2015 – 2016 Theme Houses Jewish Culture Theme House at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life Abbe Center (764 South Main) Purpose:

The Jewish Culture Theme House at The Abbe Center for Jewish Life is a safe environment on campus in which to experience Jewish culture and religion through participation in Jewish holiday celebrations, learning, and customs. No religious affiliation is required for living in the house however residents are required to participate in JCTH and Abbe Center programming and activities. The Jewish Culture Theme House at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life contributes to the diversity of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and exemplifies the Colleges’ commitment to “inclusive excellence.”

Requirements:  Applicants must show an interest in Jewish culture and/or religion.  Applicants should be willing to participate in HWS Hillel and Abbe Center functions and programming.  Applicants must be willing to live in a kosher style arrangement.

Arts Collective Sheppard House (141 St. Clair) Purpose:

Meal Plan: 100 meals or higher

To establish a creative community of artists working towards making the Arts more predominant on campus.

Requirements:  Active, willing participant in both some form of the Arts.  Minimum 2.5 GPA.

Asian Languages and Cultures 412 Pulteney Purpose:

Meal Plan: Co-op

To provide a common living community for students who appreciate or are engaged in the study of Asian culture and languages and to foster interest and education related to Asian culture and language

Requirements:  Applicants should have a strong interest in Asian language or Asian culture.  Applicants should be racially tolerant

2015 – 2016 Theme Houses Pride House Farm House (169 St. Clair Street)

Meal Plan: Co-Op

Purpose: To create a safe space for individuals of the LGBTQIA community. Provide accurate and and updated information on queer life for all students. Engage in initiatives centered around queer life & safety on campus. Requirements:  2.5 GPA  Willingness to attend Pride events  Member of the LGBTQIA community (includes allies)

Geneva 2020 593 South Main Street Purpose:

Meal Plan: Partial Co-op

To serve as a space where those interested in community service, service-learning and civic engagement can unite to share ideas and work together on projects that benefit the public good. The house will also serve as a location where students, faculty, staff, classes and campus organizations can come together for events that seek to promote active citizenship through public service, learning about others, understanding diversity, and promoting unity and community spirit.

Requirements:  Participate in a minimum of 45 hours of volunteer service per semester.  Participate in 2 house-wide events per semester and take an active role in planning and implementation of Day of Service.  Students accepted to live in the house will be part of a partial co-op in order to prepare one meal per week as a house.

Stride House (Running House) 99 St. Clair Purpose:

Meal Plan: Co-op To create a collective space for runners of all abilities that are intereseted in raising monies and awareness for issues through various 5k races and other road race events. Members of the house will be committed to eating healthier.

Requirements:  2.5 GPA or higher  Interest in running (experience running is not needed)

Meal Plan: Co-op Purpose: To get more actively involved in the surrounding community volunteering with Geneva Neighborhoods society, Thrive to Survive and local schools. Requirements:

Have an interest in community outreach Willingness to be very active in the local Geneva community

Leaders of Sustainability House Sill House (710 S. Main) Purpose:

Meal Plan: Co-op

To provide educational opportunities for others to learn how to live more sustainably or in a more environmentally sensitive manner while serving as a role model living community.

Requirements:  House members will serve as a model and reminder to HWS and the Geneva community by signing a contract to engage in sustainable practices.

Hope House for Cancer McDaniels (645 S. Main) Meal Plan: Purpose:

100 meals or higher

To educate the HWS campus and the Geneva community on the importance of cancer awareness and the practice of healthy habits.

Requirements:  Applicants should have a positive outlook about cancer awareness and are motivated and optimistic about participating and planning many events related to this theme.  Members will sign a Contract Addendum that outlines the expectations and shows his/her commitment to the theme and rules of house.  Applicants must be in good standing with the HWS Dean’s Offices.  Minimum GPA 2.5

2015 – 2016 Theme Houses International House 408 Pulteney Purpose:

Meal Plan: Co-op

To promote multicultural living space for both international students and US students interested in foreign cultures.

Requirements:  GPA of at least 2.5  Applicants should be students who have spent a semester abroad or plan to spend a semester abroad, or have international experience.  Applicants should express an interest in other cultures as represented by their academic curriculum (language classes, major/minor, etc.)  Applications should be willing to provide their room for winter break housing for international students remaining on campus.

Heart House Hillcrest House (159 St. Clair)

higher Purpose:

To provide a fun and safe active social space for all students with am emphasis on a positive environment for William Smith women. Members of this house will work closely with the Joyful Heart Foundation and Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes.

Requirements:  Minimum 3.0 GPA  Interest in working for womens rights and respect.  Commitment to the betterment of social standards for all students.

Politics and Social Change Beta Sigma (756 S. Main) Purpose:

Meal Plan: Co-op

To promote an avenue through which to raise awareness of current political and social issues both within the campus and the greater Geneva community.

Requirements:  Minimum 2.5 GPA or higher

2015 – 2016 Theme Houses Living Above the Influence (Substance Free) Carr-McGuire (775 S. Main)

To provide a safe and substance free environment to students who are committed to a substance free lifestyle.

Requirements:  Applicants must be willing to commit and be held accountable to a substance-free lifestyles (alcohol, tobacco, and other nonprescription substances), attend and participate in meetings and events, and be in good academic and disciplinary standing.  Candidate must have an appreciation for HWS’s mission of Inclusive Excellence  Candidate must have a hunger to strive for success

Common House for Jackson, Potter, Rees 746 S. Main

Meal Plan: Co-op

Purpose: Promote community between traditional residence halls and small houses. As the program grows, each traditional residential area will be linked to a small house. Each Common House will provide social events and program opportunities for the “residence hall” neighbors. This collaborative environment is designed for students of those residence halls to “graduate” into their common house, and provide mentoring to students in the halls. Requirements:

To build community through food while supporting local agriculture and healthy living. The house will increase cultural and environmental awareness through a primary aspect of everyone’s lives, food. Requirements:  

133 St. Clair Street Purpose: To celebrate the pop culture of the roaring 20’s, swinging 30’s and 40’s, rockin’ 50’s, choice 60’s, groovy 70’s, ace 80’s, fly 90’s and the early 2000’s. Requirements:  GPA of 2.5 or higher  Interest in a variety of music genres, pop culture, dance and fashion.

615 South Main Street Purpose: To promote social equality for William Smith women through academics, athletics, community service, and clubs/organizations. Requirements:  

402 Pulteney Street Purpose: To bring awareness and understanding to our community regarding the struggles that individuals and families face as a result of a variety of illnesses.
