Amanda Berkley Head Coach Fourth Season Wisconsin, 2008

A

manda Berkley begins her fourth season as head coach for the Southern Miss volleyball program that included one season serving as the interim coach. Last season, Berkley directed the Golden Eagles to a 24-win season, the program’s most since 2009. In fact, her back-to-back 20-win seasons were the first in program history since 1989-90. A pair of Golden Eagles earned all-conference honors with Mary Pursell and Jasmine Crowell. Southern Miss also claimed the Libero of the Year with Pursell. In 2013, Berkley guided the Golden Eagles to a 17-14 record, a plus-12 turn around, including a 7-7 record in Conference USA play. Sophomore Quinci Hayward earned second team all-conference honors for the first time since 2011. Prior to taking the interim position, she was an assistant for the past three seasons with her duties will include on the court coaching, recruiting, scouting, assistance in practice planning, fundraising, travel, camp coordinator and various administrative duties. Before to coming to Southern Miss, Berkley spent two seasons as UW-Whitewater’s graduate assistant coach. She also coached the junior varsity team as well as planned practices and scheduled matches. Her duties also included being assistant strength and conditioning coach for volleyball, football and track teams. Berkley graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in kinesiology/physical education and a minor in health. She competed on the University of Wisconsin’s volleyball team as a defensive specialist. During her career, the Badgers placed second in the Big Ten twice and made it to the Elite Eight twice as well as finishing in the tournament Sweet 16 tournament once. As a player, Berkley walked on as a freshman and earned a scholarship in 2005. She finished third on the team in service aces in

2006 and 2007. She has coached at various clinics and camps throughout the state and

has coached club volleyball for Capital Volleyball Club. Berkley attended Washington Park High School in Racine, Wis., where she played volleyball, basketball, and soccer. She was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and soccer, while earning two letters in basketball. The Racine, Wis., native earned her master’s degree in professional development with and emphasis in health, physical education and coaching from UW-Whitewater in 2009. She is the daughter of Robert and Kathryn Berkley. Her sister, Susie Johnson, played volleyball at Idaho State and is now the head volleyball coach at UW-Milwaukee.

avid Brown begins his third season as an assistant coach for the Southern Miss volleyball program. His duties include on the court coaching, recruiting, scouting, assistance in practice planning, fundraising, travel, camp coordinator and various administrative duties. Prior to coming to Southern Miss, Brown spent the past season as a volunteer assistant at UC Santa Barbara where he helped with day-to-day operations as well as help with practices. He also was responsible for stat taking and opponent preparation. The team he worked with won the Big West Conference Tournament and was a NCAA qualifier. He was awarded the 2013 AVCA Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship. Brown spent five seasons as a player and coach for the UW-Madison’s Men’s Club Volleyball team where he helped oversee all aspects of the club. He also served as head coach for the Capital Volleyball Academy for the 16 red, 17 red and 16 navy teams. He was an assistant for 18 navy team. Brown coached for girls’ volleyball at Oregon High (Wis.) School for three seasons and compiled an 85-29 record. The Muskego, Wis., native earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin in 2013 with a triple major in history, political science and history education. He is the son of Paul and Joyce Brown.

arlos Moreno is in his first season with the Southern Miss volleyball program. His duties include team travel, on the court coaching working primarily with setters, organizing recruiting, fundraising and compliance. Prior to coming to Southern Miss, Moreno was the summer camp director of Moreno Volleyball Clinics and Camps in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was also the head volleyball coach at the University of Sao Paulo Women’s Volleyball Team from 2000 to 2002 where he coached the team to the Cup Championships. As an athlete, Moreno had an outstanding career as a setter at Brigham Young University where he earned practically every award possible for a collegiate volleyball player, including 2 AVCA National Player of the Week honors, AVCA National Player of the Year, MVP of the NCAA Tournament, AVCA All-American First-Team honors, MPSF Player of the Year, First-Team All-MPSF and MPSF Tournament MVP. He was a member of the 2004 NCAA Championship team and the 2003 runners-up. He was ranked fourth all-time at BYU in service aces with 73 and games played with 328. Moreno holds second all-time record at BYU with 4,628 career assists. Moreno had a stellar career playing alongside Olympians for the past 11 years as a professional volleyball player in countries such as Greece, Portugal, Brazil, Slovenia and France where he won the championship at every single one of them. The Brazilian native from Sao Paulo earned a bachelor degree in advertising and marketing at Brigham Young University in 2005. Moreno is the son of Antonio and Selma Moreno. His father played for the Brazilian national team for 16 years and participated in four Olympics. The oldest of six children, and a member of a prominent volleyball family, Moreno started playing volleyball since he can remember. Twin sister, Anna Allison is the head women’s volleyball coach at Bucknell University. Moreno is married to Maria Eduarda Moreno.

aura McKowen enters her second season as a graduate assistant on the Southern Miss training staff. McKowen’s focus is on the volleyball, men’s tennis, track and field and cross country teams. She evaluates and treats all sport-related injuries and also serves as a preceptor to athletic training students in the undergraduate program. While a student at LSU, she held clinical rotation duties in football, baseball and women’s soccer. She became proficient in recognition of heat illness, Class 4 Laser therapy, manual therapy and other modalities. McKowen is licensed by the Mississippi State Department of Health and by the Board of Certification. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and has been CPR certified by the American Red Cross since 2012. McKowen plans on completing her Sports Management degree in May 2017. She earned her bachelor’s in athletic training from LSU in 2015.
