This weekend Nov 14 – Short Course Series 2- day 1 Rainbow Club sailing

Rainbow fleet training– 11 am on the water, please be in time to set up. Al fleets -Short Course #2-day 1 - Inside - OD – David Clarke

Last weekend – Rough weather Handicap Saturday morning did not bring the usual weather pattern, as far that is possible in the Marlborough Sounds. Wind well and truly settled in early. North West 10-15 knots. The kids of the Rainbow fleet did great in their training. At the end the wind started to pick up a lot with big gusts coming through the harbour. While everyone was getting ready we did a team treasure Hunt. Two teams made up of rainbow fleet sailors with a few other young sailors had to find parts of an optimist that where hiding around the QCYC club. We had an orange team and a yellow team. All yellow team parts were marked with yellow tape. The teams raced off to find all the bits. Mario was clever to find the tow rope that was buried in the beach sand. In the end the Orange team won but it was chocolates all around.

Orange team found Mast

Yellow team got a centre board

Putting it all together

The racing plan was to sail outer Harbour past Mabel. First race sailing out. One race out there and the last race on the course with finish at the club. It was decided to keep all optimist fleets inner Harbour as only 1 open fleet Opti sailor left. As a few of the Open optimist attended the North Island Champs in Napier (results further on). Some of the grey laser sailors decided it was too much. Seren Adams had a go in his laser but headed back in after some good dunking’s. Two of the paper Tigers headed out but Nigel Greenbank had an unfortunate day and broke his mast. While the Naiad’s helped him out, the Starlings were having an awesome time playing in the heavy wind. Both Emily Overend and Jasper Hopkins had their Starlings flying so fast that the spray hid boats and sailors. A few capsizes did not deter them. All the spectators could see was big grins when they came near the clubhouse to do a daring tack or gibe before speeding off again. Toby had a try too but seem to spend more time in then above the water. Alistair Gifford was the only laser left on the water and was also having a great time. The speed he got the laser up to downwind as an awesome sight. Also a few crash and burns of Ali Couldn’t spoil the adrenaline rush. By this stage the racing was cancelled due to the weather. The optimist sailors were a bit hesitant but Jack Franklin headed out to join the fun. River Hopkins and Loui Poletti decided that together they would be able to keep the Optimist right way up and sailed Firebolt to and fro the Harbour. After this the wind started to drop a bit and a few other young sailors had a go. The Handicap series will be sailed another time.

Some were having fun!

Housekeeping We need to share the jobs around. Especially with putting the Rib’s away after racing. Trailers backed on the ramp, ribs driven up, boats washed, engines rinsed and put into the boatshed. Please help out when required so it is not always the same sorting it out. Thanks.

Optimist Training Clinic – 17 to 21 Dec - 2015 There will be another South Island Optimist coaching Clinic this December. It is held out of the YMCA Wainui Camp (Akaroa). Sailors have to be able to independently rig, launch and retrieve their boats and have some experience racing at a major regatta in Green or Open Fleet. There will be top NZ coaches to help improve the sailor’s skills and abilities. The cost is $350 per sailor and accommodation and all meals are supplied. 30 spaces available – official close off is 31 Oct 2015 but there might still be spots available. So far from QCYC the following sailors are going: Harry Edwards, Ella Wilcox, Jack Franklin, River Hopkins and maybe Suede Cowley. Registrations to Rebecca Baynes at [email protected]

Did you know… Talking with Flags Code Flag ‘S’

Shortened Course When displayed at a rounding mark the finish is between the nearby mark and the mast displaying the S flag. When displayed at a line that boats are required to cross at the end of each lap the finish is that line. When displayed at a gate the finish is between the gate marks.

Crew Wanted I am a member of Waikawa Boating Club and the new owner of a Davidson 37. I am looking for able crew for the 2016 Dry Hills New Year Regatta Jan 8, 9 , 10 at Waikawa Bay. The crew would need to be fit and keen to learn Keel boat sailing. I am of the opinion Dinghy sailors make the best sailors and try to sail like one myself (although that doesn’t always work in a 6 tonne boat ;) My back ground is Dingy and Trailer Yachts and made the move to Keel Boats this year. I would be most interested to hear from any keen sailor or recommendations.

Let me know if you have any news to share: Christel – [email protected] / [email protected]

This will be all for now…we will see you soon

Happy Sailing!
