Have you ever been uncomfortable on a Motorcycle? A few weeks ago I rented a stock Road King in Miami for a ride to Key West. I own a Road King I thought no problem, should be just like mine. I forgot just how uncomfortable a stock bike can be if you don’t fit it right. Now I remember why I changed the handle bars and seat on mine, for comfort! Any way the ride was great other than the kink in my neck that just wouldn’t go away. What an excellent turnout for our chili night theme at January’s general meeting. Thank you to everyone that attended and those who brought Chili. And a special thanks to Charlie Holbrook for the excellent video that he produced from our

Yellowstone trip this past summer. If you went to Yellowstone and weren’t at the meeting you missed something special, great memories! On that same note we invited Dave Jarvis operator of Great Eastern Motorcycle Tours to our February meeting. He will be presenting information on his Canyonlands Tour. This is a ten day tour through Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Can’t wait to hear all about it, if it is anything close to Yellowstone, it should be a great tour. If there is enough interest we hope to schedule in 2013. February 2, will be our first ride leader meeting of the year; the purpose is to discuss ride destinations and start scheduling rides before riding season. We hope to repeat some of the more enjoyable rides and also add new ones. We had an excellent response to the ride survey and will consider those suggestions for future rides. If anyone has an idea there is still time to fill out the survey, or join us at the meeting. If the winter continues to be mild, who knows we just might start early this year. With any luck we will have rain free weekends and all rides will go off as planned. Well I guess that is wishful thinking, but you never know, sometimes you might just get what you wish for.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER CONT’D. I want to mention some important club Fund Raisers that Carole Kovacs is scheduling with a few local restaurants. The first one is on February 12 at Friday’s on Route 130. They will return to the club 20% of all menu items purchased by club members and guests. Full details are on our club calendar. What an excellent way to raise money for the club and have a meal with good friends too. Finally, I want to congratulate Cheryl, Dawn and Mary for all they accomplished on their Care Package Club Fund Raiser for our Marines serving in Afghanistan. I remember when they first came up with the idea and how skeptical I was that it would take off and thought that they would be left holding all the care packages. Well they proved me wrong, it was actually a sell out! Ladies, my hat’s off to you, what a special surprise you brought to those Marines and our club.

Cheryl DiLeo What a great way to kick off New Year’s Day, the weather was exceptionally warm and the turn out by so many WCR members coming out on their bikes (about 20 bikes) for the traditional New Year’s Day breakfast was awesome. If only we can have many more New Years’s Day like that!! A couple of weeks ago, I flew to Miami for a long weekend with Mike to celebrate my birthday in January, that night we went out for Cuban food in Little Havana…. bring on the Mojitos!! The next morning we traveled via a taxi to Peterson’s Harley where Mike rented a Road King (I missed riding my own bike, but there wasn’t a small enough bike for me)!! After a long while of filling out rental agreements and going over the bike we were on the road. Our first destination was Key Largo via traveling north, first up Alligator Alley for an airboat ride through the everglades. An experience I am surely to remember and something I can now cross off of my bucket list!! It was a little peculiar that night at our hotel in Key Largo when we observed several people running with light beaming from their hats!! WOW, I thought people are really into running at night around here! Waking up the next morning I realized how much fun I was already having. The thought of a long weekend and being on the bike made me realize I wanted to do this more often. The sun was shining the morning we left Key Largo, this was going to be a very

enjoyable ride to Key West. We were riding along when all of a sudden traffic became very slow, maybe it was an accident just ahead. It became very apparent when I observed several runners off to the side of Highway 1 that this was a marathon. We later found out it was a relay marathon from Miami to Key West!! Now it made sense why the night before I saw runners with headlights on their hats. Arrived in Key West later that afternoon, sat at the tiki bar a while then ventured out into the heart of Key West, watching the street vendors performing their acts as the sun was settling over the ocean made for a very serene evening. We walked around Duvall Street checking out all of the eateries and boutiques. The surrounding area is a great place for people watching. It was sad that in the morning we would be heading back to Miami for a flight home. I am looking forward to the 2012 calendar being filled up with ride destinations from all of the wonderful ideas that you, the WCR members put together!!! See you on the roads soon!!

