Notes from the Past Season SWINEHART REPEATS AS MAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Senior forward Ashley Swinehart became the first player in conference history to win the MAC Player of the Year honor twice and extended the streak of Miami winners to four years. Prior to Swinehart’s two, former teammates Andrea Cunningham (2001) and Danielle Berkemeier (2002) were the first Miamians to claim the award. Swinehart’s led the MAC in shots (78) and shots per game (4.33), and was second in points per game (1.61) and goals per game (0.72), while tying for second with five game-winning goals. SWINEHART EARNS FIRST-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORS: The MAC Player of the Year honor was only one of the accolades senior Ashley Swinehart received in 2004, as her academic prowess was recognized once again with her selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. The speech communication major graduated with a 3.98 GPA. In 2003, Swinehart received Second-Team Academic AllAmerica accolades.

2005 Miami University Women’s Soccer SLINGER AND LEVANT NAMED TO MAC ALL-FRESHMAN SQUAD: Midfielder Lindy Slinger and defender Jaclyn Levant were named to the MAC AllFreshman Team. Slinger was second on the team in points with 12, as she chipped in four goals and a team-high four assists while playing in all 19 RedHawk contests. Slinger’s most productive weekend was on the team’s trip to Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Against the Huskies, Slinger’s second-half goal was one second away from being the game-winner before NIU tied the contest. At WMU, Slinger’s OT score earned Miami a 4-3 win. In the backfield, Levant played in 18 of Miami’s 19 games, adding one assist. BACK IN THE MAC TOURNAMENT: After missing the conference postseason in 2003, the RedHawks used two lateseason wins at Miami Soccer Field against Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan to propel the team to a No. 6 seed and a return to the MAC Tournament for the first time since the team’s last NCAA appearance in 2002. CMU had the last word in 2004, however, as the Chippewas hosted the quarterfinal game and ended Miami’s season, 2-1. WHAT A DAY FOR KATIE GRAY: Miami’s sophomore defender Katie Gray scored just two goals in her freshman season of 2003. In one day against Marshall at Miami Soccer Field, she more than doubled her career total, scoring a hat trick on the way to a 3-2 RedHawk victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the sixth minute, Gray scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half, giving Miami a 2-1 lead. Marshall, however, tied the game with just over five minutes to play. Gray struck again under two minutes into the second www.MURedHawks.com

Notes from the Past Season

Miami Soccer Field, Miami won five of its remaining six contests in Oxford. The success started with MAC wins over Kent State and Buffalo before Ohio, the eventual co-regular season champions, edged Miami, 1-0. Wins over Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan later in the month helped Miami to a MAC Tournament berth and gave the Red and White five wins in seven tries in Oxford.

Jaclyn Levant All-MAC Freshman Team overtime with her third goal of the day, delivering a victory for Miami. A MILESTONE FOR ORTNER: After trading starts with junior Leigh Terry for the first dozen games of the year, junior Megan Ortner earned the starting job and soon eclipsed the Miami career saves record. With 120 saves in her first two seasons, Ortner passed Katie Karlander (2001-02) during the year to become the second RedHawk goalkeeper in team history to stop 100 shots. Karlander had 109 saves in her two seasons. SUCCESS IN THE GOLDEN STATE: The RedHawks made their inaugural appearance in California in 2004 and came back with two victories. Playing in San Jose, Calif., Miami topped Sacramento State 2-0 on goals from Ashley Swinehart and Kathleen Vistica two days before Swinehart found the back of the net twice against host San Jose State in a 3-2 Miami victory. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: After a season-opening loss to Wright State at www.MURedHawks.com

PASSING THE TORCH: All six of Miami’s goals in the team’s last three games of the year were scored either by Ashley Swinehart or Lindy Slinger. The senior back-to-back MAC Player of the Year had her fourth career hat trick against Central Michigan in Miami’s 3-2 win on Oct. 24 in Oxford before Slinger, one of Miami’s two MAC All-Freshman honorees, scored Miami’s first goal five days later against Eastern Michigan. Swinehart earned her fifth gamewinning goal of the year later in the contest as the RedHawks ended the regular season and clinched the sixth seed in the conference tournament with a 2-1 win. In the MAC Tournament, though Miami fell 2-1, its top returning scorer, Slinger, tied the game in the first half with her fourth goal of the year. OVERTIME IS NO PROBLEM: Miami posted a 2-0-2 record in overtime games in 2004 including two extrasession games in one weekend. On Sept. 17 at Northern Illinois, Miami finished with a 1-1 tie, two days before topping Western Michigan in the second OT, 4-3. Two weeks later, Miami topped Marshall in Oxford, 3-2 in two overtimes, and the Red and White played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in Akron on Oct. 22.

