Session Descriptions! Soft Skills for Interpreters:! Ever leave a professional encounter feeling that you were not heard? Ever wish you could change someone’s behavior only to have it blow up in your face? Ever wish you were more charismatic or persuasive? If you find your personal encounters (professional and personal) could use a jump-start, then this workshop is for you. Learn how to communicate more effectively in difficult situations, how to express appreciation in a way that will be impactful, and how to be that team that everyone wants to work with and that interpreter that Deaf consumers love.! Interpreting for God:! Workshop is designed for interpreters who do limited or extensive interpreting in religious settings… particularly in the southern churches. Sessions will include principles for understanding and interpreting complex religious concepts, 7 skills necessary for effective interpreting, and use of visual imagery in both scriptures and song.! Linguistics of Interpreting:! This six-hour workshop teaches interpreters how meaning is constructed in conversation and how differences in cognitive schema across languages complicate the interpreting task.  Participants look at the semantics and pragmatics of ASL and English to see where there are similarities and differences.Techniques for bridging the linguistic gaps are discussed and applied in group work. This hands- on workshop prepares the interpreter to seriously look at meaning- making through lecture, discussion, practice and with the help of a few brilliant observations by the characters of Seinfeld and When Harry Met Sally.!

Here’s a fun fact: Callie’s initial undergraduate degree major was geology because she always thought that some field of science was her calling. As it turns out, providing fair communication access to an under-served population pulled her in another direction. Since 2004, Callie has enthusiastically served the state of South Carolina as a free-lance community interpreter in a wide variety of settings.!
