President’s Address
Murray Farr’s report is on page 8 of the annual report. Thanks to the volunteers at both domestic level including teachers in WA schools and also our interstate officials for all of their efforts last year. Thanks to Kim Ward for his representation at NRSSC and Karen Webster, Deb Shaw and Peter Scaife for their support of School Sport WA as line managers throughout the year. We would also like to acknowledge David Axworthy for his ongoing support of SSWA. Congratulations to Robyn Brierley for her appointment to the SSA International Committee. Thanks to the SSWA office staff including Peter, Robyn, Lynda, Zoe, Christine and Sally along with the SSWA management group for their ongoing effort for the association. 4.
Director’s Report
Thank you to the SSWA office staff for all of their efforts last year. SSWA was successful with the appointment of a second Executive Officer. We also welcomed a new trainee in early 2014. It was an exceptional year for results in the interstate program last year. The preparation of our teams surpasses most other states and a big thank you to all the volunteers for all of their efforts. SSA has a new constitution which aligns with a new management structure with equal representation. PSG is back on the agenda and is scheduled for November 2015. There will be a different look and feel to the event with more sponsorship. Several sports will be added to make up a commitment of 4000 beds. The SSA hosting roster is being revised. There is a possibility taking on 12s Netball and 12s Hockey and 16 Hockey for 2015. Presentation Dinner was a highlight with the new venue and increased attendance. Thank you to the office staff and Zoe Prue for coordinating the event. SSWA has launched a new website for 2014 and the office staff has been transferring the data over to the new system. Thanks for Robyn for leading the office staff in the upgrade. Thanks to all of our volunteers for their efforts as both sport coordinators and interstate officials. Some issues that will be challenges for SSWA in the future; SSWA has had a budget cut and will need to look closely before any expansion can take place and some rationalisation might need to be conducted. Schools budgets are also tight and SSWA has seen some schools not entering competitions due to budgetary constraints. Year 7’s coming into high school will prove some challenges in offering these students enough sporting opportunities. SSWA office has also been involved in the DoE policy to reduce leave liability and three staff in the office are being forced to use long service leave. 5.
Annual Financial Report and Balance Sheet
SSWA has provided the books to our auditor in early January and to date we haven’t received audited books. A letter is in the back of the annual report from the Auditor. Once the audited statement is provided the SSWA management group will approve the report. SSWA is looking to do online payments through Bpay to streamline electronic payments. Interstate uniforms are now being ordered online and paid directly to the clothing supplier SSWA has appointed a debt collector to chase up some outstanding amounts.

2014 PRESIDENT’S REPORT WHY IS SCHOOL SPORT WESTERN AUSTRALIA RECOGNISED School Sport Western Australia is recognised as enhancing the lifestyle of students in school by encouraging the school spirit, building self-esteem, encouraging teamwork and providing opportunities for the development of positive attitudes and practices over a wide range of sporting experiences in an educational context. Participation in sport in school programs run by SSWA provides a framework which gives students the opportunity to learn and consolidate essential knowledge and understandings about a healthy and active lifestyle; to acquire and practice movement skills; to develop positive attitudes and values of fair play, the acknowledgement of excellence and reward for endeavour. SSWA programs provide a framework which allows students the opportunities to progressively develop and extend their knowledge, understandings, values and skills in sport, assisting students to become healthy individuals with the ability and confidence to manage their own lifestyles. Sport in schools provides a range of experiences at a variety of levels that allows for differences between students, including the development of leadership skills and becoming a member of a team. SSWA programs provide students with the opportunity to develop decision making skills, self-analysis and interpersonal skills that will assist them to achieve lifelong pursuits of an active and healthy lifestyle. ONCE AGAIN AN OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR SSWA ON THE INTERSTATE SCENE SSWA hosted 4 National Championships this year and all events were received with excellent reviews by all visiting states and territories. We had a regional flavour as the National Cross Country travelled to Albany and the National Surfing was held in the Margaret River region. The National Orienteering was held in the Perth hills area. The 19 and under Tennis was held at Alexander Park Tennis Club in May. Credit must be awarded to our SSWA office and the meticulous work by our volunteer convenors, for each of those Championships, for their outstanding success. Listed below is a snap shot of our events for the first part of the year: The Interstate Triathlon team who competed in Bendigo had the following Individual Race Day results: Lachlan Twyford, Cassio Boglio and Leighton Cook who all claimed bronze medals, Tegan Scott Silver and Kira Hedgeland Gold. Team Relay Day: Gold for Junior Girls, Intermediate Gold, Silver for Intermediate Boys, Bronze for Junior Boys and Senior Girls. 