MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

THE 2013-2014 SEASON marked the end of an era. It began with the announcement of Managing Director Benjamin Moore’s decision to retire and ended with the unexpected passing of Artistic Director Jerry Manning. Both men were beloved leaders, generous mentors and fierce advocates for the theatre; it was their shared legacy. In their final season together, both Ben and Jerry shied away from conversations about their combined past, preferring to always talk about the theatre’s future. Nowhere was that more apparent than in their mutual enthusiasm for the Rep’s New Play Program. Fittingly, the 2013-2014 season showcased three world premieres from Northwest playwrights—Elizabeth Heffron’s offbeat Bo-Nita; David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright’s inventive take on Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles; and Samuel D. Hunter’s haunting meditation on spirituality, sexuality and aging, A Great Wilderness. In counterpart to these new works, Jerry and the artistic team programmed an eclectic mix of re-imagined classics (A Servant of Two Masters, Who’s Afraid of

Virginia Woolf?), New York hits (Venus in Fur, Once) and a rare theatrical visit from legendary director Peter Brook (The Suit). Together, these eight plays provided our patrons with ample forums for conversation and discussion, entertainment and enlightenment. The following pages highlight Seattle Rep’s activities on and off the stage, providing a snapshot of what was ultimately a year of great theatre, high emotion and leadership transition. Penning these words six months later, we are reminded anew of Ben and Jerry’s parting gift to the Rep. The 2014-2015 season they planned has gotten off to a remarkable start! The Vaudevillians and Robert Schenkkan’s All the Way and The Great Society are critical and commercial hits—breaking previous Seattle Rep sales records. It’s an amazing way to start a new era at the Rep and we thank them every day. Just as we thank you for continuing to support great art and Seattle Repertory Theatre.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD LEADERSHIP BOARD OF TRUSTEES WITH THE PRODUCTION of three world premieres by Northwest playwrights, the 2013-2014 season introduced our audiences to exciting new work and reaffirmed our institutional commitment to putting the “Seattle” back in Seattle Repertory Theatre. Our commission of R. Hamilton Wright and David Pichette’s adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles was staged and performed by local artists and became one of the best-selling shows in the Rep’s history. The two world premieres in our Leo K. season, Elizabeth Heffron’s Bo-Nita and our commission of Samuel D. Hunter’s A Great Wilderness, also featured primarily Seattle artists. Each of these new works garnered strong reviews and thoughtful responses from critics and audiences alike. We are so grateful to Artistic Director Jerry Manning and Managing Director Benjamin Moore for their leadership and foresight in planning a terrific 20132014 season, which began with Ben’s announcement that it would be his last before retirement. The annual Gala on March 15, 2014 honored Ben’s 28-year career at the Rep and set a new record for funds raised in support of our education programs, for which he has been a passionate advocate. Just a few weeks later, Seattle Rep and

the greater arts community suffered an enormous loss with Jerry’s sudden passing on April 30, 2014. An all-around theatre practitioner, Jerry was a beloved leader, director, producer, mentor and friend. A capacity crowd gathered in the Bagley Wright Theatre on June 2, 2014 for a public Celebration of Life in his honor. The outpouring of condolences and warm memories we received reminded us, once again, of the special bond that theatre creates and the incredible impact Jerry had on our audiences and the community at large. At the close of the 2013-2014 season, Seattle Rep embarked on a new era of leadership. Braden Abraham, a gifted director and member of the Rep’s artistic staff since 2003, was appointed Acting Artistic Director, while Jeffrey Herrmann, formerly Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., joined him at the helm. Together they are making a formidable duo, ably supported by the Rep’s talented senior management team. As Seattle Rep embraces this significant transition, we draw inspiration and joy from the art and artists on our stages, and from the many dedicated subscribers, donors and volunteers who make our work possible. Thank you so much for your support.

NEW PLAY PROGRAM

SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE IS COMMITTED to discovering and nurturing playwrights and their work. Our New Play Program offers the perfect balance of passion for the creative process with the resources needed to help bring the next great American play to life. We carefully curate what we support each year, and local writers and stories based in the Northwest always win a special place in our heart. WORLD PREMIERES During the 2013-2014 season we featured three world premiere productions: The Hound of the Baskervilles by David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright, Bo-Nita by Writers Group alumna Elizabeth Heffron, and A Great Wilderness by Samuel D. Hunter. Both Heffron and Hunter’s plays grew out of Seattle Rep commissions. COMMISSIONS February 2014 saw the Rep announce six new commissions. Samuel Hunter and Braden Abraham, 2014.

