5: Nuestro Sistema de Alimentos

5: Our Food System Individual choices about eating and physical activity are critical to obesity prevention. However, individual choices are made within a system that influences what is available. The U.S. food system influences what foods are in the marketplace, which are most affordable, and what types of venues are accessible for people to purchase food. The good news is that the U.S. food industry produces enough food to supply each American with approximately 3,900 calories per person per day.

What we need to be aware of is that foods that are high in fat and sugar are often perceived to taste great.

In today’s world, sugar and fat-rich processed foods are readily available, convenient, inexpensive, and good-tasting, and yes, probably the reason why people buy them and eat them more.

What else should we be aware of? ·

Portion sizes of most foods have increased over the past several decades.

·

Larger portions lead to more calories.

·

Americans are cooking less often and eating out more often than they once did.

ADVOCATES FOR A LIFESTYLE OF EXERCISE AND NUTRITION IN VENTURA COUNTY (A LEAN VC) “This coalition had its beginnings in 2002 as the Chronic Disease Prevention Partnership sponsored by Ventura County Public Health. In 2003, Ventura County Public Health and several agencies .. formed the Ventura County Obesity Prevention Task Force (OPTF) in response to the national, state and local public health crisis of obesity. In April 2008, the task force name was changed to A LEAN VC (Advocates for a Lifestyle of Exercise and Nutrition in Ventura County) to reflect a broader vision to include health and wellness throughout the life span. Partner organizations of A LEAN VC include the Community Commission for Ventura County (CCVC), Ventura County Public Health, the Gold Coast Collaborative for Nutrition and Fitness and others representing schools, workplaces, health, and social service providers.” For more about A LEAN VC visit: www.healthyventuracounty.org
