOP Outcome 5). These opportunities for learning empowers children to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing (MTOP Outcome 3) Prior to going outside, children will determine UV levels. Should they find that UV is above 3 then they must "Slip Slop Slap". Please provide a broad rimmed or legionnaire sun hat and sunscreen . Holiday Program-Planned experiences As with every holiday program children's interests are canvassed. We know that children learn best when they are interested and engaged. Using children’s interests as the basis for our curriculum decision making helps to ensure that learning is not only interesting but also meaningful and relevant to children. As the School Age Care Framework (MTOP) notes, being responsive to children’s strengths, abilities and interests helps to ‘ensure motivation and engagement in learning’ (DEEWR, 2009, p. 14). The activities are child-chosen and child-directed and have a wider appeal to other children and to the whole group. It is therefore important to acknowledge children's efforts and ideas and as such the holiday program flyer will highlight the names and activities of the children whose ideas have been used. Thank you to the children who worked alongside Educators to ensure that the holiday program is a fun and interesting place to be. Activities whilst planned are flexible with consideration for active and passive time and seasonal changes. We aim to provide opportunities for children to relax as well as continue their learning journey through varied and interesting interactions with each other and community partners. The Holiday Program Flyer will be out next week Thursday 17/11/2016 with the newsletter. Holiday Program-Special excursion Tuesday 24/1/2017
