2003 Sacred Heart Women’s Soccer

2003 Preseason Outlook With a blend of experience and youth, the Sacred Heart University women’s soccer team has its sights set on a third-straight trip to the Northeast Conference Tournament and beyond in 2003. Eight starters, including three all-conference selections and the team’s top-five scoring threats, return to the SHU lineup. Add to that six talented newcomers and the Pioneers looked poised to be one of the conference favorites heading into the season. “Our returning players have a better understanding for the game plus with our new additions, on paper, we look to be a pretty good team heading into the season,” stated head coach Joe Barroso. “The talent is there for us to get back to the Northeast Conference playoffs, and from there we take it one game at a time.” The Pioneers finished off 2002 with a 10-7-2 overall record and tied for third in the conference with a 6-2-2 NEC mark. SHU took on topseeded Central Connecticut in the opening round of the tournament, looking to avenge a 3-0 early season loss and take the next step in defending their NEC title. It wasn’t to be, as the Pioneers fell 1-0 at the hands of the eventual champion, leaving the team hungry for another title run in 2003. Leading the way will be the trio of senior midfielder Paula Pineda (Vigo, Spain), junior midfielder Ingrid Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and senior goalkeeper Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ), each an All-NEC selection in 2002. “We bring back some tremendous talent in goalkeeper Leslie Senior Paula Pineda Konsig and midfielders Paula Pineda and Ingrid Olsson,” commented Barroso. “Leslie is the best keeper in the league and Paula also ranks up their with the best in the conference.” Pineda returns as the team’s leading scorer after posting career numbers in 2002. She tallied 13 goals on the season, including four game-winners, to go with four assists for 30 points. The senior from Vigo, Spain earned two NEC Player-of-the-Week honors last season, and finished third in the conference in points per game (1.67 ppg) and goals-per-game (0.72 gpg). Pineda recorded back-to-back hat tricks in wins over St. Peter’s (7-0) and Northeastern (4-0) last season. Olsson, second on the team in scoring, returns to give the Pioneers one of the strongest midfields in the NEC. Olsson posted four goals and two assists in 2002 with two game-winners. Joining Pineda and Olsson in the midfield are juniors Samantha Leonard (Rockland, MA) and Katie Busam (Smithfield, RI). Highly recruited freshman Randie Quaglia (Manchester, CT) will step in and make an immediate impact this season. Up front this season, Sacred Heart welcomes back three talented players from last year’s squad in addition to two highly touted newcomers. Senior Jill Bizeau (Suffield, CT) along with juniors Ashleigh Bepko (Guilford, CT) and Nathalie Urbas (Pickering, Ontario) give SHU a solid scoring punch. Bizeau finished 2002 with nine points on three goals and three assists while Bepko found the back of the net twice to go with three assists. Urbas tickled Junior Ingrid Olsson

2003 Sacred Heart Women’s Soccer the twine twice a year ago while assisting on another for five points. The addition of transfer Christel Kalweit (West Barnstable, MA) from Mitchell College in New London, where she was named an AllNew England soccer player, and freshman Lisa Burbige (Babylon, NY), give the Pioneers added fire power on the attack. Back to anchor the defense is Konsig, a three-time All-NEC goalkeeper. The senior put together stellar numbers in 2002, posting a stingy 0.56 goals-against-average, ranking ninth in the country and tops in the conference. Konsig recorded a school-record 10 shutouts while allowing just one goal at home in leading the Pioneers to a perfect 7-0-1 record on Campus Field last season. Konsig currently holds six school records and is poised to break two more this season. Senior Leslie Konsig

Joining Konsig to lead the defense is fellow senior Colleen Attard (Bayport, NY). Attard and Konsig will join Pineda in captaining the 2003 squad. Also returning defensively are juniors Jasmine Urbas (Pickering, Ontario), Lisa Harvey (Gales Ferry, CT) and Erika Harrysson (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Windham, NH). Freshmen Karin Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Colleen Bardelli (Selkirk, NY) will be counted on to step in and give the Pioneers depth in the back this season. “This year’s team is more experienced, have gotten to know each other better, and are playing better soccer as a team,” stated the head coach. “We are adding to that, the deepest recruiting class that we have had since I have been here” The 2003 schedule is highlighted with the traditional Northeast Conference match-ups including home games with Mount St. Mary’s, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson and defending NEC Champion, Central Connecticut. A strong slate of non-conference tilts kicks-off early as the Pioneers open the season at home against Lafayette, new to the schedule this season, on August 31st. Road games versus Maine, Yale, Brown and Northeastern as well as facing Siena and Rider in the University at Albany Tournament will provide SHU with solid out-of-league tests. “Our non-conference schedule is highlighted with match-ups at two Ivy League schools in Yale and Brown,” said Barrosso. “We have added Lafayette to the schedule and will travel to the University of Maine once again, giving us a strong out of conference schedule.”
