F ROM THE P RESIDENT …. I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season surrounded by family and friends! As I write this note to you, it’s a mere 36 degrees outside. A good reason to stay inside and get some work done! And, of course, spend some time in my quilt room. This year has been a very busy one for me already. In addition to all of the post-holiday clean up, quilt guild meetings and work days, and finishing some work in the quilt room, I just got back from a quilting get away with fabulous quilting friends. We had a great time and learned a lot! One of the things I learned was how to use a heat gun on fabric! I hope you are planning to join us for our Annual Spring Meeting in Spartanburg on Saturday, March 19th. Karla Alexander is our speaker and will be teaching classes on Friday, March 18th and Sunday, March 20th. At Saturday’s meeting we will be approving our budget, some revisions to the By-laws and electing board members. Our fall retreat committee, chaired by Cheryl Keith, is planning several changes to the retreat to provide you with a fresh new experience. You’ll hear more from Cheryl about their changes at the Annual Spring Meeting and in the months to come. Be safe. Be happy.

You will be looking at your stash in a whole new way and actually start using your fabric rather than just admiring it! Enjoy the confidence you'll gain exploring traditional and untraditional quilt methods by adding your own twist! Tips will inspire excitement, creating unexpected surprises ready to be quilted into your next project! Challenge yourself to take small or bold steps as you learn to work with your fabric and create your own methods and styles. A trunk show with lots of and lots of quilts will illustrate many different styles of quilts as well as subjects discussed. Friday Class March 18, 016 - Blue Moon - $45 Finished Size: 60" x 80" Finished Block Size:10" x10" This is a fun design as you go quilt! You can audition the moon colors and sizes along the way, providing the opportunity to make changes well into the project. Follow the pattern exactly or make it your own! Easy tips and techniques will inspire you along the way to create your own awesome quilt! LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE: Beginner to Intermediate FABRIC TIP: Choose bright contrasting prints without a lot of pattern so that they appear as solid fabrics from a distance.

Page 4

Sunday Class March 20, 2016 – Shattered - $45 Finished Size: 63" x 84" Each block for Shattered begins with a 6-part center block, which is then finished with a pieced frame work. The blocks are cut as directed in class with several variations as we go. You'll learn several options as you sew such as how to splice in additional splits, totally modify the block and/or change the number of actual pieces in each block. Sew exactly by the book or come ready to change it up making it your own design as well as learn awesome techniques along the way. LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE: Beginner to Advanced FABRIC TIP: Choose a focal color for the middle of each block then a second color for the frame. Subtle batiks, tone on tone or, other prints that appear as a solid from a distance work well for this quilt. Once you have the center and frame picked out, choose a contrasting print to separate all the pieces. Reception Friday evening, March 18, 2016 6:30 pm At the Hampton Inn and Suites meet and greet Karla Alexander. She will be signing books and selling her notions and rulers. We are looking forward to great programs this year by our members as well as outside guests. In January we hosted Teresa Coolidge, from Lexington, who did a wonderful presentation on battings. She has done research on some of the more popular battings and shared what she learned about shrinkage, quilting, loftiness, etc. In March, we are looking forward to hosting Karla Alexander for two days. On the 15th she will be doing a workshop entitled “Purple Haze” and on the 16th, her lecture entitled “Lift the Quilts out of Your Stash”. In April Linda Tripp, a guild member, will do a presentation on curved piecing. In addition to having great programs, we consider philanthropy to be a big part of our guild. Last year we presented over 60 lap quilts to the residents at Quillen Manor nursing home in Fountain Inn and participated in making quilts for the Jamie Treehouse project in Laurens County. This program, sponsored by Hospice House of Laurens County, was designed to present a quilt to children who have lost a close loved one such as a mother or father. This year we are once again looking forward to making quilts for this project as well as for the Generations Home for boys. I think every quilter in the room went home with a new opinion of the units in a quilt! It was quite refreshing to hear her in person. Thank you to all who came to take classes with us from all over the state! We had people from every District and even from out of State! Peach Patchers Quilt Guild, Greer, has new officers for 2016: President, Martha White, [email protected], Vice-President, Sandy Bridwell, Secretary, Leigh Radlein, and Treasurer, Joanna Renkowski. Lake Marion Piecemakers, Elloree/Santee. Our President for this year is Joan Rourk, this is the second year of a two year term. I’m glad to say all officer positions are filled. The YLI tour through the thread plant in Rock Hill was informative and enlightening. The machinery for winding and other processes - some are almost 100 years old and others are new with computer guided set-ups. This thread made from long staple cotton wound on very large cones, arrives from Egypt ready for dyeing, and then wound on spools to make the wonderful thread for us quilters. Anyone may order thread through the Website for YLI. The class with Liz Florom produced a very nice colorful stained glass design, and it would make a very attractive quilt. High Fives to our great members and good cooks for the delightful covered dish luncheon to celebrate Christmas. We also selected the favorite block from the blocks made by members - Evelyn Buck made an attractive applique design and was the favorite. The winner of all the blocks was Leona Wood. Coastal Carolina Quilters, Surfside Beach. As we approach the last few months of the year, we are looking forward to the holidays, when we visit our families or they come to the beach to visit us. November and December we start to see our returning snow birds! It will be nice to see our northern friends once more. Our November meeting, we invited Jennifer Amor to our meeting for a trunk show and lecture. With over 30 years of designing and teaching, we enjoyed a wide array of her beautiful works! Next month will be our holiday luncheon. We started January with one of our favorite teachers, Tina Roth. Tina bought many of her wonderful pieces for our group to see. She also taught a class the Indigo Braid. Grand Strand Quilters, Myrtle Beach, have had a very busy fall and winter with classes, comfort quilts, and holiday projects. We were happy to welcome our snowbirds back to the group. Horry County / Conway Quilters Guild, Conway. Winding down the busy year we have had and gearing up for another! The beginning of November we hosted a QOVF ceremony, honoring 11 veterans from the Conway area. It was a large celebration, as it ended up with standing room only, plus it was covered by WPDE15 news! Our November “1st Annual JELLYROLL Race” was held, and the winner was Carol Leach! She received the trophy and will relinquish it at the next race, if we crown a new winner!!

