USP 797 Standards
What is USP 797?
United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapter 797 is a set of guidelines prepared to aid in the process of sterile compounding. This chapter provides procedural guidance for sterile training, quality checks, microbial testing, environmental design and environmental testing. Taking the time to review and implement USP Chapter 797 recommendations will reduce the overall risk of contamination and error.
Who must be USP Chapter 797 compliant?
Any pharmacy that compounds sterile preparations should use USP Chapter 797 as a guide for their policies and procedures. Concepts found in this chapter are being adopted by many state boards of pharmacy however, not all states require or enforce 797 compliance.
What are the guidelines for compliancy?
These are just some of the measures that Roadrunner Pharmacy has taken to comply with 797 guidelines:
• Facility Design - thousands of hours and millions of dollars invested in our state-of-the-art sterile facility • Environmental and Engineering Controls - ISO certified clean rooms with HEPA filtration • Environmental Testing - performed on a regular basis for microbes • Personnel Training and Competency Testing - technicians are rigorously trained and tested bi-annually • Standard Operating Procedures and Documentation - reviewed and updated continuously • Quality Assurance - minimum 14 day quarantine for all sterile medications while testing is performed • Storage and Dating - independent laboratories perform serial testing to validate beyond-use dates
