South Dakota High School Coaches Association Virg Polak NHSACA President 2010 National Conference in Sioux Falls (reprinted by permission from the Aberdeen American News)

Virg Polak follows in the footsteps of other South Dakota coaches as he begins a one-year term as president of the National High School Coaches Association. Polak, a Tulare native who now teaches and coaches at Watertown, took over the reins of the national organization at its annual convention in June after spending three seasons as a vice president. He will complete his five-year commitment by serving one additional year as the past president. Other South Dakota coaches who held the national presidency include Max Hawk of Yankton and Jerry Miller and Wayne Carney of Sioux Falls. Carney now works as the executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. I came up through the ranks, said Polak, 55. I’ve been going to the national convention since 1985. Some of the other coaches from South Dakota started going and that got me going way back when. It’s been like a family reunion every year. One of the perks of Polak’s position as national president is that his home state of South Dakota will host the national coaches convention in June 2010 in Sioux

Falls. Polak, who spent two years in Summit and the last 32 in Watertown, has served as an assistant coach for many years. He used that experience to spearhead a movement to add a national girls’ and boys’ assistant coaching award to his organization’s honors. Fittingly, the first national assistant award will be announced at next summer’s national meeting hosted by Polak and South Dakota. One of the things they gave me as a vice president was to get working on the assistant coach honor, said Polak, the current secretary of the South Dakota football coaches association and past president of the state coaches association. It was a long process but we finally got it in. The agenda for the national meeting also includes the national hall of fame luncheon, the national coach of the year banquet, a Whopper hamburger feed sponsored by Burger King and a speech by former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and state representative Tom Osborne at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes luncheon. It’s just a great opportunity for people to get to meet different people from around the United States. There are so many great leaders around the country that have gone before me. I’m

humbled by that group, Polak said. A three sport athlete at Tulare High School, Polak played football at South Dakota State. It is now his turn to shine a spotlight on South Dakota. South Dakota is thought of very highly at the national level because of our past leadership people, said Polak. A hard working ethic from the Midwest has been one of our trademarks. The last time the national coaches convention was held in South Dakota the annual all-star games were moved to Sioux Falls. This time the all-star games and state coaching clinics and meetings will remain in Aberdeen from July 27-29.

Message from the President: (Deb Thill) It was great to see so many coaches at our clinic this summer in Aberdeen. I hope you all learned something to use this year. The sessions were great as well as the all star games. See you next summer. Sioux Falls is

also hosting the National High School Coaches Clinic in June. Look for more details soon. I hope everyone is off to a great start of the fall season. As my children are getting older, the realization that people other than my husband and myself have a profound impact on the development of children has hit home. Thank you for providing student-athletes with positive role models and nurturing them to be the best they can be! You

all deserve many thanks from parents for doing all that you do. As this new school year starts, I would like to challenge our membership to make an effort to be active in this great coaches organization. Find an officer or a Board Member to find out how. Encourage your coaching staff to be members. There are so many positives in belonging this group! I wish each of you the best of luck as your season gets under way!

Message from the President Elect: (Bill Weber) I hope this note finds you ready to start a productive and positive 20092010 sch ool / athletic year. If you are not already done so, I invite you to seriously consider becoming an active member of the South Dakota High School Coaches Association (SDHSCA). We have a great association in South Dakota and it is an honor to serve as Presidentelect. We need to keep promoting our organization and get more coaches involved; we can all make a difference! If

you are already a member of the association, we thank you for your ongoing support of the SDHSCA. We encourage you to invite those coaches in your school system that are not members, to please consider this professional opportunity. Membership is open to any coaches in your school system. Members of SDHSCA are reminded to nominate coaches in your specific sport for consideration to be honored as Coach of the Year. Furthermore, members are encouraged to actively participate in voting for Coaches of the Year as ballots become available. In addition, please consider serving as a regional representative on the Board of Directors when vacancies occur. Remember to join your individual

sports groups after YOU have joined our SDHSCA. Please keep all of our troops and their families in your prayers as we have members of our organization who have served or are currently serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. We all pray that they will have a safe and speedy return home. Please remember to patronize our sponsors whenever possible as they are very generous and an important part of our organization. If you would like to learn more about the SDHSCA, access our website at www.sdhsca.k12.sd.us. I extend my sincere best wishes as you embark upon this 2009-2010 school year.

