On June 8 this month we will celebrate the Great and Holy Feast of Pentecost; when the Holy Spirit descends as tongues of fire upon the Apostles. Filled with the Spirit, they began speaking in other tongues and dialects, as the Holy Spirit instructed them, in order that the Gospel may be spread to all nations. Holy Pentecost, then, as we celebrate it today, is the pouring forth of the gifts of the Holy Spirit upon the members of the Church for the purpose of spreading the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But when do we receive these gifts of the Holy Spirit? At our Baptism? Well…yes and no. Usually we receive them during the Baptism service, but from a different Sacrament. The Sacrament or Mystery of Holy Chrismation. Immediately after we ascend from the Baptismal waters, the priest anoints us with the Holy Myron or Chrism, and says, “The Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit”. This is the common practice for those who have never been baptized (typically infants). However, this is also the manner in which other Christians can convert and become Orthodox. If an adult has already been baptized by another Christian denomination (assuming we recognize the baptism), they can become Orthodox Christians by receiving the Sacrament of Holy Chrismation (by being anointed with the Chrism). But what is the Myron or Chrism? Is it just olive oil? Where does it come from? The Holy Chrism is prepared from oil and another fragrant essences, which symbolize the variety of gifts of the Holy Spirit that the chrismated Christian receives. At the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, there is an official list of the kinds of fragrances, from which the Holy Chrism is made, which includes 57 kinds of elements. Why is the list at the Patriarchate in Constantinople? Because it is the Patriarch himself, along with the other Orthodox Hierarchs and clergy who gather in Constantinople during Holy Week, once every 10 years, to prepare and consecrate the Holy Chrism. It is then sent to all the Churches under the Patriarchal jurisdiction all over the world. During Holy Week, at the Patriarchal Church, special services are offered as the large copper boilers filled with the myrrh are prepared. The Patriarch, holding a lighted candle, touches each boiler, placing pieces of old charred holy icons in them. The copper boilers simmer over fires that are lit and sustained by the burning of old liturgical books that are no longer able to be used. On Holy and Great Wednesday, after the Divine Liturgy of the Pre‑sanctified gifts, the Patriarch places in the boilers rose oil, musk, and other sweet‑smelling oils. On this day, after all the different elements have combined, all preparations for making the Holy Chrism are completed.

The Holy Myrrh (Myron or Chrism), is then sent to all the Orthodox parishes where the local parish priest (after receiving the Myron from his ruling bishop), keeps the Myron in a small gold container in the altar. It is this Myrrh that is used to anoint infants and adults, as they become Orthodox, so that they can have their own “Pentecost” and receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. - Fr. Cosmas

Parish Finances Please join us on Sunday, June 1st after Divine Liturgy for a very important General Assembly meeting. This year our loan matures. We will be presenting information regarding the renewal proposal. It is very important for you to be aware of our financial situation. This is your opportunity to ask questions and share your thoughts. If you cannot join us, we will be taking minutes of the meeting which are available in the office for our stewards to review.

AHEPA

In a recent election, Mr.Evange Bozinis (pictured with his wife Maria) was voted president of our local chapter, Little Fort 218. Following is his message to our community. We are two of the few remaining Waukeganites from the old St. Demetrios community. The history of my wife goes back to the early nineteen hundreds. Her father Peter Dracos, was a member of the first parish council of then, newly established St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Waukegan and North Chicago in 1929. I am from Thessaloniki, Greece….a pharmacist by profession, having owned and operated two community pharmacies in the area for over thirty years. My wife and I have one married daughter and three grandchildren. I am pleased to say that the vast part of my life has included serving our St. Demetrios community, and our magnificent Byzantine church as its President, Secretary, Parish Council, District Clergy Laity Conference Chairman, chanter, and in various critical committees. One of these which gratified me the most was the St. Demetrios Building Committee, which, in the middle of the old abandoned polo grounds, our gold-dome church miraculously rose high. I have been a member of Ahepa from my college days, and the past few years I served as the Secretary of our chapter. I am very thrilled to have been elected, because it will fulfill the ideals I feel very passionate about. Ahepa stands for American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, founded in 1922 in response to the evils of bigotry and racism th that emerged in the early 20 century American society. Today, however, Ahepa’s missions are different from its past, it brings to light the ideals of ancient Greece, which include philanthropy, education, civic responsibility, sports, family and individual excellence. Although the majority of the membership is composed of Americans of Greek descent, it is open to anyone who believes in the honorable missions of this Worldwide Fraternal Organization. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, President Harry S. Truman, President George W. Bush, President Gerald R. Ford and Bob Hope are some of the many who were proud Ahepans and PhilHellenes. Our local chapter, Little Fort 218, has kept its end of covenants with positive and profound projects, which have improved the lives of many over the years. Today, some of our works include, Feed the children of Greece, donate money for medical supplies to Greece, provide funds to local families with dire financial needs, support St. Demetrios Church financially, and participate in the Annual Greek Fest. However, our most important project is awarding numerous scholarships each year to our deserving youth. In 2013 our chapter awarded five scholarships with one thousand dollars to each student from a high school senior to students attending college. This year’s scholarships will be announced in July at the Greek Fest. For more information about becoming a member, call at 847-778-0704. Please “Like” us on Facebook.

Junior Olympics th

The Junior Olympics was held on Saturday May 24 at Sts. Constantine & Helen Church in Palos Hills where about 2000 kids between the ages of 7 to 18 years old, representing about 37 parishes from 6 states, came together to compete in th sports and enjoy fun and fellowship. This is the 9 year that our Church participated in the Junior Olympics. We had two basketball teams, two soccer teams, two volleyball teams and participated in many track & field events, tennis and ping pong. As in past years, our kids were very successful and won the following medals: Clara Macheras – Gold medal in Shot Put. George Papadakis – Silver medal in Shot Put Yiannis Stianos – Bronze medal in Long Jump

Yiannis Halekakis – Gold medal in Tennis Nefeli Papadakis – Silver medal in Shot Put

The biggest excitement was our girls volleyball team, comprised of only 6 girls. They won their match against Saint Haralambos, then won again against Saint Mary’s in Minneapolis (Father Thomas Alatzakis’ church). The girls then played Saint Nectarios, who had a bigger and older team of 18 girls. To the surprise of everyone in attendance, the girls won the first game, lost the second game, and lost the third game after many tiebreakers. Congratulations to all that participated, and thank you to the Coordinator Petros Macheras and all of the coaches and parents that helped during the Jr. Olympics and at all of our practices.
