[1] Miserere, K. 85 1. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. (Mozart) 2. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. (Plainchant) 3. Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea, et a peccato meo munda me. 4. Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego cognosco, et peccatum meum contra me est semper. 5. 6. Ecce enim in iniquitatibus conceptus sum, et in peccatis concepit me mater mea. 7. 8. Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor; lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. 9. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam, et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. 10. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis, et omnes iniquitates meas dele. 11. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus, et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. 12. Ne projicias me a facie tua, et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. 13. Redde me laetitiam salutaris tui, et spiritu principali confirma me. 14. 19. Benigne fac, Domine, in bona voluntate tua Sion, ut aedificentur muri Jerusalem. 20. Tunc acceptabis sacrificium justitiae, oblationes, et holocausta; tunc imponent super altare tuum vitulos.

1. Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness. (Mozart) 2. According to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences. (Plainchant) 3. Wash me throughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin. 4. For I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me. 5. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged. 6. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness and in sin hath my mother conceived me. 7. But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. 8. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 9. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 10. Turn thy face from my sins and put out all my misdeeds. 11. Make me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 12. Cast me not away from thy presence and take not thy holy Spirit from me. . 13. O give me the comfort of thy help again, and stablish me with thy free spirit. 14. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 15. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health, and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness. 16. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall show thy praise. 17. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee, but thou delightest not in burnt offerings. 18. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise. 19. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion; build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 20. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt offerings and oblations; then shall they offer young bullocks upoin thine altar.

Requiem, K.626 [2] I. Introitus (Chorus & Soprano Solo) Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem; Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord: and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn, O God, becomes you in Sion, and a vow shall be paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer: to you all flesh shall come. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

III. Sequentia [3] 1. Dies irae (Chorus)

1. Day of wrath

Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sybilla.

Day of wrath, that dreadful day, the world will melt in ashes, as David and the Sibyl foretold.

Quantus tremor est futurus, quando judex est venturus cuncta stricte discussurus.

What trembling there will be, when the judge shall come, dealing strictly with everything.

[4] 2. Tuba mirum (Soloists) Mozart and Süssmayr

2. The trumpet

Tuba mirum spargens sonum, per sepulchra regionum, coget omnes ante thronum.

The trumpet scattering wonderful sound through earth’s sepulchres shall bring all before the throne.

Death shall stand stupefied and nature, when the creature shall rise to answer to the one that judges.

Liber scriptus proferetur, in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.

The written book shall be brought forward in which everything is contained by which the world shall be judged.

Judex ergo cum sedebit, quidquid latet apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.

So the judge whall sit, whatever is hidden shall be seen: nothing shall remain unavenged.

What am I, a wretch, to say? Whom seek to intercede, when the just man is barely safe?

[5] 3. Rex tremendae (Chorus) Mozart and Süssmayr

3. King of fearful majesty

Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salva me, fons pietatis.

King of fearful majesty, who grants salvation to those to be saved, save me, fount of mercy.

[6] 4. Recordare (Soloists) Mozart and Süssmayr

4. Remember, merciful Jesus

Recordare Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae; ne me perdas illa die.

Remember, merciful Jesus, that I am the reason for your life: do not destroy me on that day.

Quaerens me sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non sit cassus.

Seeking me, you lived in weariness, suffered the cross and redeemed me: let such labour not be in vain.

Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis, ante diem rationis.

O just judge of vengeance, grant me remission before the day of reckoning.

Ingemisco tanquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce, Deus.

I groan as an offender: my face blushes with guilt: spare the suppliant, O God.

You who absolved Mary and heard the thief, you gave hope too to me.

My prayers are unworthy, but you, in goodness, act kindly, so that I do not burn in eternal fire.

Among the sheep grant me a place and separate me from the goats, putting me on your right hand.

[7] 5. Confutatis (Chorus) Mozart and Süssmayr

5. Let the cursed ones be confounded

Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictis.

Let the cursed ones be confounded, committed to harsh flames: summon me among the blessed.

Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis gere curam mei finis.

I beg you, suppliant, bowing down, my contrite heart like ashes, care for me at my ending.

[8] 6. Lacrimosa (Chorus) Mozart and Süssmayr

6. Tearful, that day

Lacrimosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus.

Tearful, that day on which shall rise from the ashes guilty man, to be judged.

Huic ergo parce Deus, pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem! Amen!

Therefore, O God, spare this man. O merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen.

Lord, Jesus Christ, King of glory, free the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and the deep lake: free them from the mouth of the lion, lest Tartarus take them, lest they fall into darkness: but the standard-bearer St Michael