Notes from the Executive-Director: • Please take time to read through this newsletter as it contains a lot of information. • We have entered into a contract with MaxPreps which is a company that compiles statistics nationwide in football, volleyball, boys basketball and girls basketball. The more participation we get from South Dakota coaches the more revenue we generate for our organization. It takes only a few minutes after each game to enter your statistics and if you are currently using DakStats you can download in a matter of seconds. If you have any questions please contact me. • Thanks to the generosity of our Lifetime members and Past Presidents we have given the SD Special Olympics a $3,000 scholarship. Congratulations and thank you. • A special “Thank You” to the college and university athletic directors for

their participation in the SDHSCA. They include: South Dakota State University, Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, University of Sioux Falls, Augustana College, Dakota Wesleyan University, Black Hills State University, Mount Marty College, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. • Our membership year runs from August 1 through July 31. Encourage your fellow coaches, at all levels, to join our professional organization. Among the benefits are a one million dollar liability policy and a $5,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy. Information on both of these policies can be found on page 3. Dues are $40. • Membership cards are still good for most college athletic events with a few exceptions. Please contact the athletic office prior to attending to

find out further information and to let them know that you will be attending. Thank you to the college athletic departments for their excellent cooperation. • Our newest corporate sponsor is Eide Bailly. They are a CPA and Business Advisors firm based in Sioux Falls. For the past two years they have done the tax returns for both the SDHSCA and the Foundation. • A special thank you to Jon Sogn, a lawyer with Lynn, Jackson, Schultz & Lebrun of Sioux Falls, who donated his legal services to update and revise the South Dakota Coaches’ Foundation Articles of Incorporation and By -laws. • The Foundation Board of Directors would encourage everyone to make a donation, no matter how big or small, to the Foundation. There is a place at the bottom of the membership application to do this.

South Dakota Coaches Foundation: “The Gift that keeps on Giving” by Wayne Carney, Past President .When we as former and current coaches sit and contemplate on how we can give back to a profession that has given each of us so much, we may sometimes overlook the obvious. As we think about the many and varied paths that brought us into the education and coaching professions we often are reminded of how our parents, a certain teacher/ coach/director, a contest official, or an older sibling that was already in the profession may have influenced our career paths. While we can all be reminded of numerous occasions that bring both “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” we can not overlook the positive influences we have imparted on the student athletes that have touched our lives as well as the many positive memories that made our career choice a rich and positive experience. With that being said, it begs the question: “How can we give back to a profes-

sion that has given so much to us?” I would like to suggest that the South Dakota Coaches Foundation (SFCF) is just that vehicle. The Foundation was originally established to provide a tax deductible means for people to give back to a profession, teaching/coaching, in such a way as to honor someone for providing life changing experiences to them. As an example, when my father passed away several years ago, our family received numerous monetary donations. Both my mom and my dad followed my teaching and coaching career very closely—always wondering how we did on game nights and never missing a state tournament in which the Hi-Pointers or Chargers were a participant. When it came time to make a decision as to which charitable group/ organization would receive the monetary gifts, it was decided that the South Dakota Coaches Foundation was an appropriate recipient as both my mom and my dad were very encouraging of my career

choice and were very supportive of the values that were taught through educationally based activities programs. My wife, Carol, and I continue to make contributions to the SDCF anytime a close family member/friend passes away or as a means of honoring someone on a special occasion such as their birthday or anniversary. In this way we are giving back to a profession that has given so much to our family. As a former coach and educator, as well as a parent of three children who participated in both fine arts and athletic activities, I would like to encourage all coaches to think first of the SDCF when it comes time to remember a lost loved one or as a means to honor a former coach or teacher who is still living and who was so instrumental in our career choice. The SDCF, through its charitable gifts and contributions, is a positive way to “Give a Gift That Keeps on Giving.”