11 Medals across 2 days of competition, an outstanding effort. The Pizzey Cup competed in May and the highlight was the WA team defeating Queensland to take the bronze medal. History was made when the Australian Singles final (individual event) saw two WA girls play off in the final. Anja Dokic defeated Megan Kauffman 6-3, 6-3 to take the title. The Baseball team continues WA’s good form to take the Bronze in Wollongong. SSWA Water Polo teams once again showed their strength with the Boys winning Silver and the Girls taking out Bronze. AFL 12’s won Silver and had their best result ever. Our Swimmers and Divers are to be congratulated on their tremendous effort winning 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze. Best team effort ever!! Our Senior Country Week and District High School Country Week continue to grow and expand thus providing valuable sporting and cultural experiences for our country students. VOLUNTEERS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SSWA SSWA recognises the significant amount of volunteer time given in the running of our domestic competitions and our interstate programs. We need to be careful that we don’t burn volunteers out because of their willingness to take on large work-loads. Again we need to be on the constant lookout for new, enthusiastic teachers to help run our programs. This year in our newsletter we chose a number of our volunteers to highlight and they were; Anthea Feaver, Jenny Pendlebury, Tamara Cowan, Jeanette Bell, John Batton, Oliver Beath, Tony Campbell and Alf Bebono. The Prestigious Award of Life Membership were bestowed upon Wayne Baseden and John Lawniczak for their outstanding contribution to SSWA. EXCELLENT LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT We are very fortunate that we have Kim WARD as our representative on the National Representative School Sport Committee (NRSSC). He has continually supported SSWA in its endeavours to have School Sport Australia (SSA) comply with Education Department policy. Also SSWA is blessed with another terrific leader and supporter of School Sport in our former direct line Manager – Peter Scaife. Karen Webster has been a tower of strength in leading our association and supporting us in times of difficulty. David Axworthy has always been a great supporter and advocate for SSWA and it is terrific that he takes the time to be present at our major functions particularly the Presentation Dinner. NATIONAL SCENE The Pacific School Games has been reinstated in 2015 and will take place in Adelaide in November. Nine sports will be contesting the event with 400 students and teachers travelling to this major international multi-sport event. FUTURE CHALLENGES I have already spoken about the volunteer and the importance of being vigilant in our recruitment of young teachers. This is a challenge to all involved with School Sport WA. We need to continue with our focus on encouraging teachers to play an active role in our organisation. -8-
CONCLUSION The SSWA Sport Coordinators give an enormous amount of volunteer time and effort to ensure that our programs are conducted professionally and efficiently. Without their valuable involvement we would be unable to present the extensive number of sports that we do. We acknowledge our fantastic Sport Coordinators and ask them to continue in this role for 2015. On behalf of School Sport WA I would like to thank the Office staff of Peter Smith, Robyn Brierley, Lynda Merritt, Zoe Prue, Christine Sheen, Sally Zirnis, Emily Taylor and the SSWA Management Committee for their ongoing excellent contribution to the increased efficiencies of SSWA, their professional work ethic and outstanding contribution in running and promoting SSWA. On behalf of School Sport WA, I applaud this generous donation of time that is freely given by so many of our volunteers; I believe participation in our programs allows students to achieve a wide range of educational outcomes. Once again I look forward to the coming year for your continued support, effort and dedication in helping organise and coordinate school sport as part of the wider family of School Sport WA. SSWA is looking forward to working with you in 2015 to provide quality sporting opportunities for all school students.

