If you’re looking for maximum convenience in your video creation, screen capture tools are likely to be your best bet. If you have a laptop with a webcam, you can pretty much record wherever you are whenever you like. Screen recording software can provide you with complete control over the different aspects of your recording. And they generally offer pretty easy-to-use editing features.

There are a variety of screen capture programs available. For the purposes of this workshop, we’ll focus on MyMediasite which is available to UF Faculty at no cost through a site license and Camtasia Studio which is fairly inexpensive. Be sure to check with your department to see if your unit uses and supports a particular tool such as Adobe Presenter, Captivate or Articulate Studio or Storyline. All of the screen capture recording tools are available for a free trial so that you can test them out before you buy. If you are just getting started, I suggest that you try out the MyMediasite tool so that you can get a feel for the things that you would like to do before you make an investment. This presentation is being recorded through MyMediasite.

MyMediasite allows you to upload your video and make it available to your students through a link in your Canvas course. The Mediasite Desktop Recorder will allow you to record video, desktop and PowerPoints as well as to do some basic editing. You’ll need to have your department IT folks install this on your UF computer. You can install it on your personal computer as well. Be sure to take a look at the MyMediasite Tutorials that explain how to use the features of this tool. As a side note—you can upload any video that your create to Mediasite. So you’ll want to get an account regardless of the type of video that you choose to create because Mediasite provides a player for the media.

If you want to do more with your screencasts, such as bring in different types of media and have greater editing control, you might consider investing in a copy of Camtasia Studio. This tool has a fairly robust tool set and while there is a learning curve, it is fairly easy to use. You can purchase it directly from TechSmith or through one of the educational software vendors such as JourneyEd or Academic Superstore. It runs around $180.00 and is available for Mac or PC. To do a screen recording, you’ll need a desktop or laptop computer, an HD webcam, a microphone and speakers or headphones

If you have a laptop with a built-in webcam, you might give that a try to see if the quality is acceptable. For best results, use an HD webcam with 1080P resolution. They generally start at around $30.00 and go up in price. We’ve had good luck with the Microsoft LifeCam, but there are plenty of other good models out there.

A quality microphone will be your most important piece of equipment. Because if your audio’s bad, then you won’t be able to use the recording. If you have a mic built into your webcam, you can give it a try. But for best results, use an external noisecancelling microphone. There is a pretty big variety of microphone styles and pricing. If you have a bit of money to spend, this is the place to put it. Be sure to get a mic that has either a USB or a 3.5 mm connection. Professional studio mics have different connectors that won’t plug into your computer.

A noise-cancelling headset with a microphone can be an economical choice. These eliminate the need for separate speakers.

Desktop Mic • $30 - $200 • Need separate headphones or speakers • Provides better quality • Comfortable

Headset/Mic • $30 - $150 • Microphone placement is close to mouth • Portable • Integrated headphones • Less comfortable

The cost of a desktop versus a headset with a microphone are pretty close. Your choice is likely to come down to portability and comfort. You may find the reviews on Amazon.com very helpful in making your selection.

“Help!”

You can go ahead and start recording with whatever equipment you have available. That way you can figure out what you need to create the video you want without the risk of purchasing something you don’t need. Don’t be afraid to ask for help in choosing the software and hardware to fit your needs. If your unit does not have video production staff, the video folks at CITT or DCE will be happy to consult with you.
