A preacher named Graves was working in the Graceland Township, Codington County area trying to get a church established. He never did live long enough to see his project completed. In 1890 he died and was buried close to where the church was being built. The church was completed in 1892. Following his burial other early settlers were buried in that location which was then recognized as the Unknown Photo Graceland Cemetery. In 1904 the trustees of the Graceland Church of the United Brethren in Christ ordered that cemetery lots be bought by those interested. The last regular church service was held in 1947 and the parishioners built a church in Garden City, thus dissolving the Graceland Congregation. In the 1950’s because of road construction, the church was moved a short distance to the southwest into the cemetery. In 1975 trees were planted on the south and west side of the cemetery. In 1975 a Graceland Cemetery Board was formed. This board consisted of Albert Scott, Harold Hansen, Anna David, Elinor Flury and Raymond Christensen. In 1978 an Ornamental Graceland Cemetery sign was put up in the SE corner of the cemetery. A restoration of the church was begun in 1999 and completed in 2000. This consisted of a new roof, new ceiling and necessary improvements on the interior of the church. An “open Photo by Erland Carlson
house” was held to view the project which many volunteers labored to make the project a success. The guest book shows that hundreds of people have visited the restored church. Regular meetings of the Cemetery Association are held twice a year to take care of business of the church and cemetery. The present officers of the association are Lloyd Becker, Don Nelson, Harold Hansen, Todd McGillivary, Raymond Christensen, and Dennis Eck.