Adaptation of Kirsten Grind’s The Lost Bank: The Story of Washington Mutual – The Biggest Bank Failure in American History adapted by Anna Ziegler Author Kirsten Grind will co-adapt her book The Lost Bank with playwright Anna Ziegler, a compelling account of the collapse of Washington Mutual written while Grind was a reporter at the Puget Sound Business Journal. The Lost Bank is a story that is uniquely Seattle’s, and it’s a perfect example of the Rep’s commitment to putting life onstage. Adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People adapted by Braden Abraham from a new literal translation by Bonnie Swift Set in the Pacific Northwest, this reimagined classic follows a doctor who defies an entire town by exposing a water contamination scandal. Adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray adapted by David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright On the heels of their enormously successful adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Pichette and Wright tackle another literary classic.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE CREATES PRODUCTIONS and programs that surprise, entertain, challenge and uplift our community through a shared act of imagination. Through our school-based programs, we serve as a resource for arts integration and theatre-based curriculum by building and sustaining relationships with teachers and students. Through our public and continuing education programs, we use theatre as a tool for the communication of ideas, stories, emotions and beliefs. During the 2013-2014 season, Seattle Rep served 6,523 students and educators—a 29% increase over the previous season. PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES Student Matinee Program Through the Student Matinee Program, Seattle Rep offers special performances of its regular-season productions during the school day, followed by post-play discussions. In the weeks leading up to the show, teachers can sign up for a free in-class workshop with a professional Teaching Artist, who collaborates with teachers in the classroom to prepare and inform students about the play they will experience.

Student matinee audience.

During the 2013-14 season, Seattle Rep offered seven student matinees, including three performances of the enormously popular and critically acclaimed The Hound of the Baskervilles. All together, our Student Matinees served an audience of 4,808 students—an increase of 33% over the prior season. This figure includes 913 students who received free pre-show residencies, more than twice the figure for the previous year. August Wilson Monologue Competition The competition drew 55 student participants, each of whom selected a monologue from one of August Wilson’s plays and received extensive coaching from Seattle Rep’s team of professional Teaching Artists. Following the preliminary round of judging on February 1, 2014, ten semi-finalists were selected to advance to the finals on February 25. Each performed a three-minute monologue in the Leo K. Theatre before a panel of judges drawn from the local arts community. The top three competitors each received a small cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City, where they represented Seattle in the National Finals, which took place on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre on May 5, 2014.

The winners of the 2014 August Wilson Monologue Competition in Seattle were Alexis Baldridge of Timberline High School, Josiah Townsend of Mercer Island High School, and Jazzy Ducay of The Center School.

August Wilson Intro Residencies In addition to the Monologue Competition, Seattle Rep also introduces students to August Wilson’s vast body of work using his Tony Award-winning play Fences as a focal point. Following an in-depth reading of the play, our Teaching Artists engaged students in multidisciplinary, on-your-feet activities—including acting performances, playwriting, scene analysis, and production design—to help them connect to Wilson’s life and work. Residencies were held at Seattle Academy and Shorewood High School, reaching 150 students. Playwriting Projects For more than a decade, Seattle Rep’s educators and professional Teaching Artists have been mentoring high school students through the process of writing their own short plays. This season we partnered with Seattle’s Roosevelt High School, Mercer Island High School and The Center School, a performing arts magnet school located on the Seattle Center campus. Each school created four ten-minute plays, written and produced by the students themselves, under the guidance of theatre professionals. A total of 56 students got to see their plays premiere on the stage of Seattle Rep’s Leo K. Theatre, reaching nearly 700 of the students’ peers, teachers, and family members. Roosevelt High School students in Henri Joyce Fitzmaurice’s short play The Last Straw.

Y-WE Speak For the second year in a row, Seattle Rep partnered with Young Women Empowered (Y-WE), a local non-profit that provides mentorship and empowerment programs for teen girls from diverse backgrounds for a nine-month theatre residency. Sixty young women ages 13-19 and 20 adult mentors participated in a series of generative workshops with a team of Teaching Artists. Twelve youth, together with ten mentors, elected to participate in the final performance on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2014. These 22 women took to the stage of the Leo K. Theatre to share their ideas and life experiences in an uplifting theatre piece framed by the questions: Who is a woman who inspires you? Why is she an inspiration? How does that inspiration affect your life? An audience of 280 friends, family and community members attended the show. CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Bringing Theatre into the Classroom In collaboration with Seattle Children’s Theatre and Book-It Repertory Theatre, Seattle Rep hosted Bringing Theatre into the Classroom, a five-day intensive workshop that trains K-12 educators to integrate theatre-based techniques into daily instruction. In July 2013, 49 teachers attended a summer seminar focused on written curricula linked to Common Core Standards in the arts. Over the course of the school year, we conducted follow-up residencies for 36 of the seminar participants, which paired teachers with professional Teaching Artists to

collaborate on arts learning curricula in their classrooms. Through this process, the Teaching Artists supported the classroom teachers in implementing the tools and techniques they learned during the summer seminar, incorporating theatre and arts appreciation into the curriculum and using drama to make other subjects come alive. Thanks to generous funding from the NEA, BTiC participants could continue their learning online via a newly launched microsite, bticseattle.org.

BTiC participants had the opportunity to choose from more than 20 workshops during their weeklong summer seminar.

