LIVERY COMPANY MEDALLIONS

1879 The following 14 lots comprise the most comprehensive collection of London livery company medallions we have ever had the pleasure to offer. We have sold a couple of these lots in previous auctions, but this group – assembled by the late Terry Pepperell – contains many items that we have not seen before, and may not again The Livery Companies of the City of London comprise both ancient and modern trade and professional associations, almost all of which are styled as “The Worshipful Company of...” for the relevant trade or profession. Many of the original companies were established by royal charter, though this is not essential for the founding of livery companies. London’s medieval corporations originally developed as Guilds and were responsible for regulating their respective trades e.g. wages, working conditions and professional standards. In most cases the existence of these guilds meant that no workers in these occupations could practice in the City of London unless they became members of the relevant guild. A large number of the more traditional livery companies have evolved into educational and charitable foundations (such as the Haberdashers’ Company and London Longbow Makers’ Company), whereas most of the ‘modern’ companies such as the Worshipful Company of Engineers and the City of London Solicitors’ Company set educational and professional standards for admission to practice (and membership), sometimes offering their own professional training courses. From 1746 to 1925 no new companies were established until the Master Mariners’ Company was established in 1926 - all new companies since this time are known as ‘modern livery companies’. There are currently around 110 such companies in existence. In 1515, the Court of Alderman of the City of London set an order of precedence for the 48 livery companies then in existence; with the order based on the company’s economic or political power, creating the ‘Great Twelve’ City livery companies that have held their positions ever since. Newly liveried companies are now ranked by seniority The Worshipful Company of Carpenters prize medallion 54mm in gilt, reverse engraved “F.Bentley Trades Training School 1906” and edge engraved Carpenters Class” EF The history of the Carpenters’ Company goes back over 700 years, with the first written reference to a master carpenter in the City of London’s records of 1271. The company received its first royal charter in 1477 Est. $90

1880 The Worshipful Company of Clothworkers uniface medallion 58mm in gilt; The Worshipful Company of Turners prize medallion 32mm in uncertain metal on ribbon and bar, reverse engraved “S.W.Hymans Freedom and Livery 1921”; The Worshipful Company of Vintners uniface medallion 39mm in uncertain metal with reverse engraved “Willm Willis”; The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths 650th Anniv 1977 medallion 37mm in gilt; and The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers modern medallion 39mm in gilt, the first aUnc with most attractive crest and matte finish, the second EF, the third VF, remainder Unc (5 medallions) The Clothworkers’ Company was incorporated under royal charter in 1528 from the amalgamation of the Fullers (incorporated 1480) and the Shearmen (incorporated 1508) The Turners’ Company’s origins date back to the first reference to a London turner in 1189. The company received its royal charter in 1604 The Vintners’ Company received its first charter in 1363 and is one of the ‘Twelve Great’ livery companies The Goldsmiths’ Company, which originates from the 12th Century, received its royal charter in 1327 and is another of the ‘Twelve Great’ livery companies The Ironmongers’ Company received its royal charter in 1463 and is another of the ‘Twelve Great’ livery companies. They were formerly known as the Ferroners Est. $150

1881 The Worshipful Company of Coach Makers (sic) and Coach Harness Makers award medallion 58mm in bronze, reverse expertly engraved to “Benjn Godfrey Windus, Father of the Compy 1865” lightly toned gEF with lustrous fields, most interesting The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. The Company received its royal charter from Charles II on 31st May 1677. Under this charter no one could lawfully carry out the trade of coachmaker or coach harness maker within 20 miles of London without being a member of the Company. Whilst the ‘trade’ has become somewhat obsolete, the Company’s attention has been drawn to the promotion of British industry throughout the world, particularly in the encouragement and support of British automotive and aerospace (coaches of the air) companies. Ironically, the Company offered its first prizes for design and good workmanship in 1865 (Benjamin) Godfrey Windus (1790-1867) was a coachmaker and merchant who lived in Tottenham and was master of the Company in 1826. He was also well known as a leading art collector of his time, with a large and important collection of Turner watercolours and David Wilkie drawings amongst his collection. He was also a supporter of the Pre-Raphaelites Est. $75

1885 The Haberdashers Aske’s Hampstead School prize medallion 55mm in hallmarked silver, reverse engraved within school’s name “Founded 1690/Presented by the School Governors to F.C.Mason 1900-1908” EF and a fascinating item The institution is a private school for boys and girls aged 4 to 18 – it was recently nominated as the best school in the country. It was initially founded by Royal Charter as a result of a legacy by Robert Aske to establish an alms-house for 20 poor members of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers (one of the ‘Great Twelve’ livery companies). The school was originally established for boys only, but girls were admitted under the same charter in 1875. 1882 The (Worshipful) Company of Cordwainers London unawarded Exhibition 1895 prize medallion 45mm in gilt, aUnc with near flawless matte fields and finish The first written reference to the Guild of Cordwainers is in a document dated 1272, and the company received its royal charter in 1439. The name ‘cordwainer’ derives from skilled tradespeople who worked with the finest leather of the time that came from Cordoba in Spain – a goatskin that became known as cordwain. Over time skilled leatherworkers in other fields formed their own guilds and associations, leaving shoemakers to retain the name of cordwainers Est. $75

1887 The Worshipful Company of Musicians of London medallion 54mm in silver edge impressed “Steuart Bedford 7th November 1961” aUnc and a very appealing design The Musicians Company is the only City of London Livery Company devoted to the performing arts. Members are performers, composers, instrument makers, teachers, administrators and music lovers. The company, through its administration of charitable funds, supports young musicians at the start of their careers through the provision of prizes and scholarships, performance opportunities and medals that recognise excellence and achievement Est. $75

He also commissioned numerous works of chamber music from emerging and leading British composers of the time. He endowed the Cobbett Medal in 1924, an award that is still presented to this day. The reference to the award mentions that it was silver gilt and to be given annually to a musician who made a significant contribution to the area of chamber music The award recipient, Thomas Frederick Dunhill (1877-1946) was an English composer and writer on music subjects Est. $75

1889 The Worshipful Company of Painters-Stainers medallion 47mm in silver, reverse engraved “Harry Esau Prize for Period Decoration 1935” otherwise unattributed, lightly toned Unc with flashy fields The company was formed in 1502 by the amalgamation of companies in existence before 1283 Est. $75

Page 98 Image viewable on website www.downies.com/auctions

1891 The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights medallion or badge 31mm in silver or silvered with pin back and suspender for hanging with ribbon (included) buckled but nice all the same There are no records on the origins of the Company though the first recorded references to Citizen & Shipwright date from the 13th Century when there were groups around London Bridge and Thames Street in Petit Wales. Formal recognition as a major craft occurred in the 15th Century. The company itself has not received a royal charter as maritime trade by definition was never confined within the boundaries of the London ‘square mile’. Instead, a corporate body of London shipwrights grew over time. The company’s status is considered as being incorporated “by prescription”. Est. $75

1892 An unusual 2-piece hollow ornament or decoration 65x49mm in silver, obverse with crest and motto “By Faith I Obtain” reverse engraved “H.C.Walker/ Admitted/To the Freedom and Livery/9th April 1908/Edward Terry Master/John Tho. Ashby Upper Warden/ W.D.Barnett Renter Warden/Sir John Bell/Lord Mayor/Elected on Court/15th July 1915” with two pinhole piercings for suspension. A most unusual piece that defies this cataloguer’s research efforts, though it is highly likely to be related to a City of London livery company, VF and most interesting Ex Terry Pepperell Collection Est. $100