Our annual luncheon with our sister group from Little River was a fun time with lots of good food and fellowship! We always look forward to the block challenge and to see what creativity is shown! The 2015 Challenge was FROZEN, and it was a lot of fun! Ginger Monaghan shared the challenge for 2016, “America, the Beautiful.” We finished our year with a guild meeting and lunch, revealing a new challenge to do over the holiday season! The “Ugly Fat Quarter” challenge was presented by Karen Morey, and results are to be revealed in January! We surpassed our charitable goals this year, donating 255 Quiltlets to CMC; 216 Award Cases to QOVF/MBShorebirds; 61 Fidget Quilts to 3 local Assisted living facilities; 16 quilts and cases to Sea Haven/Project Lighthouse; and 45 beds to Horry County Animal Shelter! We have a busy 2016 planned! Peaceful Piecemakers, Darlington, are continuing with our missions. This involves local and foreign missions, totaling eighteen to twenty. Our newest mission is with the Felician Sisters located in Kingstreet, S.C. This is a Catholic mission for the homeless, soup kitchen and after school assistance for children. Sandra Baker provided a very informative and entertaining program on crazy quilts. Following the meeting, Sandra taught a crazy quilting class. We’re looking forward to a lecture by Jennifer Amor in February. Please come and visit our cabin at the Civil War Reenactment at the Columns, 4789 East Old Marion HWY, Florence. Weather permitting we will be displaying quilts and demonstrating quilting techniques March 12 and 13 from 10am to 4pm.

Swan Lake Quilters, Sumter. At our January meeting, this year’ Challenge Quilt for the Swan Lake Quilt Guild in Sumter was announced as a “Monochromatic Quilt.” Using paint chips from Lowes, quilters drew their colors out of a bag and got their first look at their challenge. (If they really “hated” the color they drew, they had one “do-over” to try for a better color.) Between now and November, the quilter will create a quilt of their own choosing, at least 36”x36”, using just that color but with the opportunity to add one neutral (black, white, gray…) OR one multi-color. But only one OR the other, not both. As an added incentive, there are monetary prizes - $75 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd and $25 for 3rd. Looks like fun and that there will be lots of interesting quilts turned in in November. Maye River Quilt Guild, Bluffton, celebrated their first anniversary with a luncheon in January. The guild has grown from 29 charter members to 70+ in the first year, with never a month passed that we do not increase membership. January’s program was a “small quilt” show, “It’s a Small World After All.” “Best of Show” was determined with voting by quarters and Pat Black was the winner. Quarter voting plus a beautiful display of raffle baskets netted the guild enough money to reach the guild’s goal for the year. Jo Rossini, Fundraising Chair, and her committee have done an outstanding job, including preparing our first annual quilt for raffle. Upcoming programs include a demonstration of five easy quilts from the Missouri Star Quilt Company in February, demonstrations of five tools, five specialty rulers and five embellishments in March and a parade of purses in April. MRQ will host Mary Huey for “How I Learned to Color” in May. Mary will conduct a lecture and two workshops. On the community service home front, we have finished an 18 month period helping Osprey Village raise money, including $800 they earned on a guildmade quilt. The guild also made and is donating a

Sea Island Quilters, Beaufort, are looking forward to another exciting year. We have already enjoyed a wonderful presentation on Zentangles, a relaxing drawing method that brings out the artist in everyone. Additionally, we have had an excellent Saturday workshop conducted by member Sharon Kimber using the Cozy Quilts Designs Simple Simon pattern. This is a wonderful pattern for Jelly rolls or to simply use up scraps. For the rest of the 2016 we are looking forward to a program and workshop presented by Susan Edmonson, a quilter and fiber artist who combines quilting and mixed media with Victorian craft. We are also looking forward to a workshop by Robin from Sew Much More in Savannah, Georgia, who will show us the latest take on Adult Coloring. We will use crayons to “tint” our fabric and embellish it with hand embroidery.

Karen Kirkland announced that District V representative, Gloria Popa, has resigned and has been replaced by Frances Kelley. Discussion was had regarding changes to the by-laws. Article III Section I is proposed to be changed to include the Chairperson of Spring into Summer as an appointed member of the board. It was moved and seconded that the Spring Meeting and Fall Retreat Registrars should be combined into one position simply called Registrar and that it will be an appointed position rather than elected. Article III Section II of the Bylaws is to be changed to remove the Spring Meeting and Fall Retreat Registrars from the list of elected officers as that position will become an appointed one rather than an elected position. Karen Kirkland asked that all board members review their job descriptions and update them as needed. Vice President – Veronica Moriarty. Veronica discussed potential speakers for the 2017 Spring Meeting. Treasurer – Karen Preston. The new mileage rate for 2016 will be $0.27 per mile. Newsletter – Karen Kirkland for Evelyn Richards. Evelyn asks that District Representatives send just one email with all of their information. She also requests that the District number be identified in the email and that the full name and city of guilds be included. Therefore, please submit your articles to Evelyn by February 1st. Registrar – Darlene Roberts.
