M - Task: Eco-friendly Washing

We must change our habits Our washing machines need electricity. And electricity produces Co2. Co2 is bad because it creates a layer in the environment. The sun’s rays get in and then the heat can't get out so the planet keeps getting warmer. Then the glaciers and ice caps melt so the sea level goes up.

What can we do? ƒ

Use lower temperatures Simply switching from 40 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees uses around 40% less electricity! 60 degrees will kill dust mites. So switching from 95 degrees to 60 degrees helps the environment. Using modern detergents, you will get the same results as you would get from washing at a higher temperature.

ƒ

Use full loads only You should wait until you have filled your washing machine completely before doing a wash, or if washing can't be avoided doing smaller fills, use the eco- programme.

ƒ

Switch off Standby Never leave your washing machine on standby - this is the same for all the electrical appliances in your home.

ƒ

Eco-friendly drying Tumble-dryers use loads of electricity. The Environment Agency estimates that around £88 million are spent on using tumble dryers in the UK each year. Wherever possible, dry your washing outdoors! But if it's raining or just too cold outside, be sure to always spin clothes before putting them into the tumble dryer. For indoor drying a drying rack is an eco-friendly alternative.

M - Task: “Go Green!” Club

Our „Go Green!“ Club at Hilton Park School informs: Solar power and green energy for free!

Do you want to enjoy free energy? Then come and join our club! We’ve already created our own simple solar water heater – it is quite small and very inexpensive! Come and experiment and create your own water heater – the simplest heater ever at the cost of a lemonade or a bag of crisps! We always try to keep it simple – you just can’t go wrong! Take a closer look at what we’ve already designed and visit our exhibition in the school library: a great show that gives you a good idea of what you yourself could create at our club meetings.

Join us on Wednesday afternoon 15.30 – 17.30 in the Physics laboratory.

Our recycle/ reuse tip of the week

You love your Kellogg’s for breakfast? Then don’t throw away the bag out of the cornflakes packet. This plastic bag can have a second life when the cornflakes have been eaten!

Wash the bag and simply reuse it – • You can put food for the freezer in it! • Use it for tomatoes or lettuce to keep them fresh in the fridge! • Why not put cookies or biscuits in it that need to be transported to a party, bazaar or school fete?! Remember: Every little helps!

See you on Wednesday! Your school wants to start a “Go Green Club” and work together with other clubs, too – you want to be part of the club and have collected pieces of information on what different international schools do. Inform your friends at your school about the ideas of Hilton Park School.