2014 SCHOOL SPORT WA DIRECTOR’S REPORT I would once again like to thank Robyn Brierley [Executive Officer], Lynda Merritt [Executive Officer], Zoe Prue [Sports Administrator], Christine Sheen [Finance Officer], Sally Zirnis [Sports Administrator] and Emily Taylor [AFL SportsReady trainee] for their outstanding commitment to SSWA over the year. SSWA hosted four School Sport Australia National Championships in 2014. The Pizzey Cup Tennis Championship was held at Alexander Park Tennis Club, Cross Country in Albany, Orienteering in the Perth Hills and Surfing in Margaret River. All events were extremely successful and showcased our wonderful state and our expertise in hosting National Championships. SSWA participated in 23 School Sport Australia Championships in 2014 which involved 684 students and 131 staff in over 40 teams attending events all around Australia. SSWA had an outstanding year with many teams winning medals at the SSA events. Senior High School and District High School Country Week events are still a highlight on the SSWA event calendar and continue to be strongly supported by regional schools attracting strong media coverage by local press. Senior High School Country Week brings over 3500 students and staff to Perth for a week long sporting carnival in July and District High Schools Country week sees almost 1000 staff and students from smaller and remote schools in attendance. Our Champion Schools program continues to grow under the direction of our sport coordinators. The SSWA webpage was upgraded late 2013 to incorporate a more modern look and feel. In 2014 SSWA launched its App which is an excellent tool for promoting our association. We look forward to increased usage in 2014. SSWA is also gaining good promotion with its own Facebook Page and Twitter account. SSWA takes this opportunity to thank all students, teachers and key delivery agents who assisted in any way with the presentation of School Sport WA in 2014. Special thanks to the management committee, the sport coordinators and their committees for their untiring voluntary efforts. School Sport WA looks forward with anticipation to another busy year in 2015 and to the continued support of teachers in schools who volunteer their time to planning and preparing teams for events on behalf of their students.

2014 SECONDARY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
2014 was again full of activity for Secondary School Sport. As always, thanks are due to the vast number of teacher volunteers who conduct our Interstate and Champion Schools Competitions. Through their efforts, SSWA has reached tens of thousands of secondary school students. In 2014, SSWA competed in 19 sports at secondary state level. The SSWA Office conducted our flagship events of secondary Swimming and secondary Track and Field Carnivals; and again we hosted in Perth thousands of country students for the annual Country Senior High Schools Carnival and also the District High Schools Carnival. Additionally, WA successfully hosted National Championships in Tennis, Orienteering, Cross Country and Surfing. Champion Schools competitions were conducted in 20 different sports at secondary level. Every School week of the year, thousands and thousands of school children engage in active, healthy, well structured sport through the Champion Schools Competitions. Thank you to our Regional representatives for their ongoing work in linking SSWA and Sport in secondary schools. The network created through our regional representatives ensures we are linked directly to teachers in schools, allowing us to respond more directly to their needs. A special thanks to Let me thank the amazing range of volunteer teachers without whom our sports would not operate. Thank you also to the extremely efficient and hard working SSWA Office Staff and to the members of the Secondary Management Committee for their diligence and dedication to School Sport in Western Australia.
