s the home of the Miami University women’s soccer team since the program’s inception in 1997, Miami Soccer Field stands as one of the top soccer facilities in the region. With a natural grass surface and permanent bleacher seating for 1,500 fans, Miami Soccer Field provides an ideal setting for players and fans alike. Season Preview

An inside scoop on what to expect from the RedHawks in 2009 Coming off of back-to-back six-win seasons and having a strong spring, what are your expectations for the team this year? Allison: My expectations for the team this year are far greater than they have been in the past. We have a strong group of talented players, all of whom have game experience. It’s nice to have a team that is willing to work so hard and put forth the time so that they and their teammates can be successful. Eva: Expectations are definitely higher than six wins. Even though we have just been practicing a short time, it is clear that the whole team has worked hard over the summer to come back better prepared than ever before. What is the team looking to improve upon/change heading into this season? Allison: This season we are looking to improve little things on the field, such as our team shape and defensive positioning, but also bigger goals that include our league standing and hopefully a MAC championship. Eva: We started making some changes in the spring, both mentally and in the way we play. The spring was a very positive experience for us and I think that we need to keep building on what we started rather than making major changes this close to the season.

Individually, what are you looking to improve upon? Allison: This season is important for me because it is my final time being out on

the field doing what I love. I hope to improve my game and my work as a leader of the team and plan to leave as much out on the field as I can.

Q & A with co-captains Allison Berkey and Eva Candia

Eva: I’m looking to improve at being stronger defensively, which requires both lifting and better positioning. Also, the team is working hard at winning the ball in the air on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. After some tough losses early in last year’s campaign, how important is the Louisville game (the season opener) and getting the season started on the right foot? Allison: Last year was difficult, mainly because our schedule was so difficult in the teams that we went up against. I think the Louisville game is going to be extremely important mentally for us because it’s going to be our first big test. It’s good to get in some exhibition games early during preseason but games against teams like Louisville are when you learn how to finish out a game. Eva: The season is like a puzzle that has to be done before the season starts. Every preseason game is a chance for us to put the pieces together. A win this early on would be a boost for our confidence, but even more so, it is important to see if we can play “our game” against a very good team.

Season Preview With much of last year’s team returning, how important will experience be in the success of this year’s squad? Allison: I think that experience is our biggest advantage this year. With a lot of returners, our success is going to come from experience in past MAC competition. We know how the conference works and how games go and our goal this year is to use that in order to make us successful in the league. In the past, MAC competition has followed a fairly consistent pattern of anybody can win on any day. We hope to change that this season and do what we can to control what is possible. Eva: Experience will be very important for the team this year. Just as last season, we have a lot of talent but we also have leaders at every position on the field, which will help us go further. We have a strong senior class

that will do whatever it takes to win before they graduate. Their mentality and experience will be a great help for the younger players. After two scrimmages and much of the preseason, how are the freshmen looking so far? The team as a whole? Allison: The freshmen seem to be fitting in well. With six incoming freshman, they are the smallest group that we’ve had in the time since I have been at Miami, but they are also a consistent group. They have a lot of upperclassmen to look at and learn from. The North London scrimmage was a good start to the preseason and the scrimmage against Wright State showed some improvements of what we’ve focused on this week.

Eva Candia

Eva: The freshmen look good and are eager to learn. They will fit in very well with the rest of the team. The returning players came back in great shape and passed fitness testing without trouble. Because of that and the lack of long-term injuries, we can now all focus completely on getting our game plan to work. As a captain, how are you going to help the team achieve its goals? Allison: I think my role this year as a captain is obviously extremely different

6

Season Preview

Eva: I hope to use my experience from playing soccer in Sweden, which is a little bit different from here. I am more of a leading by example type but will have to step up and be more vocal on the field. I will help the team by connecting our play on the field from my midfield position. Off the field, we will have to keep focus throughout the whole season.

top, we are going to have to work hard for 90 minutes. In the past, we have lost games due to lapses in defense or judgment. When we play simple, we can play with any team in this league, and most importantly, beat any team in this league. I think that is what we have to do to win, and I think we have a team committed to doing that. Eva: We have had the talent for a few years, now we need commitment and hard work.

than last. I want to try and maintain a leadership role both on and off the field. I think an important part of the job that Eva and I have is to keep the team focused on working hard and to keep the unnecessary things out.

With three new assistant coaches on staff this year, what have they brought to the team so far? Allison: It’s been great having three new coaches. We are lucky enough to have three coaches who greatly appreciate the game and what we do as studentathletes. Having three coaches also means having the opportunity for more interaction in small games and one-onone work. Bringing a new perspective to the game and to how we work as a team is something that is extremely important and valuable. It’s important that we take a look at all areas of our game and by having Gary, Nate, and Steve we are able to do that.

Eva: Even if we have only been training a short time so far, I think they have already shown that they are very committed to the team and they have high expectations for us. Since they all have different experiences from soccer, we will benefit from having coaches that can help us with every part of the game. Finally, what’s it going to take to get Miami back on top of the MAC? Allison: In order for us to get back to the
