Page 2 EDITORIAL Welcome to the May issue of the South West Genealogist. With winter not far away now, it is becoming easier to stay home these cold nights, but usually once out for the evening, we find that we are glad we ventured forth. Try to make it out for our meeting nights at Flagstaff Hill, we all benefit in one way or another and end up having a good night out. With the annual general meeting coming up, please give a thought to standing for one of the positions available, it's a good way to learn more about the running of the group and you usually get first look at all the new resources we are rapidly acquiring. Perhaps two members would be happy to share a position, that way the work is halved. The 1995 Genealogical Research Directory is out now. I had an entry in the 1986 G.RD and up to late last year I was still receiving letters from fellow researchers out of that. I thought it was about time to go in for it again this year, and I've already had two letters from people researching the same name as myself and I only received my copy last week. For a cost of $33.50 (current price) for up to 15 names, which includes a copy of the book when it is published, it is well worth considering. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * THE AREA ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER Dear Members and Friends, We have welcomed some new members to our group and hope that we can help them along with their research. For Heritage Week, I helped members by giving them information about some people buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. The weather for both days of the walk was very inclement. I enjoyed the day and am at present collating the information - in case it is needed again. During the month, I had occasion to use the Index to Inquest Depositions (c1840 - 1957) and am pleased with the ease with which I found the required inquest. The one I Was looking for was in 1931 and of course the cause of death was noted. There are some sad stories to be found in these indexes. Do not forget to check these out - just in case. We are looking forward to hearing Mrs Mary Bennett speak at our meeting on some aspects of life (education) in Woolsthorpe. Till next month Regards to all, Marie Boyce, Area Administrator * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONDOLENCES Our members were saddened to hear of the death of our friend Gloria Van Baaran on the 16th April 1995. Gloria had been a member for about four years, and during that time, she had been our Treasurer for approximately 18 months. She made her last visit to our Library on Wednesday 12th April, and little did we think then that she had only a few days left in her life. Gloria was a friendly lady, ready to help when required, and was very kind to me when I was ill. She will be sadly missed by all, Peace be with you Gloria Marie Boyce
