HYMNS OF THE DAY Apolitikion of the Resurrection Christ is risen form the dead; by death trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs, He has granted life. Eisodikon of the Small Entrance In the congregations bless God, Lord, Who springs out of Israel. Save us, O Son of God, Who rose from the dead, as we sing to You, Alleluia. Apolytikion of St Thomas - Tone 7 Christ our God, You are the Life that dawned from the grave, though the tomb was sealed. Through closed doors You came to the Apostles. You are the Resurrection of all. And, You renewed us through them with an upright spirit, according to Your great mercy. Kontakion - Tone 8 Even though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and granting peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen.

EPISTLE READING EPISTLE READER..... NICK PERDARIS Priest: Let Us Attend… Reader: Great is our Lord, and great is his power…Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. Priest: Wisdom… Reader: The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20 Priest: Let us be Attentive... Reader: IN THOSE DAYS, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. many."

GAIH NEWS The NEW WORKS READING SERIES of the Greek-Americans In Hollywood Ministry presents the staged reading of “The Greek Battalion” on Saturday, May 25 at 1pm in the Huffington Center of The Saint Sophia Cathedral. The screenplay, based on the autobiography “Yannis” by WWII hero John Giannaris, was adapted for the screen by writer/producer Louis Anastas. (Giannaris was honored at Saint Sophia just last year.) It retells the true story of how Giannaris, and the 21 Greek-American commandos he led, battled thousands of Germans in Nazioccupied central Greece (near Thermopylae) in the tumultuous days after D-Day. The reading will feature accomplished GreekAmerican actors John Kapelos, Louis Mandylor, and Peter Nikkos, among many others. Don’t miss out on this important cultural event! A discussion to follow. Admission and parking are free. Contact [email protected] for more information.

MOTHER OF THE YEAR 2013! SUSAN PATZAKIS Susan Giokaris Patzakis, born in Lima, Ohio, is the daughter of immigrant parents who came to America from Greece seeking a better life. Her parents found that and more for themselves and their five children. Susan, blessed with an idyllic upbringing in the small midwestern town, ventured to Columbus to earn her Bachelors of Science degree at Ohio State University where she also met her husband, Doctor Michael John Patzakis. Once married, they replanted their Midwestern roots in sunnier Southern California and embarked on an extraordinary life together. Susan raised four amazing children while serving as a leader in the Greek Orthodox community and spearheading a myriad of philanthropic causes on behalf of Philoptochos, the San Francisco Diocese, the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute, the Hellenic American Medical and Dental Society (HAMDS) and other notable organizations. Educated as a nurse, Susan has brought that same selfless care and compassion to every undertaking, successfully serving as Chair, co-chair and committee member of countless fundraisers, benefits and signature events for the Greek Orthodox philanthropic community. A devoted wife, member of the church, keystone in the community and mother and grandmother extraordinaire, she has brought and continues to bring a light to those causes she supports and to those fortunate enough to be around her. Her story is truly the "American Dream" with roots that reach from the small village of Ta Giokarieka near Tripolis, Greece, to metropolitan Los Angeles. Susan is an inspiration to all and her selection as the 2013 Los Angeles Saint Sophia Philoptochos Chapter, Mother of the Year, is a lifetime in the making. Susan resides in San Marino, California with her husband, Dr. Michael Patzakis, and with all of her four children and nine grandchildren close by. 12

For those who are sick or suffering… St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14) Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours.
