Puer Nobis –

arr. Lani Smith

Confession and Forgiveness P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the Lord of Israel who comes to set us free, the mighty Savior who comes to show mercy, the Dawn from on high who guides us into peace. C: Amen.

P: Let us come before God in confession with the assurance of God’s mercy and grace. (silence for reflection)

P: To you O God, C: We lift up our souls. You know us through and through; we confess our sins to you. Remember not our sins; remember us with your steadfast love. Show us your ways; teach us your paths; and lead us in justice and truth, for the sake of your goodness in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

P: Sisters and brothers, come with joy and draw water from the well of salvation. Remember the gift of baptism: your sin is washed away in the name of +Jesus; you belong to Christ; you are forgiven and anointed to serve. Stand up and raise your heads! The reign of God is near. C: Amen

P: For those waiting for answered prayer: C: Grant your steadfast patience.

P: For those waiting in the face of uncertainty: C: Grant unshakable confidence in your sovereign provision.

P: For those waiting for justice and mercy to reign: C: Grant a glimpse of your glory in our wounded world.

P: For all of us waiting for God’s kingdom to come: C: Grant that we might have the peace of Christ as we wait, the love of Christ as we act, and the grace of Christ as we speak.

Prayer of the Day L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

L: Let us pray… Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son. By his coming nurture growth as people of repentance and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (please be seated)

THE WORD First Reading Isaiah 11:1-10 1A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; 4but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the 3

wicked. 5Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. 6The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. 7The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. 9They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.10On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia! Lord and Savior

L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 3rd Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel Matthew 3:1-12 1In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." 3This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'"4Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a 4

leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, 6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.7But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.11I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." L: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Community Time-During this time we would like to welcome and introduce guests at SLC.

The Meal Communion Distribution-All Baptized Christians are welcome to join with us in this meal where we believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present and received under the form of bread and wine. At SLC, we commune by “Intinction.” As you are ushered forward, please kneel at the altar rails, extend your hand to receive the bread (or ask for a gluten free wafer), and then dip it either into the wine or grape juice. White grape juice is available as a substitute and is offered in the second chalice. You are also invited to remain at the altar rail for a brief time of prayer and meditation if you wish, but do not wait for a group blessing. Adults who do not receive the supper or children who have not received First Communion instruction are encouraged to come forward for a blessing.

The Offering (please sign and pass along the registration pad, returning it to the person who signed it first)