breakaway goal by Wright State’s Megan Mattioda with 15 seconds to go in the first half proved to be all the Raiders needed to hand Miami soccer a loss in its season opener in Oxford. Mary Beth Young’s goal on an empty net in the 87th minute provided the capper for the visitors’ 2-0 win. Miami keeper Leigh Terry scrambled for four saves on six shots on goal, eight total. Miami fired seven shots, though none required a save from WSU goalie Steph Comisar. Ashley Swinehart led Miami with three of the team’s seven shots. Mattioda’s goal just before the half came when she took a pass from the backfield and maneuvered ahead of her Miami defender toward the goal’s right side, directing the shot toward the left corner past a diving Terry. On the second goal, Terry advanced well toward midfield to try and move the ball back into Miami’s offensive zone, but the ball bounced off Young, who continued unimpeded toward the net.

Ashley Swinehart scored Miami’s first goal of the season in the game’s 44th minute on a crossgoal pass from rookie Lindy Slinger. The insurance goal came from Kathleen Vistica just after the 70-minute mark with an assist from another rookie, Jennifer Rush. final-minute goal from Ashley Swinehart prevented 13th-ranked Illinois from shutting out the RedHawks, but the Illini’s three goals were enough to hand Miami a 3-1 loss at the Clash of the Conferences tournament at Purdue University. Illinois scored its first goal when Tara Hurless found Andrea Ridgeway in the 11th minute. Miami went into halftime trailing 1-0, but the Illini widened the lead with two more unassisted goals. Hurless was the goal scorer the next time to put Illinois up 2-0 in the 54th minute, while Jessica Bayne scored seven minutes later for the 3-0 advantage. Miami keeper Leigh Terry left the game due to injury after receiving a hard foul late in the first half. Megan Ortner played the rest of the match between the bars for Miami. fter entering the contest at Bowling Green in third place in the Mid-American Conference, just four points out of first, the Miami soccer team suffered a setback to its hopes of hosting the MAC Tournament with a 20 loss to the Falcons in which the Red and White had difficulty finding its offensive touch. Ashley Swinehart had Miami’s lone shot on the afternoon, while the host Falcons fired 10 of their own. The first one to find the back of the net came off the foot of Gina Rossi in the game’s 23rd minute. Bowling Green took the one-goal lead into the break, but nine minutes into the second half, Kristy Coppes scored her MAC-best 11th goal for the 2-0 advantage. Megan Ortner started her sixth contest in goal and had two saves, dropping her record to 2-3-1. The shutout was the third time Miami was blanked in 2004 and the second that the RedHawks went the complete 90 minutes without a shot on goal. hough RedHawk goalkeeper Megan Ortner performed admirably trying to hold back the Cincinnati offensive tide while Miami looked for its offense, the Red and White dropped a 2-1 decision to archrival UC at Cincinnati’s Gettler Stadium. Miami and UC finished even in shots with each team firing 13 attempts, but the tempo of UC’s offensive attack was summed up by the Bearcats earning nine corner kicks to Miami’s three. UC scored first when Rachel Epps pounded a loose ball ahead to a charging Lisa Stephens up the middle for a goal from about 10 yards out in the 15th minute. lthough regardless of the outcome against Eastern Michigan Miami soccer would be on the road for the MAC Tournament, the RedHawks still continued their inspired play in the team’s regular-season finale against the Eagles, claiming a 2-1 win. The RedHawks got out to a 2-0 lead within the first 12 minutes of the game. Only 44 seconds into the contest, a bit of trickery on the part of Ashley Swinehart led to Miami’s first goal. Instead, Swinehart let the ball pass to an undefended Lindy Slinger, who beat EMU keeper Nikki Allen one-on-one. Miami went up 2-0 after Swinehart threaded a shot along the endline from the keeper’s right side and snuck it past Allen for her 13th goal of the year. Eastern Michigan halved the lead less than three minutes later when Jessica Hupe took a pass from Shannon McIntyre around the left end and pushed it past Miami keeper Megan Ortner. T

hough two inspiring wins to end the regular season earned Miami the sixth seed in the Mid-American Conference Soccer Tournament, the RedHawks saw that momentum vanish on Tuesday afternoon as Central Michigan defeated Miami, 2-1, in the tournament’s quarterfinal round at a rain-soaked CMU Soccer Complex. The Chippewas’ Rosamaria Rago scored with 30:16 left in the first half to put CMU up 1-0. Amid a crowded penalty area, Rago took a pass on her right from Lisa Taube and knocked it past a drawn-out Megan Ortner and off a Miami defender into the net. Miami tied the score with 20:54 to go in the first half as Aimee Prevallet knocked a pass up from midfield to Lindy Slinger. But Central Michigan pulled ahead again, this time with just under eight minutes to go in the first half as Laura Roberts took a pass from Rago at the top of the penalty area and pounded a shot that knocked off the bottom of the crossbar and down for a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
