COACH DEVELOPMENT 2010

Introduction INTRODUCTION Football is a wonderful sport and as guardians of this our national game we hope you will continue to participate in and benefit from our renowned coach development programme. More than ever coach education should be embraced and viewed as an important way to take on fresh ideas which will ultimately help you create the best possible environment for your players to improve as well as grow as citizens. The game at grassroots continues to develop and as it does we must ensure our principles do not waiver. Football can provide so much, not just the joy and excitement from playing, but it can also address and improve health and social skills amongst others. Here and with relentless positivity we must inspire our young people and encourage in them the desire to improve individually and have the confidence to express themselves on and off the pitch. The role of the coach at all levels of our national game remains crucial and at whatever age and stage you coach, your contribution to the development of football and the opportunities you provide is inspiring. Whether you are stimulating aspiring young footballers to master the ball, helping talented performers in their pursuit of technical excellence or providing access and enjoyment in the amateur game your support to Scottish football is invaluable. Good luck and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our many courses or development in-services during 2010. Jim Fleeting Director of Football Development Scottish FA

SCOTTISH FA SOUTH WEST REGION INITIATIVES Initiatives Regional Squads The South West Regional Squads for both boys and girls operate from March to November each year and include players from Dumfries & Galloway, North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire. Regional Squads give players identified at a local level an opportunity to receive a high level football coaching and games programme with an introduction to Sports Science, including fitness testing, nutritional and hydration advice and lifestyle management. Girls Regional Squads operate at U15 and U19 level from March to November each year, providing a pathway to selection for the National Teams. Boys Regional Squads operate at U13 and U14 level, and explore the potential of players who are not registered with senior clubs. The squads are delivered in partnership with the Scottish Youth FA and the Scottish Schools FA, and are designed to help players to develop to their full potential. Parents are essential to the success of the programme, and are involved throughout.

Development 4’s The South West Region have supported the introduction of a Development 4’s Programme for young players in P1 & P2. Working in partnership with the leagues, this project has been a huge success in providing the younger player with an early introduction to a more structured football opportunity delivered within a safe and friendly environment.

Football Skills Challenge 2010 sees the role-out of the ground-breaking Scottish FA Football Skills Challenge. The Challenge sets out a series of exciting activities in which young players can measure their performance against the clock. Individuals, teams, clubs and whole associations can take on and run their own age specific competitions. In addition to competing against their peers, the most positive outcome for our game will be the increase in levels of structured practice as young players strive to improve their own personal scores. A Training Day for Coaches will be held at Toryglen Regional Football Centre on Sunday 7 February,10am to 1pm. Coaches who attend will all receive a free DVD and this resource contains all that is needed to deliver this exiting programme. Later in the year a Regional Football Skills Event (U11 to U14) will take place. Clubs will be asked to send forward players who will compete to become the South West Region Football Skills Champion. This event will happen over the weekend of 12 & 13 June at a venue to be confirmed nearer the time. TESTIMONIALS We started off as one team club and have grown more teams to become a seven age group set up and I don’t think it would have been possible if we hadn’t gone down the road of being involved with the Quality Mark programme. We have also developed our own third generation synthetic training area and clubhouse and being recognized as a Quality Mark Club has helped with this greatly. All of our coaches now must work through to level 3 on the SFA pathway and we have some onto level 4. Quality Mark has been a great thing for - Bonnyton Thistle FC. Quality Mark was an initiative that we were really keen to get involved with. It set out some nice clear standards for us to work to and helped us drive forward areas like child protection and first aid. Quality Mark also helped us to guide all of our coaches onto the correct pathway whether working with children or youths. We are currently close to achieving Community Level and we have enjoyed all sorts of benefits from being involved in the programme. - Heston Rovers FC We would like to thank the Scottish FA regional staff for their part in our recent achievement- especially being so flexible in getting the coaches through their required badges at times that suited our club volunteers. Now that we are certified at Standard Level we will be making full use of our new partnership relationship with the SFA and pushing on for recognition on a higher status. Quality Mark and all its benefits has been good news for our club. - Caledonian YFC

CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTDevelopment Continuous Professional

UEFA has issued a recent directive aimed at all member associations regarding the introduction of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for all Scottish FA Licence holders. As a consequence, this coming year will see the implementation of a new Professional Development programme for coaches. UEFA and the Scottish FA requires all new and existing Pro, A, B, Youth Licence and Youth Directors Award coaches to attain a minimum of 15 hours of CPD credit over a three year period to ensure their licence or award remains active. (Note: It is the intention of the Scottish FA to role out CPD for Goalkeeping and Advanced Children’s Licence holders in August 2010). The key principle behind this initiative is to ensure that all new and existing licensed coaches, who are actively coaching, have access to the most advanced and cutting edge techniques and information within their area of coaching expertise in the Adult, Youth, Children or Specialist Course Pathways. Whilst the Scottish FA will make every attempt to support coaches to carry out CPD, it is ultimately the sole responsibility of the individual to keep his/her licence/award qualification current and therefore recognised by the Scottish FA and UEFA. The following points outline the programme for 2010: • Licence holders of existing Adult, Youth and Youth Directors’ Award qualifications must register their commitment to CPD with the Scottish FA (see Appendix A – CPD Registration form) by 1 August 2010. Coaches in this position will have three years from the point of registration to attain the 15 hours CPD. • Candidates with both an Adult and a Youth orientated licence must carry out 15 hours of CPD for each licence to ensure they both remain current (i.e a total of at least 30 hours). • The Scottish FA will publish details as to how coaches may attain the 15 hours credit. Coaches who have registered will also be contacted with dates, venues and any additional costs of courses. • Candidates who register for CPD must pay an initial registration fee of £50 (inc VAT). An additional £20 (inc VAT) subscription fee must be paid thereafter for each year the coach is a member of the Scottish FA Professional Development for Coaches Programme. • In the event the three-year period has elapsed and the minimum requirements of CPD have not been met, the licence/award will cease to be recognised and the individual will be required to re-sit the full course.