Teaching Artist Training Lab Seattle Repertory Theatre is honored to have hosted the Teaching Artist Training Lab (TAT Lab), a professional development program for Washington State Teaching Artists, from 2011-2014. In the third and final year of this partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission and Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Rep served a cohort of 29 Teaching Artists from various artistic disciplines and regions across the state. The eight-month program included eight days of on-site training six teleconferences, and ongoing individualized support from a Teaching Artist mentor. Playwriting Classes Taught by professional playwriting and Teaching Artist Kristina Sutherland-Rowell, our introductory playwriting class encouraged audience members to go beyond watching theatre at Seattle Rep to creating theatre at Seattle Rep. Designed for non-theatre professionals, the eight-week class culminated with a showcase of participants’ work performed by nonunion actors. Twenty-one patrons participated. Professional Arts Training Program Seattle Rep’s Professional Arts Training Program helps to develop the theatre artists and managers of tomorrow. Our full-time, post-college interns work across all production and administration departments, from production management, stage management, technical direction, props, paint and lighting design to artistic casting, literary selection, education, marketing, graphics and development. A small stipend ($200/ week) is provided to ensure a competitive and committed pool of talent.

The 2013–2014 intern class celebrates.

For the 2013-2014 season we drew 300 applicants, including graduates of some of the most prestigious national and regional colleges and universities, such as Princeton University, Stanford University, Vassar College, the University of Washington, the University of Puget Sound, and Whitman College. From this group, we selected 14 interns, who were employed at the Rep full-time from September 2013 to May 2014.

FINANCES

DURING THE 2013–2014 SEASON, Seattle Rep sought to maintain the positive sales momentum generated by the prior year’s 50th Anniversary with engaging and timely programming, while at the same time reducing personnel expenses. With smaller casts for several productions, the specific programming requirements for the season brought down expenses for artistic salaries and fees. Non-union staff wages and benefits were held at prior-year rates and a one-week hiatus was incorporated to help reduce overall costs. However, overly optimistic income targets following our 50th Anniversary season led to shortfalls in ticket sales and contributions, resulting in a budget deficit of ($441k) or (4.8%).

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY Every season we seek to make connections between the art on stage and the art of daily living. Here are some highlights from the 2013-2014 season. CLUB 20/30 Founded in 2013, this commitment-free program for audiences in their 20s and 30s entered its second year. More than 750 club members took advantage of exclusive perks including happy hour beverage prices at all performances, free seat upgrades, free exchanges and personal concierge service. The signature event, Party in the Wings, soared to new heights with 162 members attending a performance of Venus in Fur and a party on stage following the show. Coverage of the event was featured in Seattle Met Magazine both in print and online. BARK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Following on the tremendous success of Dog’s Night Out in 2012, this popular event returned on Sunday, December 15, for a performance of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Patrons were invited to bring their canine pal to the theater for a memorable evening at this special pooch-friendly event. The event sold out – 113 canines attended and brought along 207 humans as their dates for $12,500 in ticket revenue! Seattle Rep also collected more than 1,500 lbs of pet food donations for Seattle Human Society’s Pet Food Bank to benefit low-income, sick and elderly pet owners. A GREAT WILDERNESS – SPEAK UP! Artistic Director Jerry Manning hosted four Speak Up! panel discussions focused on the themes of the play including religion, coming out, reparative therapy, aging and how these themes were reflected in our lives today. Participating panelists included State Senator Marko Liias; reparative therapy survivor Daniel Cords; Jennifer Davies of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays; John Neitzel, St. Mark’s Cathedral; Annie Wilson, Bayview Retirement Community; and Elizabeth Chapin, University of Washington. More than 200 patrons participated in four post-show discussions that were free and open to the public. THE SUIT – COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Seattle Rep partnered with Seattle Theatre Group to host events throughout the community prior and during the engagement of this limited world tour and West Coast premiere. Events included a co-sponsorship of South African choreographer Gregory Moqoma at On the Boards; a Humanities Washington Think & Drink discussion focused on Seattle’s role in social change; a Speak Up! panel featuring the role of women in South African culture hosted by Valerie Curtis-Newton; and an exclusive master class for Seattle artists with members of cast. Seattle Rep worked with Dress for Success to collect professional attire for disadvantaged women in support of career development.

SUPPORTING THE REP

SRO The Seattle Repertory Organization (SRO) is one of the largest, most active theatre volunteer organizations in the country. Members gather monthly at Seattle Rep for a short business meeting, followed by a program related to the art being presented on stage. During the 2013-14 season, SRO’s 57 active members contributed 4,982 volunteer hours and used the proceeds from their volunteer-run Shop at the Rep and numerous small fundraisers to contribute $30,000 to the theatre.

GALA

SRO members Robin Nelson, Jeanne Cantalini, Dottie Delaney, and Lynne Bush surround Ben Moore with good wishes at the Gala.

On Saturday, March 15, 2014, 300 friends of Seattle Rep joined us at the theatre for our annual fundraising gala, honoring Benjamin Moore as he anticipated his departure from the organization at the end of the fiscal year. The event was all glitz and glamor, and was focused on raising funds to support something near and dear to Ben’s heart: our Professional Arts Training Program. It was a record-breaking year, as the event raised nearly $470,000.