Ladies of our group – read up – the answers to dealing with HEMLET HAIR are here! Thanks to a great little website (http://www.hermotorcycle.com/index.html), the question of how to deal with “...."hair that lies flat to the skull at all points where said skull comes into contact with protective helmet” is addressed. As a fellow female rider, and always interested in the viewpoints of other women riders, I found this particular site to be very helpful in providing potential solutions to always having your locks good, no matter how long and fast you have been riding! No longer should you feel that the only approach is “I will never remove the helmet”. A few creative suggestions provided by numerous female riders include: • • • • •

THANKS COOKIE

'Twas the month, or two after Christmas...

Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house, Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the chocolate I'd taste At the holiday parties had gone to my waist. When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber),

A token of appreciation was presented to Cookie at last month’s meeting in recognition of her hard work and dedication over the past five years as our Newsletter Editor. Cookie kept us up to date with events and well informed of topics of interest, locally and in the club. Thanks so much Cookie and good luck as our new Membership Officer.

This one is for Norman… The man that invented the waffle iron, didn’t even like waffles. Imagine that…

I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared, The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese and the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please." As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt and prepared once again to do battle with dirt... I said to myself, as I only can, "You can't spend a Summer, disguised as a man!"

So, away with the last of the sour cream dip. Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip. Every last bit of food that I like must be banished Till all the additional ounces have vanished. I won't have a cookie, not even a lick. I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick. I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie. I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore... But isn't that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all, and to all a good diet.

BREAKING BAD HABITS Why It’s So Hard to Change

NIH  News  in  Health  January  2012     If you know something’s bad for you, why can’t you just stop? About 70% of smokers say they would like to quit. Drug and alcohol abusers struggle to give up addictions that hurt their ! bodies and tear apart families and friendships.     And many of us have unhealthy excess weight that we could lose if only we would eat right and exercise more. So why don’t we do it? NIH-funded scientists have been searching for answers. They’ve studied what happens in our brains as habits form. They’ve found clues to why bad habits, once established, are so difficult to kick. And they’re developing strategies to help us make the changes we’d like to make. “Habits play an important role in our health,” says Dr. Nora Volkow, director of NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse. “Understanding the biology of how we develop routines that may be harmful to us, and how to break those routines and embrace new ones, could help us change our lifestyles and adopt healthier behaviors.” Habits can arise through repetition. They are a normal part of life, and are often helpful. “We wake up every morning, shower, comb our hair or brush our teeth without being aware of it,” Volkow says. We can drive along familiar routes on mental auto-pilot without really thinking about the directions. “When behaviors become automatic, it gives us an advantage, because the brain does not have to use conscious thought to perform the activity,” Volkow says. This frees up our brains to focus on different things.

Habits can also develop when good or enjoyable events trigger the brain’s “reward” centers. This can set up potentially harmful routines, such as overeating, smoking, drug or alcohol abuse, gambling and even compulsive use of computers and social media. “The general machinery by which we build both kinds of habits are the same, whether it’s a habit for overeating or a habit for getting to work without really thinking about the details,” says Dr. Russell Poldrack, a neurobiologist at the University of Texas at Austin. Both types of habits are based on the same types of brain mechanisms. “But there’s one important difference,” Poldrack says. And this difference makes the pleasure-based habits so much harder to break. Enjoyable behaviors can prompt your brain to release a chemical called dopamine. “If you do something over and over, and dopamine is there when you’re doing it, that strengthens the habit even more. When you’re not doing those things, dopamine creates the craving to do it again,” Poldrack says. “This explains why some people crave drugs, even if the drug no longer makes them feel particularly good once they take it.” In a sense, then, parts of our brains are working against us when we try to overcome bad habits. “These routines can become hardwired in our brains,” Volkow says. And the brain’s reward centers keep us craving the things we’re trying so hard to resist. The good news is, humans are not simply creatures of habit. We have many more brain regions to help us do what’s best for our health. “Humans are much better than any other animal at changing and orienting our behavior toward long-term goals, or long-term benefits,” says Dr. Roy Baumeister, a psychologist at Florida State University. His studies on decision-making and willpower have led him to conclude that “self-control is like a muscle. Once you’ve exerted some selfcontrol, like a muscle it gets tired.” Read more: http://newsinhealth.nih.gov/issue/Jan2012/Feature
