An Afternoon with Mike: Together, We’re Even Better!

PRESENTER: Rich Neureuther, FBI Special Agent – Retired, Milwaukee, WI

Retired agent Richard Neureuther will share lessons learned during his 30-year career with the FBI and show how these skills can be put to use in your everyday life. In this twopart session he’ll talk about teamwork, how to get through difficult times, what it takes to achieve goals, and how to handle criticism. He’ll also provide insights and practical skills for detecting whether someone is being deceptive.

Part 1: Stories to Inspire (9:40) During his years of service in the FBI, Rich saw the best and the worst of humanity, illustrated by stories of an undercover assignment in which he nearly lost his life, and his work as a debriefer with survivors of the September 11 attack on the Pentagon. Rich will share a graphic visual story of the attack and its aftermath, including a survivor’s tale that is chilling, touching and heroic. He describes how commitment to core values such as duty, trust and courage can anchor engagement in the workplace and in life. Part 2: Are They Lying to You? Security Awareness 101

An Effective Safety Campaign: The Cornerstone to Success

PRESENTER: Stephan Salmonson, PPS, President, PROtective Services, Inc., Mora, MN

PRESENTER: Dale Lesinski, DiVal Safety, Buffalo, NY

Often, companies don't have a lack of desire to take their safety culture from bad to good, or good to great, they just lack an effective plan to get them there. Building on concepts from the "Safe 4 the Right Reasons" presentation, this session teaches you how to create an effective safety campaign that not only changes how you look at your own safety, but also achieves staying power.

Did OSHA Just Ban Drug Testing and Safety Incentives? PRESENTER: Tom Slattery, CSP, ARM, Raven Industries, Sioux Falls, SD

You may have heard that the updates to OSHA’s recordkeeping rules issued in May will require many companies to report their OSHA 300 log information online starting in 2017. But did you know that the new rules also make it very difficult to have a traditional safety incentive program or conduct postaccident drug testing and be in compliance? This session will provide an overview of the new rules and explain what types of incentives and drug testing are allowed under the new rules that will be enforced starting 11/1/16.

You’re On a Team, You May as Well Be Good at It PRESENTER: Kit Welchlin, President, Welchlin Communication Strategies, Minneapolis, MN

Working together is a difficult, complicated communication task. Working well together is a necessity. Learn how to participate effectively and build cohesiveness on a team in this fast-paced and activity-filled program.

Care Pathways for Spine-Related Injuries PRESENTER: Scott Munsterman, Best Practices Academy,

Brookings, SD

Health care costs are directly associated with the care pathway the patient chooses or is directed to early on in the delivery process. This reactionary approach has been costly. Developing competencies and implementing population health programs requires significant effort and takes time. Key success factors include implementing new care models, aligning providers in care coordination, and implementing good technology. Spine related conditions top the list of overall costs to employers. Learn how you can save costs and improve outcomes for them.

“Wow!” “Great!” “Everyone could use this!” are typical reactions to this popular program. Topics include identifying and reducing security risks; reactions during duress; evidence gathering/documentation; effective signage; interagency reporting; the ABCs of security; three layers of security; robbery survival; response to angry, shouting and armed co-workers/clients; explosives recognition; security equipment (cameras); Emergency Response Procedures (ERP) and policy/protocols. This program is a must!

11:10 a.m.– noon The Glass Ain’t Half Full, It’s Just Too Big PRESENTER: Mark Mayfield, Mayfield Presentations, Oro Valley, AZ

This is a humorous approach to a very serious subject and emphasizes that creativity is the key component in managing change. Learn change theory and creative exercises in this upbeat, fast-paced program that will leave you laughing and provide you with change management skills.

Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace PRESENTERS: Jeff Shultz and David Kroon, Attorneys, Woods, Fuller, Shultz & Smith P.C., Sioux Falls, SD

This session will provide an overview of the critical aspects and considerations of implementing a drug testing program in your workplace, and the implications of prescription drugs in the workplace. These legal experts will also provide front line supervisors and safety managers with practical information regarding when and why drug testing should be completed and how to avoid running afoul of laws protecting employees when it comes to drug testing and prescription drug use.

Dealing With Difficult People: How To Work With Bullies, Tyrants and Jerks PRESENTER: Kit Welchlin, President, Welchlin Communication Strategies, Minneapolis, MN

It’s estimated that 20 percent of our population can be classified as difficult people. No matter where you go, there will be at least one to deal with. Learn to identify types of difficult people, and strategies for controlling your emotions and responding appropriately.

SAY IT WITH HUMOR Luncheon Speaker: Mark Mayfield, Mayfield Presentations Known as “The Corporate Comedian,” Mark Mayfield has merged his corporate background as a lobbyist and his comedic background as a nightclub performer to create an extremely unique style. He has shared the stage with Peter Frampton, Colin Powell, and Bob Newhart, and has introduced the President of the United States. Raised on a Kansas farm, he received two degrees from Kansas State University and served as National President of the Future Farmers of America. From comedy shows to seminars, Mark’s philosophy is simple: say it with humor and people will take the message home. A national convention planner recently called Mark “one of the very few, really funny, inspiring men in America today.” (Mark’s mom also said that once after a small bribe.) 8 | SOUTH DAKOTA SAFETY & HEALTH CONFERENCE