PETER SINCLAIR SSWA SECONDARY VICE PRESIDENT
2014 PRIMARY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT The primary sector continues to be an area of potential growth for SSWA. With interest being shown for the inclusion of two additional interstate sports in future years, being Golf and Cricket. Cricket has now been included for primary students, girls and boys, for 2015. These teams will actually compete in early 2016. It is imperative that our level of exposure and further development of the primary champion schools competitions continues. 2014 again saw an increased number of primary teachers appointed as intestate officials. The development of a primary school database with a direct sport contact in most primary schools has raised the awareness of SSWA and the opportunities available to the primary sector. WA’s AFL boys team in the 12’s and under AFL Football Championship held in Sydney achieved their best ever nd result. They finished a very creditable 2 with a group of boys who epitomised the champion team being more successful than a team of champions. Well done to the boys and the support staff on such an achievement. th
Our Primary tennis team competed in Darwin and did well to finish in 5 place. This is certainly a team on the th th improve. Our touch team competed in Morwell with the boys finishing 4 and the girls 5 . Hopefully the number of experienced students will help the teams achieve greater success in 2015. Interstate representation at the School Sport Australia Championships saw our 12’s Netball team attend their third School Sport Australia Championship at the Gold Coast. The girls performed well but weren’t able to repeat their silver of 2013. They finished fifth in the competition. 12’s Boys and Girls Hockey travelled to Hobart in August and did very well. The boys were able to come away second and the girls finished in third place. The 12’s Boys Football (soccer) team finished fifth, as did the girls in th the Championships held in Bendigo. Our primary basketball teams competed in Townsville and the girls were 5 th while the boys were placed 6 in their competition. SSWA hosted the Cross Country Championship in Albany during August. The WA team was at its strongest as we were able to include 10 and 11 year olds in our team because it was a home championship. The WA team won the - 11 -
Encouragement Award for the team making the biggest improvement. Following this trial of including 10’s and 11’s in WA teams SSWA management has decided to allow students in this age group to try out for all future teams. The proviso is that a parent must accompany any under age student to the interstate event. The SSWA Primary Triathlon was again held at Champion Lakes in November. The event involves over 145 teams from schools across the metropolitan area which includes approximately 440 students. SSWA would also like to acknowledge the support from Triathlon WA. th
2014 was the 11 year of the Primary Football (Soccer) “Glory Cup” champion schools event. This event commenced in 2004 with 20 teams and numbers have almost doubled over the 10 years. Together with the Girls Glory Cup there are now over 60 schools competing in the football champion schools competition. Congratulations and thanks go to the Primary Football Sport Coordinator Tony Carvajal for his efforts in promoting and developing the competition. It is passionate teachers like Tony who ensure the success of SSWA events and programs. There continues to be an increasing number of primary school teachers having active involvement in SSWA events. Many are then stepping up to management and coaching roles at the interstate level. The challenge still exists for our organisation to encourage more teachers to participate as leaders in the events overseen by SSWA, both at the interschool and the interstate levels. The primary management committee has continued to work diligently to develop primary sport. Clayton Bird has made a significant contribution to the committee while continuing his role with basketball. Lorraine Feddema was the tour leader for the interstate swimming and diving team and she continues her involvement in developing the students with disability area. John Lawniczak and Daryl Mansfield travelled with the state cross country team and have again provided fantastic support with a number of champion school events. Alex McLennan supported the AFL 12s interstate team in a tour leader role and is very active as a sport convenor for a number of sports and provides valuable support with the basketball champion schools event. I would like to acknowledge the significant role that Daryl Mansfield has played in his time on the management group. He has been an outstanding “front” man for many SSWA events as well as being an excellent organiser of the many events he has been part of. His dedication and hard work will be missed on a day to day basis but he is still being part of the SSWA team in his Principal role in Port Hedland. We look forward to his return after his country stint. The role of SSWA has been well documented and it does play the most significant part in providing sporting opportunities for students in WA schools. The volunteers are an essential part of our organisation being able to provide these events for our students. However, the role of the SSWA office staff cannot be underestimated. The hard work and dedication of the office team is another critical factor in the quantity and quality that is offered to WA students. My sincere thanks to Peter Smith, Robyn Brierley, Lynda Merritt, Zoe Prue, Christine Sheen, Sally Zirnis and Emily Taylor. Many thanks to the Primary Management Group of Daryl Mansfield, John Lawniczak, Alex McLennan, Lorraine Feddema and Clayton Bird. Your efforts are much appreciated. Our focus as we move into 2015 needs to be on planning for a 2015 minus a year 7 cohort and supporting Golf as we strive for future inclusion in the interstate program along with continuing to promote our organisation in the primary sector.
