Stewardship Note for the Feast of the Holy Family: The first reading today provides a challenging blueprint for the good stewardship of our family relationships. How do I measure up?

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Sunday Dec. 27, 2009 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. -1 John 3:2a Family in Crisis. Today’s Gospel gives us the only real glimpse we have into the life of the Holy Family during the childhood of Jesus. Here we see a family in crisis. A son is lost and frantic parents search and search until they finally find him. We hear these words from the mother of Jesus: “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety” (Luke 2:48). We can only imagine the distress felt by Mary and Joseph. Their love for their son brought them to their wits’ end. Let us take the opportunity this day to ask the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph to intercede for us in times when our families experience anxiety and fear. The second collection this weekend is for the reduction of the Diocesan Obligations. Please be generous.

HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY This Sunday we celebrate families. By recalling the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we remember who we are called to be. Each father must take Saint Joseph as his model of patience and fortitude. Each mother must take the Blessed Virgin Mary as her model of gentle strength and care. Each child must take Jesus as an example of obedience and trusts. After each Mass this weekend you are invited to come forward with the members of your family to seek a blessing from God through the hands of the priest. May God build up in our parish community, through the intercession of our good patron, families rich in the Christian virtues, families of prayer and charity, families which are forgiving and holy.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD On January 17th, the Children’s Liturgy of the Word will once again resume. In the past, participation was minimal. For this reason, I am asking parents and guardians of children between the ages of 4 through 7 to register them. Children who have received the First Eucharist have an obligation to participate in the Mass at full, rather than the Liturgy for the younger children. Please know that registration is not an obligation to attend. It is a privilege for the children and myself, and gives me a better idea of how many children I need to plan for. Registration forms can be obtained at the school office, Rectory, or in the church pews. All registrations should be returned to the school or rectory, or mail them to: Barbara Mazeika, 33 Upper Gore Rd., Webster, MA 01570, by January 11, 2010. As always, the Children’s Liturgy will be at every 9:30 a.m.

Sacred Heart. We are also grateful to the Sacred Heart Society Executive Board and its President Theresa Jankowski for a donation of $1000 for fuel for the school. This monetary donation is not only a great help to the school during these cold months but is also a sign of caring and support for the school by the Sacred Heart members. 1-25 Club. Many thanks to the 1-25 Club of St. Joseph Basilica for a donation of $3000 for fuel for the parish. The parish is a spiritual community of believers but at the same time is an institution which owns property and has its financial responsibilities. I want to take this occasion to thank the organization and the many dedicated individuals who in the spirit of Christmas extended their many ways of kindness and provided their support to St. Joseph Basilica and St. Joseph School.
