Our creator, our savior, our companion, bless this journey of a new school year that we undertake today. Refresh our souls and renew our spirits as we embrace the beautiful ministry you have called us to. We welcome those who are new to this community and ask that you strengthen them to share the wonderful gifts you have given them. Lord, make our hearts pure as we prepare for the return of students to this school, and may you guide them to return with open hearts and minds eager to learn. We ask this in Your name, Amen Dear Students, Parents and Friends of St Anne’s, Welcome back to all our families for the year! An extra special welcome to the Hill family who have joined our community this year and to our returning Sawyer family. May your time at St Anne’s be full of opportunity, excitement and happiness. Some sad news was delivered to our community prior to the school year starting with the passing of Mr Peter Sell. Peter was a wonderful man and fought valiantly against the cancer that prematurely saw him resign last year from his position as principal of St Anne’s. He was well regarded and respected, not only at St Anne’s, but through the entire System of Catholic Education. Last week I, along with the majority of our school staff, attended Mr Sell’s funeral. The service was an absolute testament to who he was as a man, a father, husband, friend, educator and leader. The congregation was over flowing with people and the celebration of Peter’s life epitomised who he was as person and teacher. The underlying message that his capacity to build relationships and impact on schools, bringing the best, and looking for the best in everyone was highlighted. It truly is a wonderful legacy he has left. Prior to attending the funeral I spoke to the school assembly about Mr Sell and how he has inadvertently given our school a great challenge to take on this year. One of our strategic directions is to develop a growth mindset and to nurture dispositions in learning that allow individuals to aspire to be the best they can be. Peter left us with many great memories and gifts, but speaking openly at the end of year Presentation Night last year, his simple message to ‘live for the NOW’ has provided us with possibly his greatest gift. So our goal for this year and our opportunity to honour Mr Sell and his optimism, hope and wish for us all is to live in the now. Let us be a school that aims to reach for the stars, adopt a have a go attitude and aspire to be the best we can be with the gifts we have all been given. ‘Live for the now’…not for tomorrow! Achieve, celebrate, be gracious, seek peace and live in harmony with others is what Mr Sell would no doubt want for us all. Let’s make it a great year! SWIMMING LESSONS: Congratulations to our students in the manner in which they have ‘taken on’ the challenges of swimming lessons over the last week, having only just returned to school. Great to see all students organised and ready to go in the morning. (A huge thanks to parents for their support in this. )

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS: Welcome back to Father Bernard from holiday! Next week is the beginning of Lent, however, due to swimming lessons on at this moment, the logistics of organising a Whole School Mass to attend an Ash Wednesday Service has presented some problems. Thankfully Mr Godwin and Father have been able to come up with some options that will allow all students to attend Church on this day. Please see the attached times for Ash Wednesday Services and thankyou to Father for his flexibility to allow us all to recognise this important day. EARLY YEARS PLAYGROUND: Upon returning to school last week our Early Years students were greeted with a ‘new playground’, well a bit of a transformation really. A few licks of paint, great piles of sand, some logs, rocks, stepping stones, new benches and best of all some ‘huge’ irrigation pipes transformed the playground into, what was really quite a drab and uninviting area, to a really exciting place to play. Thankyou to all our staff who helped out one morning in the last week of Term Four; but an extra special thanks to Mr Godwin, Mr McConville and Mrs Zarzycki who came in over the holidays on several occasions to build this area. Also, to Mrs Panetta and Miss Martelli who inadvertently ‘walked’ into school one morning, only to find themselves on the end of some tools. Thankyou also to Mr Todd Wilson and Harvey Water for donating the irrigation pipe that was used to created our tunnels. It was wonderful to see our Kindergarten and Pre Primary students enjoying this exciting area during their play times. UNIFORMS: The uniform plays a big part in the identity of our students and I am pleased to say that everyone has started the year brilliantly with the correct use of school uniforms. Please see the attached uniform explanation chart for correct information pertaining to uniform. This is also available on the school website. The biggest contentious issue around uniform is shoes, especially school sports shoes. Last year there was quite some liberty around shoe use and this has been tapered back this year. Note the policy states: “White sports socks. Sport shoes are to be subtle colourings. NO fluorescent (laces and shoes) , canvas or basketball shoes to be worn.”‘ Please be mindful of this ruling. The school has listened to parents concerns around shoe purchase and aimed to come to this fair compromise. Please, don’t ‘stretch ‘the application of the term ‘subtle’. If misunderstandings are to continue then further clarification on shoe expectations will be created. In time, if need be, uniform infringement notes will be sent home so please endeavour to be proactive in aligning dress standards to the policy. P & F MEETNG: Please note there will be a P & F meeting next week, Tuesday 13 th February in Mercy Hall. Start time will be 9.00am. All parents are welcome. The P and F are keen to look at events for the year and discuss parent helpers. Please note also, the first P & F event for the year will be the Meet & Greet Sundowner. This is next Friday 16 February, start time 5.30pm. Please see the advertisement further into the newsletter for details. SCHOOL BAGS: It has been great to see our school bags in use, in fact the up take of this new uniform initiative has been wonderful with many of the older students purchasing school bags. HEALTHY EATING: One of the roles of schools is to develop healthy eating expectations amongst staff, students and families. Healthy eating meaning choices of food for recess and lunch that will equip our students to work through the day, adequately and properly’ fuelled up’ to manage a day of work.

Speaking to teachers there is a concern as to the types of foods some of our students are packing for lunch and the quantities of. This year our policy around healthy eating will be revised and shared with parents later in the year but in the meantime please be mindful of what is going into your children’s lunch boxes. Pre packaged, sweet items high in sugar types of food, although enjoyable, are not necessarily healthy and at all helpful to enable a balanced, proper and nutritious diet therefore allowing for best performance of children throughout the day. There are many great websites to aid parents in this area. I have attached one below if it offers assistance http://www.nutritionaustralia.org/national/resources/children Additional to this I do need to ask parents to be mindful as to how they help celebrate their child’s birthday with classmates. As a school we will also be revising and implementing a policy based around how we celebrate special events in our schools. Not meaning to be the scrooge, as I am happy to celebrate birthdays for students, but parents please be mindful of the quantities of food, the types of foods and the expectations put on teachers around food distribution when celebrating a birthday. It is hoped we can have this policy available sooner rather than later in order to give clear directions for parents to follow. JUST LEADERSHIP DAY: Last week four students from Year 6 represented St Anne’s at the Just Leadership day in Bunbury. This event has been running for several years but the first time St Anne’s has been involved. It is a day organised by CARITAS Australia, that has student leaders within the southwest schools coming together and looking at Leadership enhancement around the church’s mission within their school. Specific to this program is the notion of service and growing the mission of service and social justice within schools. Further information is available at: http://www.caritas.org.au/learn/schools/justleadership-days Thanks to Mrs Pronk and our St Anne’s representative – Alain Rodas, Charrish Maniego, Jack Beech and Imogen Italiano for attending. We look forward to leaning more about CARITAS during the period of Lent and how this organisation aims to serve and aid others in need. MAKING JESUS REAL: This year we will continue to learn more about the ‘MJR way of life’ and how we can bring this philosophy into our daily behaviours. Please take note of the ‘Making Jesus Real tip of the week.’ By changing our behaviours and attitudes to live more like Jesus we can definitely make a difference to other individual’s circumstances, as well as our own. Have a safe and happy week Darrin Croft PRINCIPAL
