TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Abraham and Sarah show hospitality to messengers of the LORD (Genesis 18:1-10a). Psalm — He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading — Paul speaks of the stewardship given to him to complete the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages past (Colossians 1:24-28). Gospel — Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Mary has chosen the better part (Luke 10:38-42). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Mi6:1-4, 6-8; Ps50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt12:38-42 Monday: Tuesday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 85:2-8; Mt 12:46-50 Wednesday: Jer 1:1, 4-10; Ps 71:1-4a, 5-6ab, 15, 17; Mt 13:1-9 Thursday: Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13; Ps 26:6-7ab, 8-11; Mt 13:10-17 Friday: Jer 3:14-17; Ps 63:2-6, 8-9; Jn 20:1-2, 11-18 Saturday: Jer 7:1-11; Ps 84:3-6a, 8a, 11; Mt 13:24-30 Sunday: Gen 18:20-32; Ps138:1-3, 6-8; Col 2:12-14; Lk 1:1-13

THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY Last Sunday’s “Good Samaritan” parable concluded with Jesus’ command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha’s hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary’s “hands-off” as “choosing the better part” (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha “burdened with much serving by herself” (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence “superior,” but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries “second-class” discipleship? No; Jesus’ example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus’ two-fold challenge: both “go and do” and “sit and listen.” Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time WHAT IS RCIA ?

What if you had something missing in your life that turned out to be the greatest need of all and the most deeply rewarding call of your entire life? Can you continue living without satisfying this need; without answering this call? If you are over 18, and have not been BAPTIZED, received your FIRST COMMUNION, or been CONFIRMED in your faith with the Sacrament of Confirmation, and you attend Mass, then you do have such a need; you do have this call! RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. When you say “yes” to God and satisfy this need, your life will be transformed in ways you could never imagine. You will no longer worry about this emptiness, or feeling of not being fully whole (or at one with God), or live with regret. The Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation are the true and tangible celebrations of Christ present in our lives! What are you waiting for? Invite Christ into your life! Believe, celebrate, and live! Receive these Sacraments of Initiation! There you find the cure for your anxiety, your nervousness, sluggishness, procrastination, loneliness, anger and selfishness. Allow this transformation to propel you toward becoming the "best version of yourself." (Matthew Kelly). That person is the one God created you to be. Scripture states, we are people created in God’s image and likeness; therefore we are filled with enthusiasm, love, dynamism. Come join our weekly RCIA conversations in faith formation, in the Pastoral Center Mondays from 7 to 8:30. Start in early October: God filled, you will soon lead your life full of love. Soon, you will have discovered life’s greatest lesson, and the genius of Catholicism! Do not miss one more day! Come, be received in BAPTISM, FIRST COMMUNION, or make the decision to be CONFIRMED in your faith, through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Do it now! Call the Office of Catechesis 305 361-1378; or email [email protected].

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 17, 2016

It is [Christ] whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. — Colossians 1:28b

Gospel reading: As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Brief commentary Too often, we hide behind our credentials, our expertise, our work, our designated role or function in order to avoid the awkwardness of simply being human. Like Martha in today’s Gospel, we bury ourselves in our work and agendas and calendars to avoid loving and being loved by our “guests.” Jesus invites each one of us to make a place in our lives for the “better part”—for welcoming the joy and love of family and friends that is the very presence of God. We — and Martha — come to realize that is the awareness of God’s presence in our midst — the “better part” — that gives meaning and joy to every dimension of our lives. It is the things of God that should define the events and decisions of our lives — not the other way around. May we, too, seek the “better part”: the love of God that enables us to work our “fields” for the benefit of all and to make and keep our households as dwelling places of God’s peace.

Today’s reading offers three significant messages:

For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your  Jesus had female disciples. This makes him unique answers, ideas or feelings. among the teachers of antiquity. Jesus was a true progressive and independent person. For him God and people come first.  This gospel calls on all believers toward an active Christian life centered on the listening of God’s Word and prayerful faith, rather than on worries, anxieties, and excessive distractions. In this way the Kingdom of God will be advanced.  The gospel calls us to abandon our worries on “many things” and to focus on what is most valuable. With so many activities and distractions in our lives, Christians must not let themselves be pulled away from the core of their identity, life and mission in Jesus Christ.

1. What is my view of the Church? Am I aware that Jesus’

followers were composed of a highly mixed group brought together as one family? How does this inspire my life as a member of the Church? 2. Is my life as a Christian grounded in prayer, study and reflection? 3. How can greater study of the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, theological books and books on the lives of Saints, conducted both individually in community, enable and challenge me to grow as a Christian and to offer meaningful Christian witness?
